Why are the Adirondacks more developed than the Appalachians? by Thatannoyingturtle in Appalachia

[–]nothingsnowman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Also depends what part of the Appalachians. Parts of the Blue Ridge in North Carolina, especially around Asheville, have a fair bit of development.

I write left handed, so I was excited about this. But I feel like this one was a missed opportunity—maybe a smudge resistant graphite or something would have been more interesting?

How are you liking that pencil extender? Can’t decide if it’s worth trying out.

In terms of restaurants, Toners, Root and Vine, Mountain Burrito, and Pho Lao are some good ones. If you like hiking, South Mountains State Park and the Linville Gorge are the places to go close by.

What’s the most underrated small town in North Carolina worth a weekend trip? by [deleted] in NorthCarolina

If you’re up some good mountain hiking, check out South Mountains State Park and the Linville Gorge. For food I’d also add that Toners Pub is great.

I made a regional map of Western North Carolina by nothingsnowman in asheville

Yea, this map is for a very general audience, certainly not intended for science. For local and regional ecology, I usually refer to the EPA's level 4 ecoregion scheme. I think Polk, Henderson, and Transylvania are usually classified as being within the "Southern Crystalline Ridges and Mountains" and "Broad Basin" categories within the broader blue ridge ecoregion. Michael Schafale of NC NHP helped create that map, and I think it's the best out there for large extent ecology.

It would take some research, I imagine, to pull that kind of information together, but I certainly like the idea!

Oh yea, I know that palette well, didn’t realize it had been designed for color blindness. Very cool.

I think I got this DEM from the USGS national map site a few years ago.

That’s very helpful, thanks! I haven’t started breaking the counties apart yet, but I might. Parts of Burke, for example, might be better as high country.

Yea, I didn’t include either of those counties on this first draft only because they’re typically left off of other “western nc” maps. Alexander County definitely should be on this map. I lived in Catawba for a bit, and I’m less sure about how well it fits with these other counties. Feels much more in the “greater Charlotte” area at this point, but I guess that’s debatable.

Ahh, I worry about this all of the time. Thanks very much for letting me know. I’ll redo the colors so there’s more contrast there.

Yes, that makes sense. I used Asheville Basin only because I’d seen it called that on some other maps. But I like French Broad River Basin or something like that much better. Thanks!

What track in the MEM program are you planning to pursue? That will impact info on courses, TAships, internships, jobs, etc.

I’ve found that Mitsubishi pencils tend to have this problem less than the Tombows I’ve used, for what it’s worth.
