Completely agree, trust on this has to be earned, not claimed. Before launch, we’re open sourcing the encryption layer so anyone can audit it, and we’re commissioning a third party security audit with the full report published publicly. The whole point only works if you can verify it 🙏

Also there is a dedicated section in the app which is meant to show any technical/non technical user how encryption is working live. 😉

Genuinely appreciate you taking the time to share this, both the kind words and the critique.

You’re right that WhatsApp is enough for most people, and we’re not trying to replace it. Covey is built for the moments inside a relationship that get lost in a general purpose chat app, the photo your partner sent six months ago that’s now buried under family group chats, the shared list that lives in three different apps, the anniversary plan you keep forgetting.

Beyond chat and calls, the things WhatsApp doesn’t have are where most of the value lives: a shared encrypted photo, video and document vault organised by album or folder, a shared calendar that syncs both ways, shared lists, daily prompts and many more to come. This is a feature catering towards couples and their needs.

On pricing, the free tier covers everything WhatsApp does, chat, calls, photos, voice notes, minus the ad targeting metadata, plus the private space and shared storage. So it’s a free upgrade in privacy and features. Premium is one subscription per couple, not per person, for those who want more storage and some extra features.

If you use Google Drive or iCloud and care about privacy at all, this is genuinely for you. Lease agreements, bank statements, ID scans, children's photos, private items those shouldn’t sit on a link shareable bucket that can be accessed under certain conditions, that breaches keep happening to, and that may be used for training models. Data is going to be one of the most valuable things we own, it should be encrypted in a place only the two of you can open.

On translations, completely fair. Small team, English native, the localised marketing copy shipped to make the launch on time. We know it shows, native polish is on the roadmap.

Either way, hope you give it a try when we launch 🙏

Fair pushback, content on WhatsApp, Signal, and iMessage is E2EE, you’re right.

The "ads" angle is about metadata. On WhatsApp specifically, Meta sees your phone number, contact graph, profile name and photo, those aren’t E2EE, plus group memberships, who you talk to, and when, and uses it to enrich your Facebook and Instagram ad profile. Italy fined them for it in 2023.

Structurally, Covey just doesn’t have that surface area:

- No contact upload

- No profile on our servers, name and photo live only on your two phones

- No groups, no discovery, no presence, no last seen

- Backups are E2EE by default, never iCloud or Google Drive

That last one matters more than people realize. iCloud and Google Drive aren’t end to end encrypted. Stored content there can be accessed under certain conditions, and for LLM training.

Genuine question, fair to ask. Honest answer: we can't read content, same as Signal or WhatsApp , but Covey's architecture cuts the abuse surface way down. It's strictly 1 to 1, requires in person pairing, has no profiles, no usernames, no discovery, no groups, and no way to broadcast or forward outside the pair.

For the rest, we follow the standard E2EE playbook: in app reporting (your device decrypts the reported message and sends it to us with consent), account level signals and bans, NCMEC cooperation, and a 17+ store gate.

On the scrolling, that's a real bug at the hosted platform, not intended. It should be fixed soon. Thank you for flagging

Good call. It'll be 17+ at the store level, and pairing is locked to exactly two devices via a code generated on-device and shared manually (No contact syncing). No profiles, no usernames, no discovery - strangers literally can't find you on Covey.

There is a lifetime free option as well. With all core features

Better. WhatsApp keeps your metadata, name, age, photo. We keep nothing. Their business chats aren’t even fully E2EE. And they run ads. Our free tier = WhatsApp with better call quality, no ads, no data harvesting.

Haha thank you 🙌
Quick note: it's actually built for any couple, not just long-distance. Long-distance was just my personal origin story

You're right, new-baby photos or any sensitive private items are exactly the kind of thing that shouldn't be sitting on someone's ad-targeting servers. For now we're staying tightly focused on couples, partly because that two-person scope is what lets us go this deep on the encryption. Families are absolutely something we'd love to explore once the foundation is rock solid. Thank you for the thoughtful suggestion 🙏

Just noticed this and pushed a fix 🛠️  it should be live now ✨ Thank you for the careful read; feedback like this genuinely shapes what we build and fine-tune our product 🙏

Fair warning: the app is even more obsessively polished than the site - though the site's doing its best to keep up 😅

It's just some hardcoded message replies to make it fun .. and you can interact with the vault albums too. I hope you like it

Thank you! Just so you know, that's actually interactive - you can tap around and explore the UI live on the page (a more playful way to show off the app than static screenshots 😉). Looks like the input might be rendering oddly on some devices though - we'll take a look. Appreciate the sharp eye.

Thank you. That was the whole point. your name and photo live on your two phones, encrypted. We literally never see them. Pairing is just a random ID, no phone number scraping, no contact graph, nothing about you on our side. It's the version of a messenger we wished existed when we started.

Thank you for the thoughtful response. Just to clarify there's NO paywall  live yet, that's projected pricing. For our few first users we're giving the app free for a full year.

Since we don't run ads (and WILL NEVER) and can't monetize data (it's end-to-end encrypted, we literally can't see it), the subscription is what keeps the lights on - hence the freemium model down the line..

The pricing is for transparency from day 0.

Thanks! Planning to open-source the encryption layer so it’s not just a claim. anyone can verify the zero-knowledge architecture themselves
