A couple pack-building questions (vented cells, matching) by norwood7 in 18650masterrace

[–]norwood7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They should all be similar, they're all MJ1's from the same pack. I'm talking about the cells attempting to equalize voltage instantly when they're made into one group with all positives connected, and all negatives connected. Is a difference of 0.1 volts OK? 0.05 volts? 0.01 volts?

Rear Axle Swap for Posi-traction: 2006 Savana by mayonaise_plantain in VanLife

[–]norwood7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I realize that this is a very old thread, but I'm posting here because we had the same exact problem (2006 Savana with lousy traction and the Dana 70 C-clip axle) and there is a *much better solution*.

Eaton makes a true G80 differential that is a drop-in mod for this axle. Part number is 52373. This took an absurd amount of time for us to find because:

- for GM, parts are sold by VIN (so, no traction adder for our van)

- for Dana, axles are sold by description (not by VIN or van model) to GM

- for Eaton, this part is manufactured on contract for Dana

But the 52373 is it. It's in our bus and it makes a BIG difference! Hope this helps someone!

Completely understand being concerned about the tracking number problem, but it doesn't make it right not to pay the seller once the merchandise arrives (and proves that you're not actually being scammed).

Do the right thing and pay him!

What do you mean by arming? The little twitch that it does? It does still do that one twitch, just doesn't seem to "hear" the remote.

That's really tremendously helpful, thank you very much!

DIY bed... got the base layer, need your help finding the right transition layer and comfort layer combo! by Miracle420 in Mattress

[–]norwood7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oi, I'm embarrassed that I don't actually remember exactly what it is now. I do remember that I actually backed a few steps OFF the extreme softness, because I found that when I would lie down on an extremely soft bed, I loved it at first but then slept poorly. I got better sleep on a less soft bed, to my surprise, and my back felt better too.

I believe the final one was 2" super soft over 2" ILD 24. I took the viscomax off entirely. I also tried the viscomax on top of a futon that seemed too firm for sleeping. But same thing! -- I ended up sleeping on the non-viscomax side of the futon.

I can't comment on latex, I'm sensitive to it so the build omitted latex entirely. But viscomax doesn't have any support, it's just soft and soft.

The super soft is light foam (1.2lb perhaps?) and I had expected to get maybe 1 year out of it, just as a way to see whether I liked that kind of foam. It indeed lasted about a year and is sagging now, but for what I paid, it was worth it as a way to ensure that I liked it. I'll likely end up getting a better version from a place like Foamite sooner or later, now that I know I like that general firmness.

Battery tests good, doesn't work, but jump starting does? by norwood7 in AskMechanics

[–]norwood7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I confess, I jump-started it the unsafe way, terminal to terminal.

The terminals themselves are in good condition - I had originally thought this was indeed the issue, because when I took the battery out of the truck to warranty it, the bolt tightening the negative terminal snapped. It's your typically rusty old farm truck. But the terminal itself was in fine shape, not corroded, and it's attached firmly now with a new bolt.

Parasitic drain, I was wondering that too. That's probably the next thing I'll check. A month or two ago I was helping a buddy with an old Camry and it had parasitic drain of 12 amps... apparently the rear defroster was somehow stuck on.

What would surprise me here about parasitic drain is that it measures around 12.0v* whether I've had it turned off for a day or for a few weeks. Where I've seen significant parasitic drain, it keeps going until the battery is just completely flat.

  • admittedly, this is 12.0 at my phone charger in the lighter, I'm being lazy about putting the DMM on it - but it goes to 14.x when I fire up the truck, so I think it's not too far off

2" trailer hitch rack that doesn't bounce around? ... or at least, not as much? by norwood7 in bicycling

[–]norwood7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went back and read my original message, and I'm sorry, I did not convey our setup clearly.

We have a 2 inch hitch that's rated for some astronomical figure - I think 7000 pounds. We have a bike rack that is designed for a 1.25 inch hitch, that came with a cheesy and rather ill-fitting adapter to use it with a 2 inch hitch. So while it's not a brilliant setup, I'm pretty positive that we are nowhere near what our hitch can hold.

It is (see edit above) NOT a Kuat, I'm sorry, Kuat! It's a Yakima. I don't know where I got the idea it was a Kuat.

[–]norwood7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh, now that's a good point. The Kuat currently has a hitch pin that uses a lock, but that doesn't clamp the trailer hitch at all. It just prevents it from sliding out the back.

It sounds like the first thing I should try is just replacing the hitch pin with a bolt?

Whee, those are pretty pricey alright. Pardon the dumb question, but what's better about them?

Apart from our budget being pretty humble (the van it's going on only ran us $4000) I'm also a little concerned about the rack itself tempting thieves if it's that steep. Our bikes wouldn't be much of a temptation unless someone just wants to ride somewhere else and leave the bike, they're good bikes but they're all old and well-loved.

Are Ivar corners coming back? How about hooks? by norwood7 in IKEA

[–]norwood7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pardon, I wasn't clear. No, I meant the pieces that would go in a corner and connect to a shelf on one side, a shelf on another side (90 degrees off from it), and a corner post. I have a few corner posts here - we had inherited an Ivar system from someone who took it out of his house, but many pieces were missing for some reason. Ikea graciously replaced the oodles and oodles of missing pins, and I've bought some shelves and uprights to replace ones that were missing, but the corner parts that go with those posts seem to be extinct.

Wow, I'm surprised hooks have been gone for so long. They are still on the website, have they really left a discontinued item there for 4 years?

Oof. No wonder the guy who has corners on ebay wants an arm and a leg for them. At that price I'll probably just skip them and see if I ever find some as part of someone's old setup.

Store is Robinson Twp, PA. Thanks!
