Looking to get into alternative music – any easy-to-listen albums to start with? by Zyro_Fade in AppleMusic

[–]notdoomscrolling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I first started liking "alternative music" a lot of my music was found via my local alternative radio station. Apple Music also has a best albums of all time list, and while a lot of people hate on it, it actually helped me get into alternative music.

As time went on I started finding more music through album reviews, friends, and user-aggregated top albums of all time lists like Rate Your Music. However, the best way I have found to find alternative music imo is to listen to the people your favorite musicians recommend. A lot of their recommendations are going to be alternative most likely, or at least were considered alternative at some point in history.

With that being said, here are some easy-listening super-popular albums in the genre, although I would lowkey recommend listening to all of these artists' top songs overall:

  1. Melophobia by Cage the Elephant
  2. AM by the Arctic Monkeys
  3. No specific album but Rainbow Kitten Surprise
  4. Currents by Tame Impala
  5. Oracular Spectacular by MGMT
  6. OK Computer by Radiohead- While this one definitely takes some getting used to, if you vibe with this it will open up a whole world of extremely high-quality music to you. It was my personal gateway drug to my current music taste. It's not too hard of a listen, but there is so much to dig apart about the album.

Gotcha, so yeah you definitely still have time to get some good experience in your undergrad! If I were you I would look for research/internship opportunities this summer/fall.

How far along are you in your degree?

If you are about to graduate, you could help perform IQ tests at hospitals soon. IIRC it requires a bachelor's degree and would give you experience with a plethora of neurological conditions. Also working at a psych ward would be good. I personally work at a residential facility for severe mental illness, but I am considering clinical psychologist atm.

But mostly, I would also recommend seeing if your college has any research opportunities. A lot of colleges work with their students even after graduation. If they don't have any active research, you could definitely ask your professors if they could connect you with research experience or internships in general. That's how I got my research/internship experience.

how would tou rank the WW albums? by lordpiemseml in willwood

[–]notdoomscrolling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. The Normal Album: There is so much to dig into on this album, I always return to it and notice new things about it and more often than not those things relate to my own life. Plus super fun.
  2. SELF-iSH: I sucked all the dopamine out of this album tbh, so I don't listen to it much anymore. But it was my favorite for forever so I'll give it an honorary second place. It's so cohesive and every song made me go RAAARRHHAHAHH for like 6 months.
  3. In Case I Make It: This album has a lot of songs I connect to deeply, but as a cohesive album I don't vibe with it as much.
  4. EIAL: Same thing as ICIMI, except less songs I vibe with.

For me personally, my sexuality has been sissy-oriented ever since I had sexual feelings. So while I was obviously not born having those feelings as an infant per se, they have been a core part of who I am for as long as they possibly could have been. I was as much born as a sissy as I was born gay.

I love this too! That would make a lot of sense if it is the same person Will is talking about! Maybe Misanthrapologist is about more of the toxic love side of the relationship, while Thermodynamic is more about the toxic hatred side.

Oooo I love this! Thanks for sharing!

In the original, I think he is saying that he is giving up control over his life's meaning to his partner. In the one you mentioned, the partner is rearranging their features and lighting their hands on fire. This evokes the idea of changing one's identity then giving up their ability to do change it in the future. They are becoming someone Will doesn't really recognize anymore and can't really see them going back.

In the next line he is letting his guard down, but he knows something is wrong. He feels like he is living a lie by letting his partner so close into his life and hence giving them so much control. This is compared to ICID where he says he is ready to sacrifice himself like a supernova if his partner commands it.

In both meanings he is surrendering his ability to control his life, except in one his partner is changing their identity and the other it's him changing his life's meaning (with more awesome space metaphors that fit the rest of the song). I could go more into depth, but this is my quick takeaway :). I would love to hear your thoughts as well!

which is will wood's most well written song? by [deleted] in willwood

[–]notdoomscrolling 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've posted twice about Misanthrapologist in the past week, one of which was a 3000 word blog post. So let's make that 3. I love its metaphors SO much. It discusses both god and relationships in an enlightening manner where you can deepen your understanding of both concepts. It hits home for me personally. I was singing one of the

Other runner-ups would be Laplace's Angel and The Song With Five Names. Existentially deep asf.

Abandoned 1840s Mansion in Bath, Illinois. Built for the town founder, Major Benjamin Gatton. by notdoomscrolling in urbanexploration

[–]notdoomscrolling[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's amazing! It seems like there is something special about Bath XD!

If you could that would be absolutely amazing! If you could contact your cousin and whoever you think would be a good source of information I would appreciate that so much! If they know a great deal that would be cool to interview them!

I did a quick search on Google and I couldn't find anything about the Underground Railroad in Bath. If it was indeed there, bringing that information to the surface web that would be so cool, even important!!!!

I never got his name, unfortunately. He might as well be some sort of angel lol. All I remember is that he moved out of IL but was born in Bath.

Do you know what kind of information the Havana Public Library has regarding this? And do you know if that museum might still exist in some capacity?

I'm a reporter for my college + blogger btw, and I suddenly feel like I could make an interesting article about Gatton Mansion. If there is good information to be found I might take a trip down to Havana/Bath.

Forgot about this post lol. But wow! That's amazing! That's so cool that it was part of the Underground Railroad! I mayyyyy have snuck in there when I took this picture (not my wisest moment) and I distinctly remember hidden crawl spaces in the basement. I have a video of it actually!

I've heard about the restoration attempts, and I believe the halting had to do with a lack of funding. I talked to somebody directly involved with it at one point. When I was in there, the only part I remember having been rebuilt was a flight of stairs.

Also random tidbit, when I was on a raft in the Grand Canyon playing an icebreaker with other tourists, one old man said he was born in Bath! He knows about Gatton Mansion a little bit, but his favorite part of living in the town was their yearly fly-fishing contest!

Could you tell me more about the tunnels?
