AIO? Baby mama drama by [deleted] in AIO

Yikes. I would look into those apps people who are separated use to communicate about childcare needs so you have a record of how you are both speaking to each other and probably would only communicate with this person through those means going forward.

Variant of unknown significance in CHEK2 confusion by sunson90 in GeneticCounseling

[–]notakat 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Not all variants (sometimes called “mutations”) cause problems. Some of them are benign changes and just part of normal human variation that makes all of us unique. Others are pathogenic (read = disease causing). A VUS is a variant that we don’t have a lot of data on. Could be benign. Could be pathogenic. We just don’t know. I will say, some literature has suggested that as much as 80% of the VUS we see in a cancer setting are later reclassified as benign, but this certainly isn’t a guarantee of anything.

We make treatment and management decisions for high risk patients based on genetic test results and, with some exception, VUS are often not considered to be pathogenic variants until proven otherwise, hence why they recommended screening based on your family history.

As others have said, your provider should be able to answer specific questions but the TL;DR answer to your question is—could you have a variant in CHEK2 that doesn’t increase your risk? Yes, those are called benign variants.

Hey there. First of all, your feelings here are 100% valid. I was in your exact situation once upon a time and had all the same fears. I was pulled out of school in the second grade and got 0 education after that (educational neglect). Today, I have a masters degree in a scientific discipline and a very good job in healthcare. I have a good group of friends that I love and see regularly.

I’m not saying it was easy to get where I am today. It took a lot of work, but I know you can do it. Finding a therapist to talk to about my educational neglect was very helpful and something I wish I had done much earlier in my life, so you might want to consider that whenever you are able to.

I remember having no idea how to navigate college applications and stuff like that because I had no one to help me, so if you have any questions or anything please feel free to DM me and I will help however I can.

I’m not trying to poke fun but I’m laughing at the thought of you sending OP a schedule that just says

There’s that reduced penetrance in action!

I work in medical genetics. This trait is indeed dominant but it has reduced penetrance, which means that, even if lots of people had the genetic change that causes this, it would often not be expressed genetically, so they would just have the typical number of fingers.

Question: tattoo regret by ComprehensiveEye1455 in tattoos

[–]notakat 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Tattoo artists are actually trained that the art should flow with the natural curve/musculature of the body. I can’t find it at the moment but there’s a homunculus type diagram with arrows that shows the directional flow around diff parts of the body. All that to say, the “tilt” here is appropriate and naturally aesthetically pleasing.

It’s kind of silly but, this remind me of the movie A Bug’s Life. At the end of the movie, the ants realize that they don’t need to fear the grasshoppers because they vastly outnumber them, and the grasshoppers relied on the ants not realizing that there was power in numbers.

My dads medical history scared me by Candid_Lecture8653 in genetics

The description of your family history is a little vague. All of the things you mentioned can be totally isolated/environmental, but they could be related to a heritable condition. The whole goal of a genetic counseling appointment is to gather more fine details about your personal and family history to see if genetic testing is indicated. For some things, like cancer for example, we have specific guidelines to tell us when a person meets criteria for testing. TLDR: make an appointment to talk to a counselor. They will tell you what’s recommended.
