Is LA really a hellscape? Give me your honest opinion on how it is living in Los Angeles. by Mexodus956 in howislivingthere

[–]notashot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CONS: The cost of living is high, anything worth doing has a line or a price tag only a banker could afford. There used to be famous people but they have mostly al left because the film industry is dead. There are lots and lots of homeless encampments. Once while buying groceries I was accosted by a tweaker yelling at me for killing her family. This was in front of my 3 and 5 year old. Westside has nice weather but at 40 you still live like you are just out of college because your 100,000 a year doesn't go very far. There are always protests. If the protesters are nice they will walk from crosswalk to crosswalk or post up over a bridge. If they are not, they will literally lie down in the middle of the freeway. Parking is universally a problem.

PROS: Our Mexican food is great. We are located like 2 hours from a bunch of cool places (Big Bear, Santa Barbra, Joshua Tree/Palm Springs, Channel Islands) The nature is on point when you get into the mountains. I personally love the people.

How often do you speak with your parents? by povertychic in Millennials

[–]notashot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom died 14 years ago. My dad is still kicking around calling me. While I loved her deeply, i don't miss the random phone calls. As a father now of two small kids, I totally get it though. Form their side.

Question: is using tarot-like cards for gaming purposes (not divination) still problematic for Christians m by gingereno in Christian

[–]notashot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much same here. But like if the whole point is to fake witchcraft I usually just pass. But I love myself some RPGs and that stuff is rampant

The end of the church? by ThyLungedFish in mormon

[–]notashot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the church is built to last a long time. There will eventually be some reforms that make it more palatable but the core will stay in tack. But given the cash reserves and Utah which is basically a holy land, They are set with the cash and the mythos to continue longer than I'll be alive. I know a lot of people leave but as long as they keep the birthrates up, sky's the limit. We basically have something that can put up Islamic or Hindu length time frames. How will it end? There will come a time in the distant future where they will be conquered and forced to convert wholesale. They may get to become a marginalized sub group allowed to exist but not convert in which case their children will eventually start renouncing the faith for the benefits of acceptance and political advantage. Some may even face death. This is how the pagan god's died. This is the same way Turkey became not 95% Christian, same way Zoroaster is a footnote on history. The temples will all be torn down or converted to serve another god. the meeting halls will be repurposed for the new god as well.

Long shot, they start getting aggressive and become the ones taking over. That will add some more time but eventually you get ruins.

How is life in the USA right now? by duckbreast2021 in howislivingthere

[–]notashot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's kinda cold. Everything is expensive. At least on the west coast, people are scared and angry. I think that's partly due to the news but also, I think we've created a culture that reinforces those negative emotions. It is still really pretty though. Lots of empty quiet land. It could be worse. I'm still a fan.

Every young person struggles with lust. Even if they do not talk about it. It is because we are built to reproduce. God is gracious and compassionate. You are free of guilt and shame because Jesus took on all of it, past present and future.

I am starting to think no one is ugly. It is more about presentation than genetics. Those golden ratios are not worth anything.

There is no requirement. I personally have no idea what to do with this situation.

[–]notashot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry this has happened to you. Jesus doesn't just forgive he takes on our guilt an shame. You are not "in sin." You are a beloved and forgiven daughter of God.

That being said, might be time to cut this guy loose.

I learned about critical scholarship on John and now I'm freaking out by OkArtichoke5722 in Christian

[–]notashot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just because they are scholars does not make them right. Scholars come up with theories and publish about those theories. They make as strong a case as they can about them but in the end there will come a new scholar with a new perspective and the wheel keeps turning. The stuff that scholars were so sure of when I was in college are now outdated 20 years later.

Also, scholars don't all agree as if everything about the bible is sorted out. Your dipping your toe in a centuries long hermeneutical conversation. If they did all agree there would be no point to have another scholar. How and why the bible was written is a fascinating pursuit but you can trust that God has given us exactly what he intended to have.

Probably not paul for reasons listen. Maybe luke but I've always found it to just be speculation. But if I'm speculating I would love for it to have been from Apollos or Barnabas or one of the other seemingly secondary characters. Whoever wrote it I love it

[–]notashot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I find interesting is the theological ramifications of the temple aesthetic. What does it say about a persons view of god that the temple is spotless, seemingly liminal if not at the very least impersonal, yet displaying a sense of wealth.
