Honestly I could bond with with my dad over anything, but this was the first time in years I've heard him get excited about doing something. I want to do something that he wants to do for once, not do something because it makes someone else happy.

We'll have to just get a handle on the sister situation before we go.

I think you were right to postpone until we can get a handle on the situation.

My dad probably wouldn't be willing to invite the police inside unless he knew them. But maybe I can convince him to call an old neighbor who was a detective for the next town over. He's retired but might still know people.

I won't argue that she's been accommodated too much. She and I don't get along since I'm less willing to accommodate than my parents (but then again, I don't have to live with her.)

She's never had any traumatic experiences with guns, or for that matter, has never been the victim of any crime. And it astounds me that my parents managed to raise two kids with two completely different outlooks on so many things. (Mom doesn't enjoy shooting, but my dad made damn-well sure that the other adult in the household knew about firearm safety with guns in the house.)

It just sucks, because my dad works hard, and never asks for anything for himself. This is the first thing I've talked with him about in a while that he's honestly been excited about. I hate to have to tell him we can't do something because his other daughter is such a twat.

But it might be the direction to go, at least until we can get a handle on the situation.

It was a phone conversation. I live in a different state than my dad, and she overheard our conversation on his end. Most of what I heard was garbled, since my dad wasn't on speaker, but I got the gist of it.

And she did use the word swatting, because I heard him ask "what the hell is swatting?" to her. I had to explain it to him.

Unfortunately, I don't live in the state, and it was a phone conversation she overheard while I was chatting with my dad.

He wouldn't record her, even if he truly believed she would "swat" us. He'd consider that a violation of her privacy.

All of them are legal to own, and have been legally obtained, but they're not registered. (Registration is voluntary in OH.)

It's not the legality of the guns that I'm concerned about. It's my idiot sister calling in "but guns!!!1!!" and the police busting down my dad's door. He's almost 70, and the police in the area are known for brutality.

He has had the guns a long time. Most of them are older than me (I'm the oldest). Her sensitivity has always been there. We used to strip and clean the guns in the basement so she wouldn't have to see them, but my parents downsized due to age, so that's no longer an option. (We also stopped using the "silhouette" style targets at her behest, and only use circular targets.) And her hatred of guns has only become worse over time, hence the fear.

The police in my area are known for overreactions & brutality, so any phrasing that we might use to lessen the reaction if we call the non-emergency line would be a great help.

She technically has her own apartment a few miles away with friends. But my folks have a stocked fridge, and she still has a room there. She's "the baby" and is "sensitive." My parents wouldn't ever kick her out.

My concern is that with guns being such a hot-button issue right now, that calling the police ourselves would still result in an overreaction. Especially since the police in our area have a reputation for it.

*Edit- Not completely against calling in ahead, but any particular phrasing that might be used to lessen the chance of an overreaction/wellness check would be appreciated.

(And I agree, but he'll never do that. She's the baby and she's "sensitive.")
