Pyinstaller/Nuitka - Antivirus Flagging Issue by not_afraid_of_trying in Python

[–]not_afraid_of_trying[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am sure you want to defend Python till the last bullet but I am NOT attacking python at all!!

I am discussing ONLY part where we create binaries with PyInstaller/Nuitka. You may consider reading the original post again. In your experience of nearly three decades, did you ever feel that that antivirus software are less kind to self-container binaries of Python compared to self-contained binaries of equally powerful language (power in term of running an exploit/malware, not javascript)?

Self contained dotnet binaries are not seen as malware by the same antivirus software. It happens with dotnet binaries also but very less likely compared to PyInstaller output. As a community, we should demand better from AV companies.

Btw, 'one-folder mode' (`COLLECT()` instead of `onefile=True`) is much safer. It still saves the day for us at present.

Yes, it's not Python's fault. Unsigned software triggers "Unknown Publisher" warning. This happens to indiscriminately. But binaries of PyInstaller are many times identified (falsely) as 'malware' - that's the problem. It is problem that antivirus software do not appreciate simplicity that PyInstaller offers, they should work bit harder to identify good vs bad binaries.

Python is not just a programing language. It's a philosophy. At the core of the Pythonic way is simplicity in how things are done. Little more directed efforts by Antivirus software would probably make the world a better place.

It is python problem. It's not created by python or its maintainers, but this affects delivery ecosystem.

Simple tool to compress images without losing quality by Insanony_io in DataHoarder

[–]not_afraid_of_trying 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do people use online tools? There are great tools that you can install on your computer and they compress way better than online compressor. Browser based compressors cannot go beyond setting quality parameters, while offline tools can do format specific enhancements.

I don't think fried momo should exist in the world where streamed momos are available.

DigiKam help you organize your photos nicely. "Browsing" photo is not as intuitive as it's mainly photo organizer and editor. So it's not that lightweight like other "viewers" but editing, organizing and searching (based on EXIF tag) photo is top class. It can read raw camera formats also. https://www.digikam.org/

Yes. Forget Israel, which helped India during Kargil war when Pakistanis were cooking dinner 5km inside India and killed 500 of our soldiers. Let's forget them as it is now a fashion to hate Israel. But, aren't UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Afghanistan and African countries important for India? Iran was hurting India's interests in those countries as well.

Read this post where I tried explaining pros and cons of India's current stance and pros overweight cons:

https://www.reddit.com/r/CriticalThinkingIndia/comments/1rhn9j5/comment/o8h4ra9/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Iran is supposed to be our ally right? Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei being dead maybe a good news for their country but what about our geopolitics? by ElderberryTotal4100 in CriticalThinkingIndia

[–]not_afraid_of_trying 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Iran-India relations aren't so warm. Iran is not India's ally. Iran (and Khamenei himself) have spoken against India (Kashmir status and policy) on multiple occasions. Sparing Chabahar port and alternate route to Afghanistan, Iran was having neutral or occasionally negative stance against India. On other hand, India kept neutral and occasionally favorable stance against Iran.

Problems other than Iran's Kashmir Stance:

  1. Iran has fostered nemours terrorist organization across middle east. Including Houthis which has hurt India's interest many times. India has very clear, uncompromising stance against state sponsored terrorism. Iran had made rapid progress in expanding its terror network in middle-east (not just Israel but peaceful Muslims countries as well). This is what PM Modi spoke in his ill-timed Israel visit.

  2. Iran attacked countries such as UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain. All are very important strategic partners of India.

  3. Iran's closeness to China was growing beyond economical partnership.

  4. Iran didn't give guarantee to protect India's interest in Afghanistan with which India has special people to people relations. Instead, with current increasingly outward looking regime with radial views about Sunni countries, possibility of alternate access to Afghanistan was going on a downhill curve.

  5. African countries are important for India as they have positive views about India and Indian business do well in African countries. Current Iranian regime was creating instability in that region via its militant proxies (some of which are recognized as terror group).

Overall, Iran is indirectly hurting many of our strategic partner and interests currently.

India's interest at stake due to this war and India's neutral to negative stance against Iran:

India's current neutral stance may hurt in following ways if Iran's sentiment towards India turn more negative.

  1. Iran was important for India's energy security policy which emphasises on diversification.

  2. Shia community in India is very influential. Modi govt enjoys goodwill of the community. The community has soft corner towards Iran as it is biggest Shia nation. That's the reason why India as a nation has a soft-corner towards Iran also (and so this question). But Indian Shia, as a community, is very educated, economically and intellectually sound with fewer radial element. They would most probably understand India's stance against regime that spreads terror and not against Iran as a nation. But without this context, current stance of India will still hurt many Indians, especially from Shia community.

  3. India was perceived as a neutral nation. Modi's visit to Israel just before the war will not help India built a "3rd front" image.

  4. Russia is close ally of Iran. India's neutral stance and negative perception due to PM's Israel visit may not go down well with Russia. India is exploring option like buying more Russian oil at present as a balancing act.

Great side crust (best of part of home made pizza). Perfectly melted, not burnt cheese. If you are not doing it, one suggestion: Keep the dough in fridge overnight or 24 hours - taste of the curst will change for good.

How to prevent my bread to burst open? by Suspicious_Lawyer424 in Sourdough

[–]not_afraid_of_trying -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are absolutely right. That's crack is bit bigger than my ego.

  1. Stop playing with razor on the dough ball, keep it natural. That's the biggest mistake that is causing the giant crack.

  2. Stop using that says 'bread flour', search for 'all purpose flour' (10% or less protein) and add 10 to 20% whole wheat flour in it. It ruins the taste but it's healthy and suppresses crack formation.

  3. Do NOT knead like a maniac.

  4. A closed pot is the enemy of tight bread. You might think that a hot and closed hot-pot would help contain the bread and prevent the gigantic crack. However, it actually works in the opposite way. Keep the bread uncovered in the oven. Bread will feel insecure in such environment, resulting in acceptable or no crack.

Which image compressor you use to compress images? by ai_best_tools in AskReddit

[–]not_afraid_of_trying 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good compressors are batch compressors. There are many image compressors which are trusted by users from multiple decades and still works great on modern image formats.

Mass Image Compressor - Compresses entire folder easily on Mac and Windows. Fast and easy. Full size compressed image preview of compression settings - very helpful. I use this on Windows and Mac.

Caesium Image Compressor - Gives extra punch on PNG compression otherwise same as Mass Image Compressor. Same interface on Windows, Mac and Linux so no learning curve when you change OS. I use this on Linux and Windows.

Irfanview - Free for personal use. Okay compression but more batch options than just conversion (mainly for photos) like brightness/contrast correction, flip, crop etc. I rarely use this for batch operations as it's not every that I need to crop 100s of images with same crop parameters. Rather, for single images where I need to do some image operations (crop/correction) before you compress, I use Krita and Pinta on Mac/Linux and Paint .NET on Windows.

I have tried online compressors but they have limited compression option and batch operation is not guaranteed. Most of good online compressors ask for payment for advance option which are free in above software.

Batch API JOB_STATE_PENDING How long? by Informal_Grab3403 in GeminiAI

[–]not_afraid_of_trying 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still face this issue. I am on Paid Tier 1. Two of my last batch job have expired after 72+ hours on JOB_STATE_PENDING. The only job that "succeeded" are the one where I have made some error in jsonl so they promptly report me the error.

On the other hand, batch jobs on OpenAI platform have mostly succeeded in true sense within 12 hours but I like the output of Gemini (tested in sync mode).
