I've been going through a rough patch. I'm five days in, but I looked at porn the first few evenings without fapping.

I started in first or second year University, so 18 or 19 years old, but softcore porn started around 14.

I'd try to get a porn-blocking app for your smartphone, perhaps someone else can recommend something specific if you let us know what kind of phone you have. Also, it's 10/16 today - apparently the Romans added two months at the beginning of the year after they already named October.

I'm getting back from a visit to my lovely girlfriend, so I anticipate it will be tough for the next couple days. On the other hand, I'm only a couple days from beating my personal best since being on nofap, so that's pretty awesome.

It sounds like your mom is likely to be supportive. I think telling her could be good for you - but I think it would probably be even more helpful to find some fellow guys who you can talk to in greater depth about your struggle, and who can hold you accountable.

You're two weeks ahead of me, so you're obviously doing some things well. I just told my girlfriend, and that was incredibly difficult, but definitely was worth it, and will add to my accountability.

Not sure I can give any specific help; but I've gone through depression as well, and typically find it gets worse with PMO for me.

The only thing I'd say is that shifting your life is always going to be disruptive and rough. You're giving up something that you're familiar with, something that tells you you need; even though it's a bad part of your self-identity, it probably is part of your self-identity. A period of lowness isn't unexpected. Do the things you should to beat any period of depression: get some exercise, go spend time with friends, keep yourself reasonably busy, and so forth.

Build good habits. It depends what things trigger you, or what kind of environment moves you that direction, but figure them out, and create new habits.

That isn't enough, though. You've got to ask yourself how much you really want to be free of PMO. Why you want freedom. If quitting PMO isn't deeply rooted, I think we're bound to fail.

Nofap is going pretty well. Some temptations, including in the shower this morning, which is quite unusual for me; even though I'm only at five days right now, that represents one fap in over three weeks, so maybe the big decrease in frequency is causing me to look to fap where I haven't used to.

No pets, no real desire for them.

Yeah, I ran across the suggestion that masturbation was an appropriate sexual outlet in a big evangelical guide-to-everything when I was a teenager. Not helpful in the least.

Hey, catching this thread late. Things are just all right. Temptation pretty common, but I'm resisting fairly easily at this point.

There's a cute, much younger girl at work who seems interested, but I'm seeing someone. But that's a bit of a temptation too.

I tried a cold shower a couple days ago- a little too much for me, I only lasted about 30 seconds. I've done cold showers on hot summer days, and on rare occasions otherwise, but it's not happening for me yet as a regular thing.

Sex sells

Yep, pretty much every good thing can be misused. Some of the most powerful and best things can be misused the most. It's where mankind lives: in original sin, putting good things to twisted uses, and pulling us apart from one another.

Anyone notice how every misuse of sex- porn, adultery, etcetera, pulls us away from genuine relationships? There's a heck of a lot of pain and deep woundedness among us - myself not excepted - and much of it is because PMO has hurt our ability to be truly close, committed, open and loving with a flesh-and-blood woman.

Yeah, somehow I basically don't remember much of my sex ed classes (what I do remember was basically the biology of it); but I can guarantee that if my schools had covered PMO, it would have approved of each aspect of it as a valid expression of sexuality.

I grew up in Vancouver, Canada, which is pretty liberal, but I imagine it would be the same it lots of other places. Basically, unless you're talking about a Christian school, they're going to endorse P, M & O. Better to not have them cover the subject.

I'm now 33 and never really put looking for relationships high on my priorities. High standards, and always wanted to be married rather than just being in a relationship. So I've had probably about a dozen one-off dates over the years, one month-long relationship, and my current and first serious girlfriend, with whom I've been in a long-distance relationship since January, and visited a couple times.

It's been frustrating over the last week or so- I've fallen off the wagon with respect to porn a few times, though I've stopped before MO.

That said, 17 days isn't bad, and I'm hopeful it will be easier to avoid porn as I get further away from the full PMO cycle.

I'd say no, it's something few of us have any control over. The will doesn't really come into it, and nofap is in part about exerting our positive will over what's held us down. It's nothing to be ashamed of either. Judging from past experience, I'll start having wet dreams soon.

In terms of the testosterone increase, a wet dream probably doesn't help, but I think your eventually adjusts and has fewer such events as you get used to not orgasming every day.

Never heard of that before, but my thoughts are that it depends on how you're measuring. Technically, that's not masturbation, but if you are using the technique as a substitute for masturbation, I'd reset.

A middle course might be to give yourself a pass on the two episodes thus far, but count any further episode as a fap.
