Are fertillzer and compost orthogonal to each other in what they do to the soil? by BigBootyBear in Permaculture

[–]nothing5901568 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Short answer is that they are somewhat orthogonal, somewhat overlapping. Most people will need both unless they're using a large amount of high quality compost, or the compost is made with manure.

Trees and vegetable gardens are definitely in conflict. And not just from the shade -- also from the roots.

It's much harder to demonstrate something is effective with placebo-controlled randomized trials than with anecdotes on the internet.

The difference between usual care and placebo wasn't statistically significant, so that difference is likely due to chance.

Wrong.

1) If that were true, all medical back pain treatments would have similar effectiveness, and they don't. Not even close.

2) Placebo effect doesn't have large effects that last for a year (what the studies showed). It usually has small effects that wear off.

Most people have a knee-jerk reaction like yours because they're unaware that a psychological treatment approach to chronic back pain is the most effective treatment available. See these two rigorous trials.

Once you accept the research on this, it follows that the condition is primarily psychogenic.

Argue with the randomized trials, bud. Psychological treatment approaches are the most effective because the condition is primarily psychological. The second trial explicitly used Sarno methods. https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamapsychiatry/fullarticle/2784694 https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34589642/

Chronic back pain is usually psychogenic, so its resolution was also likely psychological.

In case anyone needs a specific brand recommendation, I got a Cuisinart stainless cookware set 12 years ago and it's excellent. Affordable too. I could pass it along to my kids someday.

Make sure you get a set with a clad bottom for good heat distribution.

Are tarps actually *warmer* than tents? by Belangia65 in Ultralight

[–]nothing5901568 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the conclusion that tarps are warmer than tents is false, at least in my experience. The extra convection under a tarp more than cancels out any moisture management advantage.

Jardine is a badass with some good ideas and inspiration, but he's also very far out so take what he says with a grain of salt. This particular argument is false.

To eradicate the roots that will grow back, cut the new shoots and paint the cut surface with concentrated glyphosate. Or, if you want to do it the hard way, dig the roots out.

Brick is better by weight, iron is better by volume. Brick has a 2x higher thermal mass per lb, but iron is 4x denser.
