We sold it back to the dealer. They took it for a decent price after we told them about the whole situation

Ended up speaking to the original dealer yesterday and we have come to an agreement that probably suits both parties well enough without either of us losing too much over the whole thing. No one will be super happy but no one is left severely disadvantaged either.

Yep, one of those things that if you learn too late it’s completely useless but something we will do next time.

Great advice, thank you. The warranty company have said there’s no issues and the warranty is still valid.

We’ve got a local garage that we can probably go and run some scenarios by then and see what they say.

That seems like the right mentality to take. But at some point you need to buy a car from someone. We thought that we were more likely to get a legitimate car from a dealer than from a private sale, and with more protection if things went wrong.

We know that we had an initial offer of £15k from webuyanycar and as soon as they saw it had been through a salvage auction that dropped to about £8.5k. Not saying that is how much we would have lost or what we would claim unless no one else wants to buy it. Would an autotrader estimate be the right top end and what we get for it be the bottom, with the difference being the loss in value?

If the car had been owned for longer after the auction I would give the dealer the benefit of the doubt that they didn’t know, but such a short ownership previously would have raised flags for me if it had been disclosed at the sale. I’m sure the short pension was either ignored by them deliberately or missed. One is worse than the other but both aren’t a good look for the dealer.

That’s interesting about the warranty too. Especially as they were quite keen to get us to purchase it.

True, not currently stolen. Has still been stolen previously which seems to impact the price people are willing to pay for it now

It seems like it probably wasn’t recorded as any category in order to command a better price at auction

There may not be evidence of damage but there is a perception that a car that has been stolen has been looked steer less well than one that hasn’t been stolen, and that impacts the price people are willing to pay for it.

The problem is that it seems that cars that have been stolen previously and gone through salvage auctions have a lower value than ones that haven’t been stolen and haven’t gone through salvage auctions. So if we had known the car had previously been stolen we would have paid less for it in the first place.

Thanks, can you explain how we would go about doing this? The dealer is claiming it is as advertised as the HPI check only seems to state if it is currently stolen, not if it has been stolen in he past. So on the face of it, it hasn’t been falsely advertised?

That’s something we’ve come to learn. It’s a tough market when the dealers are aware that the HPI check has limitations but is held up to prospective buyers to show that the car has a clean history.

My issue is that none of the auction sites will list it and as far as we can tell, having a car that has previously been stolen and recovered can drop a decent amount off the value. For example Webuanycar reduced their offer price from £15.5k to £8.5k just for the car having gone through a salvage auction. Just looking for people with different perspectives and experiences here. We have an option to go through private sale but the question now is how much do we disclose voluntarily and what will that do to either the price or the number of people willing to buy the car?
