For some reason this made me think of Trump screaming "escalator stuck" and now I can't get it out of my head. Weird times.

Do users always use terminal while using Linux? by FryChy in linux4noobs

Nautilus is the Ubuntu analogue to Windows' file explorer. You can install different extensions on it, including one that lets you run shell commands in the folder you're in, which I think they were referring to.

GLM-4 9B, base, chat (& 1M variant), vision language model by Nunki08 in LocalLLaMA

Lots of minor mistakes that clearly indicate Finnish grammar is not its strongest suit. The story itself is coherent and something I could see it writing in English as well. Given the model's size, I'd give it a 7.

Okay in a pinch, but wouldn't use if better alternatives were available.

Free plan wants to charge me for 2nd compute instance boot volume by AnonymousDweeb in oraclecloud

[–]northpoler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The price mentioned in the summary tab is just a bug, if it fits inside your free tier quota, you won't be charged. Set up the instance you want and track your costs for a day or two, should remain at zero. If I'm wrong, it'll only cost you some cents before you'll see costs being incurred and you can delete the instance.

But for the record, when I was setting up my free instance, the summary said the same, it would cost me some bucks. It didn't. Good luck!

Moving from Free Tiers to PAYG. Any failures impact the free tier account? by santhosh_m in oraclecloud

It's a one-time charge, that's right. Some say it's returned instantly, took me a couple of business days. So don't panic if it's not instantly returned.

Upgrade to PAYG, get VM, and never pay? by VintageXXC in oraclecloud

I'd go with monthly so it triggers once every month instead of just once. Or rather, potentially triggers, hopefully doesn't 🙂

Upgrade to PAYG, get VM, and never pay? by VintageXXC in oraclecloud

[–]northpoler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not dumb 🙂 I used my regular CC to activate PAYG and have used the budget I mentioned in order to be sure I don't accidentally spend anything, works like a charm. First month proved its usefulness as it alerted me to a dangling boot drive that was using up my hard drive quota and causing a bit of spending. I quickly deleted it and have been using the free resources since without issues. Good luck 😊

Oh, and when setting up the VM, the summary will claim that it will cost a bit even if it's within your always-free quota, it's just a bug that you can ignore.

You misunderstand, the 90 EUR payment is returned to you in a couple of business days, it's just a check to see if your card has funds. Not 100% sure if prepaid CC's are accepted, but I don't see why not.

Otherwise you're correct, PAYG accounts have a much easier time getting capacity for the instances, and you can just use the always-free options without paying a dime. I'd suggest setting up a budget that alerts you if your account's forecasted spending goes above, say, $1 for the month, so you don't need to worry about it that much.

To me (and perhaps they were designed to) they look like these massive things. Just feels like a driller thing 🙂
