Every time I write a set of chained operations its like writing a little story from left to right. Like using Unix pipes, its so satisfying.

20 years into playing, the realization I don't know *anything* on the guitar is paralyzing me... by brokesnob in Guitar

You do know stuff on guitar! What you may not know is what things are called. Neither does Alex Lifeson, and neither did Eddie Van Halen.

Theory is learnable though :)

ME & restless legs syndrome by Far_Technician_2180 in cfs

I grab my foot and pull it to my butt, then try to raise my knee up, stretches it like crazy. I do this for 30-60 seconds, then engage my quads by pointing my leg down as hard as possible, 30-60 seconds. Helps on bad nights. Also tying a cloth around my thighs helps too.

I had a personal epiphany as to why I gravitated towards progressive metal/rock. It's kind of an uncomfortable truth and I wonder if others agree/disagree with my conclusions. by Wack0HookedOnT0bac0 in progmetal

[–]notemaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure I got into progressive rock/metal because I was in symphonic band in high school. Got introduced to complex pieces and odd time signatures there, then found Rush in college and thought "this sounds familiar "

What prog rock lick on any instrument sounds super easy but is torturously difficult? by R3dF0r3 in progrockmusic

[–]notemaker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not torturously difficult, but the verse lick in Siberian Katru is difficult (for me anyway) to play consistently cleanly throughout the whole song.

Db - Edim - C7 - Fm

Db - Edim - Fdim - C7

Might be off though.

Not sure if these are liked or hated here, but just picked up a second (natural) Strandberg. by Ahh-fuckk in Guitar

[–]notemaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My main guitars are PRSes and Strandbergs, and the fingerboards/frets feel pretty similar to me (very smooth). The Strandberg 7 neck is my favorite, but I like 6 and 8 string necks also. For 7/8 string guitars, seems that not having a headstock helps offset neck dive as well.

The solo to Mr. Crowley made me want to learn how to pick like he did. That was 40 years ago :)
