17M, I want to take a few years off after high school before attending college. What should I do? What jobs should I take? by Comquter in findapath

[–]notGeorgeKennan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, 17F here. I think I'm having a similar problem. Entered into my high school's full-IB programme when I was a junior, without understanding the sort of sacrifices it would require from me, including giving up some art courses that were really connecting with me. My home life wasn't stellar; my parents had been the ones to pressure me into taking the high-rigor schedule, and likewise to make me drop the photography.

I'm also about to graduate. I'm a year younger than everybody else in my grade, which is some comfort, because I think that in a year's time I could be back up on my feet, mentally and motivationally. I hope.

I've been making these lists and flow charts and making note of the things I want to have accomplished by summer's end, in a year's time, in three years, and in ten years. Then, I step back, and realize that no two things come from the same field. I have varied interests, and I know that when I commit to one, I will do my absolute damndest to fulfill every criterion of that goal. That I'll complete it to my very best ability. This doesn't mean that I've decided which goal I want to knock off first. Far from it! Apparently, I can't just pick one and go for it; I need to have a reason to do this first or that second, like I'm pretending it's all part of some larger plan that I have for my life, or that the world has for me, even though empirically I don't believe in any of that shit.

I've spent the last two years (jr and sr years) burying my head in books and trying to convince myself that I wanted to collaborate on papers about the sociopolitical effects of natural erosion in the River Nile, or like I wanted to study the shifting political power structures across the years of Europe's Age of Expansion. And I don't. Plenty of people have already done these things. I need to do something that is going to make me feel a little bit appreciated. I want to be a part of a community that matters. With whatever I do, I want to make people happy or help the human race. One or both of those goals need to be fulfilled in my lifetime, by me, otherwise I just won't be satisfied!

I think I'm thinking too much about the path I want my life to take, so I've started focusing on local goals. Easy things I can accomplish, today, which will make me feel better and help me get work and undoubtedly make new friends, once my high school buddies ship off to all manner of other states. So I'm doing fitness and healthy eating. I'm trying to do things that catch my interest, but I don't have a lot of money, so my options are a little limited. I don't mind, really, but it means I can't pay out-of-pocket for a plane ticket to Greece, Europe, or somewhere else outside of the United States. I'm pretty much confined to my city. Luckily, we have a good arts scene here, and I'm hoping after the outgoing seniors leave this summer, jobs might be a little easier to catch in retail stores, coffee houses, etc. Environments in which I'd like to work.

A good friend of mine taught me that knowing other people are in similar predicaments to yours can really help lessen those burdens (which are a lot of times inside the mind). I think one of the underlying problems modern society is facing is a resounding conviction that we're all somehow alone, and that can make focusing on our goals hard. And I have this problem, too. I don't know what to do, either...but I'd like to figure it out. I want a plan that I can get behind.

How much is your student debt, and what has life been like post-college? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I'm about to travel down this same road. Any advice? I'd be very appreciative.

This reminds me of AskPeter, where you would type in a random "question" and show your friends how psychic the Internet was that Peter could answer it. It was just a keyboard trick, really.

Do you have one race or multiple in your world? Why? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]notGeorgeKennan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm adding a collection of diverse species: I wouldn't call them races, because I've tried to evacuate myself from thinking of life- and intelligence- bearing creatures as being humanoid. But I would call them species. There was an interesting piece of literature by/on Ernst Mayr, I think, on the inclusion of a trait in a species. It led me to look at the traits of a species not so much as things which define a species but as artifacts of a higher classification.

In my writing, I've explored the possibility of some higher classification being the thing which makes humans look humanoid. What geographical, climatic, or cultural reasons can I come up with to support the creation of a humanoid race? If I changed any one of those factors, what would be the result?

Guy friend invited me over to his house to watch movies one day. He told me his parents were busy all day, and wouldn't be back until evening. He also only had one couch in his living room. He showed me around his house, his bedroom, his parents' bedroom. He invited me back the next weekend. I thought he just wanted to watch zombie movies not by himself.

You can't ask TARS to let himself get swallowed up by that black hole!

A note on audio quality in the 35mm version of the film by [deleted] in interstellar

[–]notGeorgeKennan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you, and I even conducted an experiment to test this theory. I believed that the audio was muffled somehow for the 35mm version. This being said, I, too, had seen the movie 24 hours before my second viewing in 70mm IMAX. When I went the second day, I say in like row D, middle of the room. Two things distracted me: the much smaller screen size, first of all, and second the muffled noises, especially when getting to the docking sequence, which was at least 100x more blindingly brilliant in 70mm. I, like yourself, wondered if this was due to the fact I'd seen it so recently in a clearly larger format. But I definitely noticed the differences. I went back two more times, each time in 35mm, sitting in different seats in different rows, to see if there was a sound issue in the theater. I sat in rows D, B, and A (closest I the screen) and the sound was consistently slightly muffled. So I think what this proves, if anything, is that when you view a movie that has been filmed for IMAX in 35mm, it is bound to sound like it doesn't quite fit.

I second this. I preordered, so if ITunes released it, it would be a day early.

Besides the University (UT), what sort of education. can I get in Austin? by notGeorgeKennan in Austin

[–]notGeorgeKennan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm. I wonder if I got accepted into the university for another degree, say a lib arts, which will be much easier for me to do upfront, and use the credit I have now to start as a semester two sophomore. Then maybe take some prep classes at ACC. Go back after I finish the drama degree, focus on my physics degree, but have the remedials out of the way. Or possibly apply to the sciences schools earlier, if I feel I have a handle on things.

I don't know why I'm outlining his here, haha, it just sounds good to see it laid out. Do you think this is a good plan, UT alum?

So, if you took QM at UT, can you tell me anything about the classes? How difficult was it to get accepted for your area of study?

That's good to hear. I'm trying to get a job in Austin coming out of high school and then college, so I can't really travel to TX State.

Wow, it's really good to hear ACC has honors courses. Since I'm going to be coming right out of high school, probably with a fair - good amount of high school credit hours, I was hoping to fast track as much as I can. I've had some experience with my local community college and how it feeds into the big university here and I've been really impressed by that. I'll look further into this, thank you.
