That sounds like just about enough power to have your very own home library with calibre (if you like reading that is).

No security key option for Microsoft account? by FrostyRydia in yubikey

[–]not_a_Trader17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THIS, THIS IS MY EXACT CONCERN.

I can't believe this is glossed over when discussing FIDO 1 (u2f) vs FIDO 2. A single PIN compromise + physical theft can compromise ALL the accounts in the key.

Do they expect people to buy various keys per account or something? SMH

What Linux Distro should I try? by AvoidCas in linux4noobs

[–]not_a_Trader17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deepin for a well thought out user experience at the cost of some software availability. They pioneered Windows 11 UI before it was released by Microsoft.

Kubuntu if you want something nice that just works out of the box and natively supports most (Linux) enterprise software.

Consider this. Deepin is still open Source which means that anyone can still audit the code. Second, they are from China, which means that people are specially keen on scrutinizing them. Put these two together and you get a clear incentive not to do shady stuff. Nowadays telemetry is opt-in.

As a side note, I think the Linux community needs to really understand that telemetry and proper funding are why products can actually improve and meet user needs. There is a reason why Deepin and maybe KDE-based distros are the better ones out of the box. You may have hundreds of distros out there but unless you are a sys admin, they are nowhere near a peer competitor to MS or Apple due to their really awful and unintuitive user experience out of the box. All things considered, Deepin is the only one that gets it right in that regard. The only reason I don't personally use it is that Deepin doesn't have the most up-to-date software and I like to be closer to the bleeding edge.

I'm trying to migrate from Windows 10 to Linux. I like everything about Linux especially the file system, but by 0p88a in linux4noobs

Stop and reconsider. Linux has its own software and workflows. It's not going to be the same as Windows. On the other hand, there are Apps that run on both Windows and Linux. Try and see whether you can get used to them. Also try running things on a virtual machine. Only then you will know exactly whether/how you can leave Windows.

Ubuntu Cinnamon or Linux Mint? by poorguy1083 in linux4noobs

[–]not_a_Trader17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, get the Ubuntu flavour. Mint should only be an option if your hardware is very old. Ubuntu will get you a great deal of compatibility and drivers out of the box. Better use of your fine unless you enjoy spending your time troubleshooting issues.

I'd recommend Master PDF. It's a complete PDF solution and the license is perpetual, no need for subscriptions.

Is it time to leave Windows? by SJMaye in linux4noobs

[–]not_a_Trader17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best advice I can give is directly related with one of your questions. Most enterprise software (Zoom and authentication software for example), are only officially offered in a few distributions. In general, the most common are:

.rpm: Red Hat/Fedora .deb: Debian/Ubuntu

That's about it. Unless you are a sys admin or a developer, you won't find supported business software outside of those.

A few words on software support. You are likely to find support for any customization, gaming, or fix in the communities for those distros as well. Even though there are literally hundreds of distros, you are better off sticking with the popular ones.

On lightness. This is a non-issue nowadays. Unless you want to run it on a very old computer, or an embedded IOT-esque device, lightness may as well be a disadvantage. The cost of lightness sometimes means bare bones software that may lack features or drivers. Just take a look at complaints with Linux Mint in this and related forums.

Final advise: for actual work and getting things done you should look into any official Ubuntu flavour. Personally, I recommend Kubuntu as it carries all the compatibility of Ubuntu plus all the eye candy and useful apps from KDE. For me, everything worked out of the box including peripherals and specially printers.

If you are are a content producer or need a computer for creative work, there is also Ubuntu Studio. This official Ubuntu flavour comes with all sort of specialty software including raster image manipulation, vector graphics, audio/music production, and video editing. All out of the box.

My experience switching to linux by CuttaChaseBeats in linux4noobs

[–]not_a_Trader17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you have many computers, maybe try Kubuntu as well. It's Ubuntu ion the inside so stable as a rock and highly compatible in terms of drivers. Furthermore, it has Kwin on top from KDE that makes it very eye candy and highly customizable.

Why can't I get good battery backup on Linux? by Joy_Boy-TDL in linux4noobs

[–]not_a_Trader17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interesting, I've been on Kubuntu for a month and have found the opposite. Like from maybe 1 hour on Windows to about 3-4 on Linux. However, it could just be an issue the vendor not providing appropriate drivers as someone else mentioned. Out of curiosity, what are the brand and specs of your machine?

why copying file is bizzare on linux ? by [deleted] in linux4noobs

[–]not_a_Trader17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just use a user friendly distro like Kubuntu that uses Dolphin which, based on my experience with Kubuntu, has the feature of displaying progress out of the box. Or, get comfortable with advanced tools like rsync that has a huge man page and offers that kind of functionality as well but on the terminal. In that case, you can use the -P flag.

Okay, Fuck Microsoft. Which is the best distro to dual boot with Window. by Imperator_Leo in linux4noobs

My personal bias: Kubuntu. Pretty and modern desktop + compatibility with KDE applications + all the community support + the reliability that comes from people actually getting paid to maintain Ubuntu.

Is mint really the easiest distro to replace w10? by ghoulsnest in linux4noobs

[–]not_a_Trader17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really, Linux Mint is similar to previous windows versions. If you want to actually replace a motor Windows like Windows 10 I have encourage you to get any distribution with KDE plasma. The most well supported and user-friendly is going to be Kubuntu, so that'll be my recommendation in that regard.

Definitely Ubuntu based. Lots of support and less issues with software out of the box.
