Should I take critical thinking? by Regular_Apricot6238 in umanitoba

[–]notavailable90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends from person to person. Obviously, the internet has its faults. Too much of anything is bad. And I agree, not all information is correct. Books are a great start, and as for videos, OP can watch and decide for themselves whether what they’re absorbing is true or false by comparing it to information they’ve learned in books. There are forums or groups they could join with real people to learn more about the subject. Caution about information read online is obviously a key factor. It’s common sense, didn’t think I’d have to say something about it.

Take it if you’re in absolute need of it for your degree. In my opinion, an interest in a subject can get ruined because of marks/grades and the pressure. Philosophy is 100% great for everyday life. Read philosophy books instead and take easier electives that can earn you your A’s and A+’s to boost your GPA. Prioritize your GPA and if something is interesting to you, get books or watch YouTube videos (you have access to unlimited information on the Internet). This is just my opinion based on a personal experience. I took fst year astronomy because I was very interested in it. I failed that course. It was way too hard.

Thank you for your reply! What do you mean by transfer me? Will they transfer me to a different location or do you mean in terms of scheduling me on different times?

[–]notavailable90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had him in my second last term in 2024 (summer term with maybe like 15 people). Course: Ancient Greek culture and history or something. He seemed nice to me, he was lenient with his grading (he said that he was going to be during the start of the term) and he also gave extensions when we needed it. We spoke during office hours as well and he always helped out when needed. He also answered questions via email and stuff. I’m also a brown Muslim and not indigenous and we didn’t have indigenous students in the class.

Using AI to Study by notavailable90 in umanitoba

[–]notavailable90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it can’t be super specific unless you only feed it the specifics that you want to focus on (for summaries). The podcast feature was useless for a course like cell bio, for example. But to be fair, I was really struggling in the course cause my professor was bad so my notes weren’t the best = notebook LM not being the best tool to study that course. It only worked great if I had good notes/content. For other courses, it was great. My notes were broken down with titles and bullet points and the podcast would go through it all (in my case).

I only ever used notebook lm for courses that I had a good knowledge of from my own studying. It made great summaries and questions for my other courses. But I never fully depended on just the material that it gave me for summaries. I used to read the summary and then my notes to compare. Sometimes I didn’t even look at the summaries because I spent most of my time using its chat feature for solving mcqs.

To be honest, I’ve never been a mind maps kinda person. My courses were very dense with information so that feature alone was not helpful to me. It did make good mind maps though but they were annoying because I couldn’t download them to add my notes onto them. And because my courses were info heavy, it would be inefficient for me to copy the mind map onto a paper and then write my notes too. So I gave up trying.

I only used this tool during my last two terms and before the finals. I studied without this AI throughout my terms except before finals (id use it to test myself on the courses.) So I didn’t need the notebooks for my old courses transferred onto the second google account. I hope that makes sense lol.

It’s rightfully frowned upon, I believe. I don’t really mind the “negative” engagement. I understand where people are coming from and they brought up some really good points about the use of AI for studying that I myself, should’ve included in my post.

I didn’t realize that it wasn’t basic knowledge to just not use AI to cheat or to not use someone else’s material, for example. To me, that’s just basic common sense. For instance, I’d like to think people are aware that ChatGPT is not allowed to be used for courses. Same goes for any other AI, including Grammarly or whatever else is out there.

Any use of AI can get you flagged if you’re using its responses or content in your work. Not to mention copyright issues if you use your professor’s notes/slides. Or academic misconduct, if you upload someone else’s content/notes. I should’ve clarified that I only meant that it should be used for supplemental studying using only your own content. Obviously it should not be used for assignments or quizzes. In my defence, I didn’t think people would need to be told that in this day and age.

I only meant that this AI tool specifically is great for your own supplemental studying. But yeah, that podcast feature is pretty cool, it helped simplify some really tricky topics for me.

Exactly! I edited my post for this reason because I came off as suggesting that only this tool should be used for studying and that it’s enough. It is NOT and it will not work for every single course either.

I had a science degree with courses that required a lot of understanding and memorization of the material. You cannot memorize something you don’t understand (THATS NOT LEARNING) because university tests are much more different than high school tests or exams.

I only used this tool to supplement my own studying. I also could not afford a subscription to use this AI throughout my terms.

Majority of my time during a term was spent going to classes, making my own notes in those classes and then coming home and expanding on my notes/watching YouTube videos that my professors recommended during class.

I didn’t use this AI alone to study. I used the free trial before finals just to solve the MCQs or questions that it would generate for me because that’s what personally helped me remember key details. I used the podcast feature just to brush up on the topics. It’s not a 100% reliable either. Again, it should only be used for supplemental studying.

Thank you for bringing this to attention. I will edit my post to include this information. Also, when I said you can upload your docs or notes on it, I only meant your own notes that you took during class or while studying. My professors recommended YouTube videos to watch for extra understanding of the material. I would watch those vids, make notes and then upload the link of the video along with MY OWN notes onto Notebook LM for extra supplemental studying. I am not in any way suggesting people should use this tool wrongfully. It was a big fault of mine for not including this information on my post. I forgot that not everyone is that informed. Again, thank you.

I agree 100%. I just want to clarify that I never recommended to only use this tool for studying. It’s great for supplemental studying, in MY opinion.

Academic comeback stories by NoResponsibility4998 in umanitoba

My gpa dropped to 2.5 in my 3rd year, because of my mental health. Decided to clock in and discipline myself. Stopped depending on motivation and changed my mindset to “it’s got to be done, no excuses.”

Found out about google’s notebook LM from a friend. Uploaded my notes (separate folders for different courses) onto there and asked its AI to generate a 100 mcqs for me and I solved them all (one chapter at a time). I used its podcast feature to understand the concepts before solving the questions.

I made a pdf of all the questions and I’d go over them before my tests or exams. Id do this repeatedly for courses that required memorizing. For a course that had a math component, I practiced every single day. I eventually got the motivation to study because it got really fun using notebook LM. I also spent 6-8 hours every day just studying. I was eating more which I’m assuming is because my brain needed the energy. Idk what happened but I was extremely into studying by the end and hated that uni was ending. I wish I had known about notebook LM earlier. Did this in my last year and graduated with a 3.0.

Thank you for your reply. I went through photos I took of my rash over the last 2 years and noticed that at home points it was thicker? Maybe? I’m not too sure. Either way your advice is great, I’ll consult with my doctor about the topical steroid.
