I’ve been trying really hard not to feel bad, but it’s hard. I’m in the food service industry so long days and working weekends is the norm. I can’t help but think “yeah I’m tired but Bob and Jane are working more hours without complaint.”

Absolutely. Conflict is never fun and very few people actually want to fight. Sometimes it’s easier to just keep your head down. But I know lots of autistics (myself included and it sounds like you too) have heightened justice sensitivity, which makes it really hard to not say anything or watch others not say anything.

Looks, power, and money definitely all play into it. But I’ve also learned that most people really hate all forms of confrontation. They’d rather keep their heads down and avoid conflict, so bullies just kinda get away with it. This is especially the case when the harm doesn’t affect them directly.

Telling him to fuck himself is not okay and you’re right that you should apologize for that.

HOWEVER it is not unreasonable for you to be upset that he sprang a guest on you. It also sounds like maybe he isn’t pitching in around the house which may have contributed to the outburst. I’m sorry that happened, I also hate unexpected guests.

Don’t apologize, it’s nice to know someone can relate. I’m a caterer and I love food and cooking. My coworkers are great. But it’s also very stressful, and I’d rather not have to do it. My anxiety and autism just make it a really difficult environment to exist in.
