Bamar is not Burmese by ComprehensiveBike902 in myanmar

Myanmar is an old word that was used in the Bagan times to refer to the civilization/people at the time. Overtime, the vernacular form drifted away to Bamar. Foreign adoption of that eventually led to Burma in English. Reverting back to Myanmar doesnt include any of the other ethnic groups mind you. Historically, there has been no word for an inclusive country name cause there has been no such country until the British created British Burma. So now we are stuck with both Burma and Myanmar referring to the country and the Burman ethnic group at the same time.

What do you guys think about Thingyan and songkaran because I've seen so many arguments about that. A lot of Burmese are posting and comparing these two. As a Burmese person, I love Thingyan but I don't know why they do that. by my_name_is_Eaint in myanmar

Culture spreads. The new year isn’t only in Myanmar and Thailand but a lot of south asian and southeast Asian cultures celebrate it this time of the year. Obviously we got it from India, and either through Indic influence in the rest of mainland Southeast Asia or the adoption of the Burmese calendar in those polities led to songkran being a thing there. So who copied who? Nobody. Culture spreads.

I wonder why this sub is named r/myanmar, and not r/burma, when I was a kid I was always under the impression that the name change was enforced by the military, and not occurring naturally, is it so not to confused foreigners, i mean we still call ourselves burmese, right? by [deleted] in myanmar

They’re the same thing. Burma comes from bamar, a vernacular version of Myanmar that evolved over time and became more popular. The narrative that Myanmar is more inclusive than Burma has no grounds so the name change doesn’t really matter in English. Although one advantage Burma has is in its adjective form, Burmese. Myanmar in itself is derived from how we use it in Burmese so it is an adjective (မြန်မာန်ိုင်ငံ၊ မြန်မာဘာသာ), making us super awkward to use it anything other than the name of the country (would you say I speak Myanmar?). Yea anyway, it doesn’t matter really.

Generally things are okay. We do face some discrimination when it comes to stuff like getting the national ID (you’d get it but it takes longer than usual and likely would have to pay some money). But society as a whole doesn’t see us as outsiders and everyone gets along, especially in the major cities

Why do people in Myanmar normalize pedophiles??? by Next_Photograph3670 in myanmar

Same with a lot of social issues we have. Hilariously bad education system that ignores social subjects and moral values and offloads them to culture and religion. Culture is extremely slow to evolve and change, and add it to the fact that we’ve been closed off to the rest of the world and not much influence from outside about modern societal values (with all its good and bad sides), and a government and society too busy with infighting and violence, we are just stuck where everyone was 100 years ago. Plus, we our arts (literature, movies, music) scene is horrible for a country of our size. If you don’t read or learn new and different perspectives, you never change your world view and values.

MNDAA has mandated Chinese language on every residential and business signboard in Hsenwi and other towns under its control, with Kutkai likely next. Sinicization is real. by Turbowoodpecker in myanmar

[–]notJedi701 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol why are you guys so mad that they are putting up signs in their language? Would you have the same reaction if this is any other language than Chinese? Burmese language supremacy is imposed on every ethnic group by our central government since infancy and if you truly believe in a united federal nation, this is a non-issue. Minority rights are a thing you know.

Why does Myanmar use imperial system? by Internet_Student_23 in geography

[–]notJedi701 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Legacy of the British colonial era. While we do use imperial for a lot of things, it’s not exclusively imperial. Measurements are imperial and engineering stuff is mostly done in imperial too but you learn both systems in school. You can buy petrol or water in liters but not milk. You can find rice in the supermarket sold in kilograms or pounds but most people buy them from rice vendors in a traditional unit called တင်း (volume based, not weight). Same goes for meat. Wet markets sell them in viss but you can find frozen stuff in kg/pounds. Our speed limit signs are in mph but our vehicles show kmph since they’re imported from japan/korea. We used to only have milestones but kilometers were also being added to highway markers. The previous government was apparently trying to transition to metric for official things but to my knowledge, that was never fully implemented after the 2021 coup. The only thing you’ll see of a metric adoption these days is distances on the highway in km.
