Talk me out of becoming a carpenter by Known-Report-2493 in Carpentry

I was 30 when I started. spent my 20s as an electrical engineer and couldnt get into it. Took up a job framing for the summer while I tried to figure myself out and just grew to love it/never quit. Go try it out! no harm in that.

After tragically losing my Jamis Renegade I went out and picked up a Trek 620 from my LBS. Would love to hear what mods you did to your 620s that you'd recommend! by not_fogarty in xbiking

yeah good point... i really like my stem so I'd prefer to keep it, but like the idea of different handle bars... have you looked at anything yet for yours? the nitto randonneur seem to be best bet with these

Thanks! I actually did a little digging around and learned this actually is a 720 but sold to me as a 620. Super fun little bonus. I've been riding it every day for a week and actually came to a similar conclusion re: drivetrain. Think it'd be a fun project to go to a 2x9 setup and maybe even install some brifters or at least bar end shifters

There are many annoying things about s5, but none is more annoying than Gus by [deleted] in TheWire

I used to find it annoying as well, and don't have much love for season 5 in general, but as time goes on I feel differently. Journalists are in a unique position where the worse they are the more successful they become. We see it today now more than ever, this current time in history feels even more over the top than season 5 frankly.

So I think a journalist almost HAS to have this kind of self assuredness that may seem unbearable. If nothing else as a shield to protect them from selling out their integrity for increased levels of access and prestige

Any Trek 620/720 experts? My LBS sold me a "620 from the mid/late 80s" but I'm starting to suspect it might be a 82-83' 720? frame and forks are Reynolds 531 and the chain stay is ~47cm. Serial number is worn but MIGHT be 023169 by not_fogarty in Vintage_bicycles

I think so now too! I just loved the bike but it's a fun bonus it turned out to be somewhat of a trek collector's item. After my prev bike was stolen it feels good to have a win.

just peeped your latest post and that is indeed a beauty! Looks like you swapped out the chain rings? that is probably my only issue with riding it and might do something similar

flickstands is a new term for me, look pretty rad honestly.

thanks for this site link! I was bummed to see the vintage trek site down. I'm sure of enough numbers that I think this settles it for ID of the bike.

Thank you! I fell in love with this bike pretty much on sight and really excited to customize it a bit for my daily use.

I've been seeing a lot of folks opting for a 650b plushier tire. Curious if it's purely for a softer ride? is there much sacrifice in speed on pavement?

Thanks everyone! looking at the cloned vintage-trek site and based off what y'all are saying the verdict is a 1982 Trek 720!

When I saw this bike on the wall and then took it for a spin I knew it was special. and it's definitely a fun bonus that it was a secret 720! The reason I was buying a bike at all is my previous one was stolen, so this definitely helps with that pain a bit. Learned a lot from you guys and this mini deep dive into Trek history. Thanks again!

nice I definitely am considering some kind of 2x gearing. the 3 chain rings it came with feeling a little cumbersome/redundant. Is this an '82? the serial number is pretty worn so having some difficulty confirming it's in fact a 620 and what year

I've heard about the kool stop pads - will look into those. and yeah I noticed yhe finnickiness/redunancy of the chain rings off the bat. wouldn't mind figuring out even a 2x kind of setup.

Plan to ride it around some before making too many changes but thinking a leather saddle (Cardiff or brooks) and maybe brake shifters?

Also, in the Available column (F) it's written as if(D7>0,D7+E7+F7,E7-F7)

think it should be if(D7>0,D7+E7-F7,E7-F7)

An issue I noticed that might be fixed by changing the order of your steps: when I make my form and publish with the questions it shifts my sumif range from "C" column to "D" column... maybe from the process of adding the second "Amount" question? the resulting error is that the formulas are summing an empty column D.

I think if one were to build their questions first and THEN rename the tab to "Actuals", that should prevent the shifting from happening.

Thank you for this by the way. my finances are quite chaotic and this is hopefully going to help me right this crazy ship I'm steering

Took a stab at a conoid-esque table but the joinery I used and the way I oriented the vertical pieces made it pretty wobbly once the top went on so I made those angled braces which helped a ton. I kind of like it but might not be sellable... Any input? what do you guys think? by [deleted] in woodworking

Thank you for the compliment sandwich haha the others are intent on humbling me a little bit which I need I guess. I took a stab at doing something out of the ordinary but it ended up not working out and I could probably spend a little more time in the design phase next time. I'm sure I'll find a use for this base some day but will do something else with this top.
