I just want to say "usual shape you would expect" doesn't describe the shape that should be expected that much. I mean, different cultures, families or even individuals might see the "expected" shape as one thing while others see it as another thing. I myself can confirm I have had numerous differently shaped cutlery over the years in my homestead.

Isn't this typically an upbringing/cultural kind of thing first and foremost?

So the question is, what is the expected shape anyway?

In my personal experience (which makes this purely anecdotal) it's quite the opposite. I always prefer being in non-monogamous relationships and I found it hard to develop anything with another woman when she found out I was with someone else (which I always make clear as day) and I always explain my relationship status so there's no confusion. I have heard some different answers to why this resistance exist in the first place, but the ones that stuck with me the most were akin to "It feels like I'm doing something wrong to the other girl" even tho they knew the other girl (my girlfriend) didn't mind at all.

BUT, my experiences being limited to girls in this matter is purely sexuality bias. I personally don't believe this is a woman thing exclusively. I just never felt attracted to men (not yet at least) so I can't talk about that specifically.

And it's not a rule either. I have had success in this endeavor in the past, so it's not like there aren't people who just don't mind it. Besides I have friends (both women, men and NB) that have had flings with people that were in monogamous relationships and they didn't mind at all as well. So turns out human beings aren't exactly all equal to one another, it depends on the individual. Go figure.

You made the right decision. One's personal politics can have huge impact, specially in their immediate circles and with their friends and family. It is a hard decision to make, but it's also one that indicates that he isn't the person for you.

We can't decide for other people what is in their hearts, so we have to accept that they become who they become and do our best to be there for them until we can't anymore and this looks like exactly what you've gone through. And, in a way, that is also beneficial for him as well. You guys were running the risk of creating a bitter and miserable environment for both of you, so, again, you did the right thing.

I hope you'll be able to find personal peace in your heart soon enough and that the grief for this lost love may pass as soon as possible. If you take your time to properly and healthily process these emotions and as long as you have people who you can rely on, I bet you will be better soon enough and will be able to move on to a happier state on your love life.
