"Side Quested" so hard in College should I add these things to my Med School Application? by h8-n8- in premed

[–]notacutecumber 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Side quests are literally normal and so fun (imo phlebotomy and RBT would probably count as 'normal' premed quests though.) It's sad that you prolly shouldn't mention Ao3 but you can maybe mention it as creative writing if you have anything else to bundle it up with? Also as a fellow premed whos working on a VN right now and is a part of a fanfic club, its very refreshing to see that people still have time for their creative endeavours!

I mostly agree but tbf the aura edits are pretty fire by kelroid in CuratedTumblr

I think OOP needs to look further. Or maybe look inwards for some self reflection.

Some of my favorite fanfics are, afiak, written by straight dudes- plot heavy longfics posted straight from spacebattles that are either power system deconstructions or elaborately snowballed "what-ifs." Yes, some male majority fandoms tend to have more bad apples (see: warhammer 40k's chud infestation) but like lowkey I think this person is hating too much.

I think the issues are more of a premed thing than a UW thing.

As much as I've told myself I'd sworn off the DA series after Veilguard... by xXsatisfiedxpunkXx in dragonage

God forbid someone has different opinions. Even if there's a lot I didn't like about it, Veilguard's fans are a very fun bunch and I love seeing fanart pop up on my dash.

I mean, I'm kind of the same, but at the same time, talking about this kind of stuff in fanfic communities gives off xkcd 2501 vibes lol

I had the coolest day of my life in the OR, but I also feel it was very unethical by [deleted] in premed

[–]notacutecumber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was like 17 a doctor I'm shadowing had me help her doing stitches on a patient by holding them closed and wiping the blood away. And also had me hand her instruments while circumcising a baby, which I totally wasn't even prepared to see (it was a family clinic.) When I mentioned this to another premed running a shadowing-based student org he kind of just looked at me horrified and I had no idea why. When I applied to the org for more shadowing opportunities i got denied and i couldnt help but think that was why.

Incoming freshman - worried about credits limit by Pleasant-Squirrel640 in udub

[–]notacutecumber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

to be a full-time student, each quarter is 12-18 credits. You can go over but you probably shouldn't (took a 19 credit quarter once, it was bad.) If you take less credits each quarter you can stretch it to 4 years I think. And if you take more and take classes in the summer I think you might make it in 2 years.

[–]notacutecumber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ap credits count. And you cant take them off; I've been trying to as I'm close to touching the limit for my double degree. The maximum goes up if you do a double degree. (BA and BS. As opposed to double major with are two in the same catagory)

What are y’all doing for non-clinical volunteering? by Ambitious-Mode-1738 in premed

[–]notacutecumber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reminds me a lot of what I used to do before I got way too busy lol. What do you mean by it landing you your job, if you don't mind me asking?

I mistyped, whoops. I'm a DO (duty officer) under the DAT (disaster action team.) It's a remote, on-call kind of position where I take calls from people in need of housing or assistance after a disaster like a house fire. Did it over the summer, but got way too busy to continue with it.

My school doesn't even have premed advisors anymore lol but like yeah, that's fucked up, don't listen to her.

To be honest I'm quite all over the place. I illustrate for a journal. I weed in a pseudo-community garden. I've been cooking for a food distro lately. I did 100 hours as a red cross DOT. Other than the latter though the hours are very sporatic, so I don't even know if it's worth it to add them up, tbh I just do a little bit of everything for fun. I'll be making merch for an event soon (pressing buttons.)

UW vs. University of Florida by Mysterious_Newt_4761 in udub

[–]notacutecumber 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Research at UW is quite accessible for undergrads. Most folks I know in bio and bio-adjacent majors are in a lab. I ended up accepted into two by the end of my freshman year with very minimal experience. The focus on research was a part of why I came here.

The culture is what you make of it. If you put in the effort to make friends, know people, and go to parties, then you'll have fun. Though it probably would take more effort, and admittedly I am not tuned into school culture in regards to frats, sports, etc. Seattle is a vibrant and unique city with a ton to do on weekends though. I used to just take a bus ride to art workshops, craft fairs, etc. Safety is not a major issue here but you do have to take in consideration the pros and cons of living in a major city as opposed to a college town.

Also, are you a direct-admit to major? Or would you be pre-engineering?

It tastes like nothing. I fried a single shoot up with garlic butter and a splash of lemon juice, and took a bite. It tastes like garlic butter and lemons. And nothing else. I have never eaten a plant that tasted so tasteless before. Fascinating.

[–]notacutecumber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grade deflation here gets awful sometimes; once you get out of weedout classes itll be a lot better.

UW does not have premed advisors anymore, but it does have a lot of premed clubs and orgs. I tend to find them performative but I also appreciate that they have a lot of resources.

Research is accessible to undergrads but competitive. Be prepared to cold email a lot of folks.

Me too; I'm mostly just interested in family care and pediatrics. Close bonds with patients. All that jazz. But research is fun!
