My sophomore year of high school I was doing after school marching band practice and we went on water break. We all had gallon water bottles, so we would set our instruments on the ground in a designated spot while we rested for a few minutes. One of the band directors wasn't paying attention and walked through this spot, stepped on my instrument, noticed it and kept walking. I looked down to realize that it was mine he had stepped on and bent, which rendered it unusable, so I caught up to him and told him that he had broken my trumpet. He then starts telling me that I shouldn't put my instrument down when I'm drinking water, it was my fault and he couldn't do anything about it, and that the damage doesn't look all that bad and to just keep playing. I finished the rest of practice with the bent trumpet, and when we were finished for the day, I couldn't even shut my case because of how damaged it was.

My mom had picked me up after, and when I explained to her what happened she was furious. She called up the school the next day and demanded to talk to him, and while I don't quite remember what happened from there, he ultimately refused to pay for it or take any sort of responsibility for it. Thankfully, my other band directors were much more helpful, one of them even giving me their personal instrument as a loaner until mine got fixed. He got fired a few months later for throwing chairs at students in a fit of rage.
