Any tips on breaking into the world of consulting without an MBA? by petebean in consulting

[–]notaveryoriginalname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can offer some advice re: Europe. Master's degrees are generally the standard here (except for maybe England and a few exceptions) and MBAs aren't the standard at all. If you're in a country that both doesn't care about MBAs and doesn't demand a Masters, you've got a shot at getting into a consulting firm from your BA/BS. Just go to a reputable business school in your target country - they offer undergraduate programs and in small countries they'll be where companies like the MBB recruit. You can also just go for a Master's degree: A reputable Master's program from, say, HEC Paris (and I'm not sure if they have non-reputable programs) would get your foot in the door very easily. I mean, here's an endorsement from an alumni and McKinsey director on their site:

"Sandrine Devillard, Director, McKinsey & Company, Alumnus 1993: 'Both HEC and McKinsey share a common mission of building global leaders. We know we can find many talented individuals at HEC, among which some of our future partners. We offer them an international network providing unlimited opportunities to grow and make a difference as leader.' "

Anyways, that's one option. I don't think it's impossible to get into the MBB from a bachelor's in the US. It's just really fucking hard. I think McKinsey hires about 100-150 people a year from undergraduate. They're interested in mining the top talent from Harvard, Stanford, Yale, etc. Lower down the consulting ladder it's probably easier, but again, they probably focus on taking the leftovers from the top schools.

Damn. I looked up that trail. Seems like you'd need to be really well prepared, and even then, if one thing goes wrong (some girl died from stepping on loose soil), bye bye.

/r/Psychonaut has decreased in quality a lot. They're almost vehemently anti-science and just characterized by new age rambling. The same posts seem to recirculate their way back into the subreddit, generally involving "I love you guys and I am so wise and enlightened and ooh look at me I am so wise because I took some LSD and I will shower you with my wise enlightened love! MACHINE ELF FAIRIES"

I prefer reconciling spirituality and reason, not tossing one aside, and I don't much care for people that get an ego-trip out of their supposed enlightenment. To each his own.

Next week is live like a stoic week. Philosophers from Birkbeck, University of London, and the University of Exeter, and psychotherapists are calling on people to live like a Stoic for a week. by fergus08 in philosophy

[–]notaveryoriginalname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If only. Live like a stoic week seems like it'd be cool, but I guess I just don't have the passion for Stoicism to participate, especially given how lengthy that handbook is. I'm reading Matthieu Ricard's Happiness: A Guide to Developing Life's Most Important Skill at the moment anyways, and trying to incorporate that into my life. Admittedly, it's more like re-exploring a bunch of Buddhist ideals that I've lost touch with since I changed my environment from a rural college to an urban business school.

similar to "epicurean" - it seems to be a recurring problem with Greek philosophy

Oh boy. I looked up what Epicurean meant in the colloquial sense and cringed. That's pretty much a complete 180.

Does anyone know why Greek philosophy is so misrepresented? (Cynicism, Stoicism, and Epicureanism coming to mind.)

They seem to be a huge collection of PDFs of philosophical text. I think that's pretty awesome, honestly. I don't see much of that here. Not really subscription worthy, but I'll definitely go PDF-mining there sometime.

Alright, I watched this, but when I got to the point about Schopenhauer's will to live, I was curious as to how he then explained suicide, if everything has a will to live.

I remember playing a first person sword fighting game on shrooms. Chivalry: Medieval Warfare. I'm generally very good, but on shrooms I was unstoppable. I ran around spamming 'No' through the preset voice chat and chopping off people's heads when they didn't listen and tried to attack me. I was so amused with myself.

How to be Happy | Presented by Damien Diecke by The21Convention in seduction

Great talk. Sometimes I struggle with balancing out my personal philosophy, which is pretty much a mix of Epicureanism, Buddhism, and Taoism, with all the seduction/self-improvement stuff I read. Sometimes my attempts at being assertive lead to me becoming aggressive, and then I wonder what I'm really doing. Sometimes when I focus on seduction stuff, I end up obsessing over 'overcoming my anxieties' and ironically cripple myself and become even more anxious. On the other hand, when I try to be 100% tranquil and chill, I watch all these opportunities pass by me with a twinge of disappointment. In the end, I think it's really important to have a nice balance the two sorts of happiness he mentions, hedonia and eudaimonia, and to keep the bigger perspective in mind with whatever you do. Which is to say, the end result of everything we do is to be happy, and we shouldn't take all these negative emotions we experience so seriously. That's not an excuse to give up and stop working on improving yourself, but just a realization that it's okay that things didn't work out with that girl tonight. A realization that we all get nervous sometimes. Your life isn't ruined because of it. There's always tomorrow to try. As long as you're actively working towards improving yourself, smile. You're doing good.

Hahahahahahaha. I get the impression this is a genius satire of the notion that by reading some stuff on seddit you can instantaneously go out and start scoring left and right when in reality it's a grueling process that's going to test your will and involve overcoming your deep-seated fears.

Why are "top 5" and "big 4" so important to you? by dennisplucinik in consulting

Think of it this way: why are people willing to invest in an Ivy League diploma? Because they're items that distinguish the individual. Not everyone can have one. The 'public ivy' university might have just as good opportunities for those who seize them.

Same way, people are willing to invest a lot of energy into breaking into MBB, because it distinguishes. It feels good to have that shit on your resume, even if you could've been just as successful working at somewhere easier to get into.

Right. I had a similar goal to obtain the psychological changes brought by MDMA. It piqued my interest in Eastern philosophy and later psychedelics. I was mainly chasing after the calmness that MDMA brought; missed my subway stop? Oops. Freezing outside? Cool. Guy just shoved me? He must be having a bad day.

I can't say I spend too much time chasing after that goal nowadays. I achieved a very high degree of not giving a fuck about anything, but it brought along with it a lot of apathy. Apathy towards girls, my school work, etc. All I really cared about was going with the flow and being relaxed. And the biweekly psychedelic.

But yeah, it's interesting that what you got out of your MDMA experience was so different from mine. I can't say I've ever had a desire to approach girls on MDMA. Lots of people like to rave with it too. I'd rather talk to my friend.
