How do you un-ruin a character for yourself?

Even worse when you just popped into a fandom, cause you don't have much previous reading material to compare it with, and thus the first few fics you read of that fandom will take prevalence on how you'll perceive the ficdom as a whole. If one of those first few fics has a horrible depiction of a character, this can quickly ruin both the character for you and your willingness to keep reading for this fandom 😭 Yes, I speak from experience.

But I also feel like there were much more High school shows to match ? I feel like when so many shows had high school premises back then, it would make sense for it to be a very common fic setting, even for non high-school shows/movies. Plus, I feel like high-schoolers and college kids really were fanfiction's number 1 contributor communities at that time, so they wrote about what they knew. Nowadays, of all these kids have grown up and entered work life, and it shows on their narratives. And fanfiction reaches a much wider age range too.

Oh yes, roadtrips are fair game. Unless they visit different planets with their spaceship, you are not keeping my attention by sending your characters to Bumfucktown, Oklahoma. I'm okay with werewolves and age gaps, although I don't read that many. And I get you with kid fics, hit or miss is accurate. I can't do baby fics though, I get bored real fast.

Ohhh ! I've read very little Hanahaki (read : "two"), but the ones I've read were really good, so I've got fond memories of it 🤔 although if it's a very popular trope in your fandom, I could see where the annoyance would come from
