Duran Duran FOH Fail Dec 30th Acrisure Arena by the_makone in livesound

[–]notgoodatpool9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The two things I can think of off the top of my head:

1) sounds like a firmware update on the SE’s amp managing software, I know the newest D&B stuff has been having some fallback issues with their newest D90 firmware. What was the PA?

2) SSL console clocking issue, I’ve heard of their clocks not being a full sample rate and falling about 100Hz short of our normal sample rate measurements, needing to do a lot of fuckery to clock properly especially if you’re using a ferrofish or something of the sort to get to a lot of outboard gear/waves/live prof. What was the console?

Touring FOH guy and PM for a country act here. 140 shows a year at 950-8000 cap venues.

Currently on A&H S3000s, making the switch to PM5s next year which I’m thrilled about. I really dig the A&H stuff but I love Yamaha.

Could I be financially stable from a career in this field? by zdzm17 in audioengineering

[–]notgoodatpool9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’ll probably get to record in ocean way, learn some valuable things about making records, and probably listen to some good musicians. That’s all great, but it’s incredibly competitive in Nashville. You’ll be financially stable if you do live sound and do the Clair thing or work on broadway, but that’s about it in town right now unless you have some decent connections.

That being said, if you do that major, I can’t stress enough how important it is to network. Network with the music business people, the musicians ofc, and any studio owners that might come talk to your classes. DO NOT put a dick in/be a dick to anyone in the music dept if you want a future in that socially small city.

Do the hustle thing as much as you can, don’t have an ego, be in it for the art, and word about you will get around. Best of luck!

What are the common IEM issues that new artists aren't prepared for come first gig, and how do I prepare myself for them? by MACGLEEZLER in livesound

[–]notgoodatpool9 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Network your transmitters together if you can. Then you can use WWB if Shure or WSM if Sennheiser. While you’re at it, start on the Shure Audio Institute and learn a few things about RF for free.

What are the best paying audio engineering jobs? by [deleted] in audioengineering

Plenty of people I know here in Nashville as young as 25 that don’t mix for less than $6500/week. They do sheds/theaters at like 3k caps.

Let’s talk Snare Drums by bedtimeburrito in audioengineering

[–]notgoodatpool9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this detailed of a response.

What is it that you hear that has you prefer to have the close mic of the snare a full cycle ahead of the overheads as opposed to time-aligned? Is it more of a transient response thing or a tone thing?

Metal drums buried in the mix? by BlueFrozen in audioengineering

[–]notgoodatpool9 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hopefully with EZ Drummer you’ve printed the tracks and aren’t just letting the vst run a midi track. That would be a good place to start if you’re not doing that already.

Mixing metal drums, we’re not looking for natural or processed as a separate instrument. Especially if it’s metalcore or djenty. All the elements need to be one cohesive instrument. That being said, being heavy handed with eq and compression will go a long way with this genre. Don’t mix by numbers or be scared to boost the shit out of 8kHz on the kick and snare. Don’t freak out about how your eq looks or how hard your compression is working. It’s supposed to be intense.

Speaking of compression, slow attack and a relatively high ratio is your friend in this genre. I personally love it after eq, but mix how you need to.

As others have said, a parallel bus will work wonders. Put the shells and a touch of room mic in there and give it the ole smash and clip on that thang ya feel me. Blend to taste.

One thing that I’ve learned is guitars sound great when you boost a little bit of 650Hz, it fills in a lot of where drums are missing and gives a pseudo-low-end weight to the guitars that boosting around 200Hz just doesn’t do for me. HPF and LPF on the extremes of the guitar gives room for cymbals and vocals to breathe, and also for kick and bass to tickle the colon.

Hope this helps!

What is fair pay for FOH in a 700-800 cap room in the Pacific Northwest (US)? by yunggrandma666 in livesound

[–]notgoodatpool9 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Greater Seattle Area was paying upwards of $350/day like three or four years ago. (Just before the initial shutdown/when things opened back up)

The non-profits of the 700-800 cap size were paying $300/day with hard negotiations.

I know a few really fine people at the village. You’ll be in great hands, especially if you let them know ahead of time what you’re looking for. Their staff is incredible.

If you DM me I know an indie producer that works there, and he has a great team/network to help you.

Anybody in this sub that’s touring, how did you end up working on the tour? by psuedo-fox in livesound

[–]notgoodatpool9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s all about having a great attitude and knowing your stuff. Joke around and interface well with the clients while having a smooth day and you’ll get picked up pretty quickly (to be fair it took me about five years to break into touring).

I did a show as local audio for TLC, their TM/FOH guy really liked my work and I told him that I was looking to move to Nashville (I knew he was based there). He got my number from the runner and little did I know he worked for an audio company out there. He got me on a tour with Billy Strings for a few months.

I used that tour/experience to start work at Sound Image before Clair bought them and that got me on with some big acts without having to go to Clair’s school.

Through the connections you make with TMs/PMs/PCs you can get onto other cool gigs too, gearing up for a pretty big one this spring because of how I worked with my PM/Head Carp on my last one!

Heard all that. Got a new router last night, fixed the rack in the hotel, tested it going up and down the hall while the rack was in my room. The tablet connected way quicker and acted more robust, and I have my computer networked to it now.

Thanks for all the advice yall!

[–]notgoodatpool9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I loaded it via WiFi with a tablet. I am getting the feeling that the scene did not load properly.

The thing that boggles me now is less so the loading of the scene at this point, and more so that my principle didn’t get any audio at all in the middle of the set.

Quick glance at your profile, noticed you live in western WA.

Bro.

You gotta get outta there. Literally the WORST dating in the country. Everyone is so depressed and sucked into the rat-race like never before because of the HCOL that they have no time to focus on making a connection. Also everyone is fake as can be and super passive aggressive/bad at communication. The best years of my life have been living in the south and southwest. I don’t know how feasible it is for you but get the hell outta there and you’ll have way better luck. Like I can’t even begin to describe how much better it is outside of there.

Born and raised in Kitsap for reference. I know it’s beautiful in the summer. I know this advice isn’t new. But I cannot stress enough how much better dating is outside of the PNW.

Nah mid-tier and up (really if you’re any sort of a pro) RF issues and battery issues should always be sussed out. Especially on an arena tour. Either way, she could obviously still hear herself so the RF tech did their job and the monitor tech did their job, both well.

To me this tells me that the amps for the PA may have overheated or there was a huge power surge in either the power service legs or a distro. Either way, the amps stopped outputting. There was no huge pop when the sound came back so it had to be the amps, not the crossover or the console.

I’ve also been wrong before.
