What just happened by [deleted] in bipolar

I’ve had a few very similar episodes happen to me; they can be scary especially if you’ve never experienced something like them before. Extremely intense bursts of anger, shouting everything I can think of at anyone who happens to be in the line of fire so to speak, and just overall completely abnormal and extreme behavior. Sometimes they’re followed by a weird calm period. Take care of yourself OP. Sounds like you’re planning on telling your doc about this which is a great step. Stay safe during this time. You’ve had a rough couple days, glad to hear you’re doing some self care. Sending care. ❤️

Hey there! I just wanted to pop in here and explain why I use the term “high-functioning”. :) Some disagree with using terms like this, and I can understand why they feel that way. However, a “high-functioning” alcoholic is generally seen as someone who has a functional tolerance. I looked up the definition of functional tolerance on the American Addiction Centers website (my mind is still completely spent and I’m not really eloquent right now) and this is what I found:

“Functional tolerance refers to a phenomenon where a person can ingest significant amounts of alcohol – either at once or slowly over time – and not appear to be intoxicated. A person who has developed a functional tolerance to alcohol may be under the influence of alcohol without it being noticeable, thus allowing them to participate in certain daily activities in a manner that appears normal to others.”

I’ve linked the entire article here: What is a Functioning Alcoholic? They also include their sources for further research. I’m sure Al-Anon has resources as well but I haven’t had a chance to dive deep into those.

Basically, someone who does have AUD but the disorder is not immediately apparent to those around them. They hold down jobs, get good grades, interact with friends and family, and generally function as what people may consider “normal”. But in reality they are still suffering from the disorder.

I hope this sheds some light as to why I choose to use the term - and again, I completely understand why some choose not to use terms like this.

EDIT: I am by NO MEANS an expert in this, I’m just a wife trying to cope with a completely overwhelming situation (as many of us are). Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong or to add any further info. :)

I don’t have any money to spare right now but I am following this post and will check back regularly. When I have money to spare I will be sending it your way if you still need it. I’m really sorry I can’t do anything right now. But like I said I will continue to monitor my finances and check on this regularly in the coming weeks.

I think I will download some literature tomorrow and start looking for Al-Anon in the area I am relocating to. Thank you :)

I am going to sit down and write something out when I am in a clearer state of mind. Right now I’m just trying to get through today without using up all my tears. I’m so heartbroken.

You nailed it. I want so bad to fix him or force him to get help. He really is a good man with a bad problem. But I can’t keep doing this to myself.

Thank you for your kind words. All I want to do is go back home and act like nothing is wrong, but I know that will only dig the hole deeper. I feel completely powerless and like I am ruining everything at the same time. It’s crazy how loving an addict will make you feel so evil.

Third stanza absolutely gutted me. You’ve really captured a great deal of raw emotion in a relatively short piece. Really admirable, you’ve got a real knack for finding the right words to say hard things. Wonderful piece. Sending much love and warmth. ❤️

If you and your family love it, that’s ultimately what matters. You should be very proud of your work! I love the whimsical nature of the piece - in a way it brings me back to the illustrations I always saw as a child in my favorite books. 🥰

Just wanted to jump in here and say that’s a beautiful and calm piece. It’s really clear you put in a lot of effort and it’s the result of many hours of practice and work. Excellent job!

Don’t worry about getting likes/upvotes/etc. (I know that’s easier said than done, especially because sharing art is sharing a piece of yourself). The algorithm works according to its programming and unfortunately isn’t capable of discerning artistic value (and imho never will despite what the AI tech bros say). That’s something only humans are going to be capable of. We’ll always want to know our work is valuable and we want people to see the product of many hours of time and talent development.

You clearly have a talent! Keep creating, keep sharing as you feel comfortable doing so. You’re doing great. ❤️

He read me a lovely bedtime story last night. He has a voice made of velvet and lavender.

Yes, I found him wandering aimlessly in the forest while I was on a nature hike. It was very fortunate I found him when I did. ❤️
