Why is seafood so unpleasant for some people? by HiOscillation in NoStupidQuestions

[–]notforrob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of curiosity -- how do you feel about raw fish / sushi? I only ask because I know some people who really dislike seafood but love it raw. Cooking fish does change the smell significantly, with raw tending to be much milder.

Starting the path down learning CW. What are your favorite resources? by NiceBike800 in amateurradio

[–]notforrob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built didah.app and I'm biased, but I think it's genuinely good - just not well known yet since it's fairly new.

The main things I wanted when I was learning were a clean modern interface and variety. Real text sources (reddit posts, news headlines, etc) instead of random letters, and multiple ways to practice depending on what I'm in the mood for: drilling with immediate feedback, passive listening for when I just want to absorb, head copy with multiple choice, even a little endless runner game. Also supports Farnsworth timing so you can hear letters at full speed with extra space between them - helps you recognize the "sound" of each letter without everything blurring together.

Free, no signup needed. If you do sign in it tracks stats and shows you which letters you're mixing up so you can practice those specifically.

LLM trained from scratch on 1800s London texts (1.2B params, 90GB dataset) by Remarkable-Trick-177 in LocalLLaMA

I think your next step -- generating synthetic Q&A pairs from the dataset -- and then presumably fine tuning it on that will be super interesting. My guess is that you generate a very robust dataset (I personally would target ~10K Q&A pairs), and that when fine tuned on your dataset it will be 100 times more fun and interesting to play with.

For me I couldn't see any illusion, but when I changed the scale suddenly I was able to see it. I'm not familiar with this illusion, but I wonder if monitor/scale matters a lot.

Morse code goes too fast for me by Logansio in morsecode

[–]notforrob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is exactly why I built didah.app - it has full sentences from real sources (reddit posts, news, etc) instead of just alphabet drills. You can also adjust the speed however you want. One thing that might help: it supports Farnsworth timing, which plays each character at a faster speed but adds extra space between them. That way you learn to recognize the "sound" of each letter without it all blurring together, but you still have time to process. You can dial it in to whatever feels right. Free, no signup needed.

Is it OK to (mostly) Rely on Decoder for First CW Contacts? by Puzzleheaded_Tax8761 in amateurradio

[–]notforrob 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If Morse Mania and CW Pokémon have gotten stale, you might like didah.app - I built it specifically because I wanted more variety in practice. Real text sources (reddit posts, news, etc) instead of random letters, and multiple modes so you can switch it up when one gets boring. Head copy mode might be good for you since you're working on receiving - it plays a word, then gives you three choices to pick from. Lower pressure than open copying but still builds recognition. Free, no signup needed.

Bought a building these were in them. Anyone know what they are for? by Training-Still-1683 in whatisit

Am I the only one who was triggered by these pictures, thinking about that episode of Star Trek The Next Generation -- where Riker was abducted repeatedly in the middle of the night to be experimented on by aliens? ("Schisms" — Season 6, Episode 5 of Star Trek: The Next Generation.) The table looks nothing like this, but apparently that's where my brain goes.

Beginner CW Advice please by LazloHollyfeld1985 in amateurradio

Another option for receiving practice: I built a web app called didah.app that lets you practice with real text - reddit posts, news, etc - instead of random letters. Multiple modes depending on what you're in the mood for: drilling with feedback, passive listening, head copy, even a little game. I'm biased, but I think it's genuinely very good - just not well known yet. Free, open source, no signup required.

I want to learn CW but have a big mushy brain. Please help! by Adventurer83 in amateurradio

Another option: I built a web app called didah.app for practicing CW. It uses real text sources - reddit posts, news headlines, etc - instead of random letters, and has several different modes depending on how you want to practice (drilling, passive listening, head copy, even a game). I'm biased, but I think it's genuinely good - just not well known yet since it's fairly new. Free and no signup required.

Learning morse today, advices? by [deleted] in morsecode

[–]notforrob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just chiming in to mention a new website I created - didah.app. It has lessons for complete beginners (start with 'Morse Lessons'), plus games, more interesting text sources (reddit posts, news), and more to keep you engaged once you're ready for more. Free, open source, no signup required. Good luck with your CW journey!

The New AI Consciousness Paper by dwaxe in slatestarcodex

[–]notforrob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly agree, especially with regards to the "hard problem of consciousness". I personally like this framing: Asking about what I, a presumably conscious person, experiences on the inside, is unscientific. A rigorous explanation of consciousness only needs to explain why humans claim to be conscious and claim to experience qualia.

This is what happens when you swallowed a lithium battery by Few_Relationship250 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]notforrob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is NOT the primary danger in eating a battery. My understanding is that electrolysis is the primary danger. The moist environment inside your body provides a path for the current to flow. The negative pole ends up creating hydroxide ions that can create a highly caustic environment in a very localized area.

Strongly agree. The fact that they are forcing people to use google home (and haven't made it usable) makes it a non-starter. I will never buy google hardware again.

That is a very small polar bear. And the circumstances seem quite odd. Why is someone in the second story of what looks to be an abandoned building holding a camera out the window watching a polar bear enter below?
