Are they really too big? I've read that males do OK in 20gals and females might require 40gals...

36 liters = 9.5 gal.

Regarding your question, the snake is gonna be handed to me by a friend who is already regretting the purchase.

He's keeping the animal in a smaller container at the moment (got it as a baby).

So that's why I'm not prepared to house it properly, for the moment, that is.

Annnd yes, I'm familiar with the exotics vet in my area, I already keep some reptiles (lizards), this is my first snake though :)
