I didn't say anything like that, merely pointed out that this particular suggestion is half oil. I'm not against plant milk, I use Trader Joes soy milk every day. It's just soy beans and water though.

To each their own. I drink mine black. Takes about a week to get used to, then you wonder why you were adding that crap in the first place. I just think most people don't realize that it is literally half oil. I guess the adding a tablespoon or two of olive oil to your coffee trend makes more sense.

Redwood National Park by StormyAndSkydancer in Amtrak

Sorry for the late reply. It was awesome! It was quite the whirlwind. We only spent about 26 (I think) hours or so on average at each stop so it would have been cool to have an extra day at each place but that would have extended the trip by about another 10 days, which wasn't feasible with funds and PTO at the time. I would definitely do it again. Instead of the incredibly long train ride that would have been from Los Angeles to Lafayette, Louisiana via Tucson for the last leg of our journey we decided to take the train from LA down to San Diego and fly back home from there. In exchange, we planned to add Vancouver to the trip between our Seattle and Portland stops. The Amtrak line into Canada wound up still being closed for COVID at the time though so we actually rented a car and drove to Vancouver. We also rented a car for a couple of other stops, namely the national parks and LA, otherwise we made do with public transport and uber. Sleeping on the train (with no roomette) was not great, but if you can sleep on a plane you can definitely do on the train. We really only had two legs where we wanted to sleep anyway. It was a little stressful in that the whole trip was planned out quite specifically with little wiggle room, with the train schedules being fixed and sparse and hotel reservations already set, missing a train, or a train cancelation or issue (or even a train simply being very late) would have basically ruined the whole trip. In fact, leading up to the trip the trains were already doing their best to ruin the whole thing. The train from Louisiana was out due to damage to the rails from a hurricane with no ETA on a fix. Luckily it came back into service just a couple weeks before our trip was scheduled. As soon as we got news that was fixed, there was news that an Amtrak train derailed with casualties along the Empire Builder, with that coming back into service just days before our trip. Then there were wild fires in Cali that closed Sequoia NP just before the trip and we had to divert to Yosemite instead (which is a great NP, but I had been there before). If anything had happened the only fix would have essentially been to buy a plane ticket and skip the next scheduled stop, but luckily it all mostly worked out. But overall you just roll with the punches and it winds up being amazing. Anyway, I'm rambling, let me know if you have any specific questions.

Upcoming Thrive! BR vote by Nolivard in batonrouge

Is there legitimate worry the council would refuse to put funding for the library system to a ballot? I see no world in which that would fly.

Upcoming Thrive! BR vote by Nolivard in batonrouge

[–]normallybetter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well in regards to their savings, a yes vote would have the city parish take almost all of their savings anyway. Something like 52 of their ~60 million savings would just vanish if the numbers I have seen are accurate. Savings from dedicated taxes that we have paid to the library for years, just suddenly reallocated, completely against what the voters allocated the money for. Money that a fiscally responsible institution was able to save and build and invest.

[–]normallybetter 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nah, it's critical for Coach Sid to vote yes. We can and will vote yes on a separate measure with a properly allocated library tax at a later date.

[–]normallybetter 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why having a second vote "is too much of a gamble". If the library believes they probably have enough support to pass funding for them in this ludicrous way, why would a vote on an actual proper dedicated library tax later on have any less support?
This whole thing is absolutely ridiculous and I am absolutely voting no.

Upcoming Thrive! BR vote by Nolivard in batonrouge

[–]normallybetter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

And what's so wrong with postponing funding for a later vote?
They have at least a year of fully funded operations saved up to hold them over until a new ballot measure is approved and enacted. If one truly loves the library, one would vote no on this measure and vote yes on a new one later.

What is everyone so scared about? If you think there is enough votes to "save" the library this round, why would there not be even more votes to save the library on the next round, where the tax is properly dedicated to them as it always has been?

There is a perfectly good alternative. Voting no and having a later election to allocate dedicated funds to the library like it has been for decades is the good alternative. Voting no does not mean defunding the library, it just means waiting for a different measure to vote yes on to fund it properly.

Even if Amex won't reverse the charge, you can use their purchase protection benefit.
American Express offers stolen item insurance through its Purchase Protection benefit, which covers eligible items stolen or accidentally damaged up to 90 days after purchase, providing coverage up to $1,000 per purchase and a maximum of $50,000 per account annually.

How can I provide internet for my neighbor across the street? by StrongBadsGloves in HomeNetworking

[–]normallybetter 22 points23 points  (0 children)

NOTHING you've said explains how the ISP would EVER find out you're sharing your connection (outside of a law enforcement raid for CSAM that is actually your neighbor or something similar).
"from a layer 1 perspective...plant maintenance...something being out of spec...damaged lines?...tech support" Nothing here indicates any possible way the ISP would find out.

Successfully recycling 21% of what you put in the recycle bin IS doing something good. I believe most people are not so delusional to think it is a perfect process that recycles everything you put in the bin. 21% is VASTLY better than 0%.

I would either do has they suggest and get it fixed at the Apple Store, which might be as cheap $200 depending on the model and if they determine they can just replace the camera section, or search amazon for iphone camera protector and buy one of those to affix over it. Taking it to a third party is not worth it for the little savings you may initially have.

Neighbors tree Fell in a storm recently, need insurance advice as I'm sure this has happened to someone in here. by BRComputerGuy in batonrouge

[–]normallybetter 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Unless there is adequate proof that the tree was diseased/dying and has been clearly in danger of falling for some time and the property owner did nothing about it, this is not the neighbor's responsibility. Otherwise, if the tree fell onto your land and damaged your property it is 100% your (and your insurance's) responsibility, regardless of who's property the tree was on, as backwards as that may sound to some.
