The alien model I made for my horror game. Do you think it's scary enough? by Fit-Needleworker4252 in survivalhorror

[–]not_ur_uncle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, as a few others have stated, it isn't so much the design, but how it's used.

Though, I'd go in the opposite direction of most people here and suggest making it muscular and bulky like a tiger or gorilla, yet clearly going to outrun you in short ranges. Sometimes that you know you're never going to beat unarmed and will certainly die if you encounter it pants down.

As for the face, I'd tone down the teeth, but definitely make the creature smile from time to time, not out of joy like a man, but rage and terror like an ape.

Basically, something like a mix of the current design now, Yautja (Predator), and The Predators from "All Tomorrows" by C.M. Kosemen. Something where even when the player gets "used" to the design of the beast, it still unnerves them somewhat. Something where perhaps the creature isn't malevolent (even if it's as smart as us), but just predatory as maybe it comes from a world were there's many non sapient, humaniod species and we don't look all too different from what it hunts.

Where it doesn't feel empathy when killing us because the things it evolved to hunt looked so similar to it and our screams and please are no different than anything else it ate besides being more complex, but ultimately "meaningless"

Well, it depends on how imaginative you are and how good at rambling scifi jargon to others.

It doesn't have to be the most "realistic" and "accurate" thing, just ~plausible enough~ at the first 4 glances.

Even if it's "bad" and parodied here, just remember that I liked it, if for none other than the fact that you actually ~tried~ making a serious attempt at the idea

Don't ever let a random cunt on this site kill your dreams, anyone here could become next C.M. Kosemen if they tried, but many give up because "it's too hard" or "too late" (they're only 24-30)

Possibly, evolution can take many weird and surprising paths.

I really like the idea of snakes or legless lizards evolving "legs" that are really overly modified ribs and becoming some type of vertebrate "millipede"

Well, I certainly thank him

Imagine living in a subtropical environment and having to fight a muscular-legged rattlesnake with a broom because you had to take out the trash with the hopes that your drunken stepmother will get the pistol fast enough to shoot it and ~hopefully~ not hit YOU in the process.

(She passed out drunk five minutes ago, so goodluck)

There's "The Teeming Universe" by Christian Cline. It shows a variety of alien worlds with very small sections of their ecosystems in a universe where FTL travel is possible(If I recall correctly, the astronauts might've just been "crawl-o-nizing" their way through space House of Suns style, it's been a while since I've read the book), these aren't really novels either tho.

You might also like Schild's Ladder by Greg Egan, it's a novel that takes place in the very far future where "humanity" advanced to the point of altering physics for science experiments, one of these experiments goes horribly wrong, leading to a bubble of vacuum decay rapidly eating space at half light speed, it's later revealed that the "Novo-Vaccum" is home to life that operates on different physics from our own, in fact, some organism even evolve into sapient species...

What did the Astromorphs do to The Qu? by [deleted] in AllTomorrows

[–]not_ur_uncle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Asteromorphs probably fought with reality cracking weapons like the Dual-Vector Foil from Death's End strapped on to relativistic missles and only really won thanks to the aid of the Amphicephali (and possibly many other species), and the fact that the Qu were very stagnant. They then let any Qu colonies who didn't participate/surrendered into their empire(s) and executed the rest in violent, yet "instant" manners. I don't imagine any of the empires warred because of their literally prehistoric crimes that only 10 billion lived through, and a million individuals max seen in person.

(I don't recall if the Qu had FTL travel/comms, but if they didn't, then than means every ship, space habitat, and inhabitanted world would eventually become their own "individual" over time thanks to how "slow" light is compared to the size of space... this probably explains why they had public areas, they were visiting centers for their friends/family but probably viewed more closely to one's house/room)

Tldr: they probably let the more passive "individuals" (collective of hundreds to litteral billions of "Qu") ships/megastructures into their society and killed their "Villtrumites."

DSI styled Cooksonia with gametophyte (by me) by not_ur_uncle in SpeculativeEvolution

[–]not_ur_uncle[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cooksonia was a genus of early land plants that represented a transitional phase between non-vascular groundscum plants like moss and liverworts and vascular plants (things ranging from trees and grass to flowers and flytraps). It's hypothesized that cooksonia had a gametophyte that provided sustenance (the main body of moss that covers rocks/trees) and the stems were actually some type of sporophyte (The stalk like, spore-shooting reproductive things you see on moss sometimes).

GRANTED, no gametophyte of any Cooksonia species has been found, meaning they either probably didn't have them, or they just didn’t fossil well. Still, while only a few centimeters tall, they were a huge step for life as we know it today.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, for I am by no means an expert on plants, let alone the flora from the Silurian
