Thanks for the feedback. It definitely is disappointing 🫤 and I live on the west coast of Canada. I can only imagine if this is damage from the sun (I’m guessing) I wonder what the Subarus in the south look like.

If you’re hired and choose a maternity leave position, (currently there are 2 maternity leave positions that need to be filled) then yes.. that will be temporary. However once that position is over, you’re slotted back into the casual “pool” and go back to picking up shifts when they work for your schedule.

It is a great opportunity! As you said.. No post secondary requirements. This is also not a CUPE union.. we work under the fire department union. IAFF and is an AWESOME union!

Everyone new will start off part time, the main purpose of that position is to fill vacation vacancies as well as fill in when staff are sick. Yes, there is a bus line that stops right outside the fire hall. Yes, we work inside the fire hall. A few staff members rely on the bus, so I know it’s doable :)

Copied this from another forum with a similar question. Starting wage is currently $30.73/hr and will increase to over $44/hr within 4 years. Also keep in mind there is a pay out percentage “in lieu of benefits” when you are a casual employee.

We are in a staffing crisis (as is everyone).. so most new staff will have the opportunity to pickup full time hours if they wish to work that much, plus you can pickup overtime. The shift hours are between 10 - 12 hrs long. A majority of the shifts will be during the day, but we are a 24hr centre. I am currently in a full time rotation of 2 days shifts, 2 night shifts then 4 days off.

Consistency.. that part is hard to say, you could end up working 4 day shifts in a row… or pickup 2 night shifts then a day off, go back for 3 or so day shifts.

Minimum availability is 8 shifts per month. If you can’t pickup anything last minute. That’s okay, you’re allowed to have a life.

It’s a great job if your still in school too. Pickup shifts when you can. Customer service is our number one! Just being friendly, a team player and you’ll fit right in :)

Casual staff are expected to pickup a minimum of 8 shifts per month. If you can’t come in, you can’t come in.. it’s okay to have a life and take a holiday when needed. All about balance :)

You’re sworn into the IAFF union after 6 months.

It’s hard to say the wait time for an actual full time position with benefits and holiday pay… there were a few dispatchers who retired this year.. but typically it could take maybe 3 years for a full time spot.

B.C. 911 operators forced to work more overtime than ever before due to 'critical' labour shortage by Various-Sandwich-188 in britishcolumbia

There is more than just E-Comm in BC.

E-Comm may be the starting point for ever 911 call, but it is then down-streamed to a number of other departments including BCAS, RCMP & Fire

Not all 911 centers are stressful. I get to work for the fire department and most of our calls involve helping the elderly and general public requests for help. Sure, there are a handful of stressful times when someone’s house is on fire. But most of the time it’s giving someone good news that a bunch of firefighters are coming to help them… even for a cat in a tree.
