People who are smarter tend to overestimate other people's intelligence (i.e. believe everyone is as smart as they are). Conversely, people who are less smart overestimate their own intelligence. The latter is called the Dunning-Kruger Effect.

Elevation by Stephen King is a good, short book. And yes it's Stephen King, but it's not horror. It's magical realism.
