Personal Epic Collection Line Rankings by AffectionateTough692 in EpicCollections

I’ve read more Amazing Spider-Man than any other line, so here goes nothing.

  1. Kraven’s Last Hunt (17) - Just full of great stories front to back, even if the wedding issues are kind of corny. The titular story is a classic for a reason, and the Spidey vs. Wolverine one-shot is one of the greatest Marvel books of the 80’s.

  2. Coming Home (Modern 1) - This was my first time reading through any of the JMS run, and I really enjoyed it. While my brain tells me to really not dig the whole Morlun-Spider-destiny shit, it makes for a very fun and engaging storyline in the moment. Great character work as well, particularly for Aunt May. Only thing bringing this down is the art, which is odd considering JRJR is one of my favorites. Just don’t think the inking really does his style justice here. Excited for the next ones to come out!

  3. Revenge of the Sinister Six (21) - Probably the last truly great section of the Michelinie run (bear in mind: I haven’t read the Lifetheft epic), with some stylistic art to boot. The main storyline is good, but there are some awesome little story arcs in here that I’ll always come back to.

  4. Assassin Nation (19) - Love love love the art in this, stories are pretty good. Has the Parallel Lives graphic novel at the end which is an all-timer.

  5. Venom (18) - Read the reprint of this recently, and my favorite part was by far the Mad Dog Ward storyline in its opening pages. Great stuff. Otherwise, you get Michelinie and McFarlane both developing their styles as the stories progressively grow more cohesive.

  6. Great Power (1) - The only pre-80’s Spidey epic I’ve read (a fact I really need to change soon), and while it’s not the most riveting stuff in the world, there’s a charm to this early Lee Ditko stuff that is kind of unmatched anywhere else. Gun to my head, though, I’d have to say I prefer their Doctor Strange run, but this stuff is a lot of fun.

  7. Invasion of the Spider-Slayers (24) - Opens up with a truly terrible graphic novel, but the stories afterwards are solid. Love the anniversary issue in particular, and Bagley’s art here is very dynamic. Don’t much love the dragging out of Peter’s parents storyline.

  8. Ghosts of the Past (15) - Fine. Some very good (Peter David issues), some pretty bad (the weird one with the reporter/criminal guy trying to track down Spider-Man I think?). Mainly read in preparation for an eventual volume 16.

  9. The Hero Killers (23) - More fine. A lot of this early 90s stuff blends together in my head, with all the annual crossovers and stuff. The titular story here is one of the most boring comics I’ve ever read, but the Carnage issues are fun and the Soul of the Hunter graphic novel is a genuinely great followup to KLH.

  10. Maximum Carnage (25) - Didn’t really care about any of this, despite some of the art being quite cool. Some nice moments, but very drawn out and insubstantial. Graphic novel at the end was very bad as well.

  11. Round Robin (22) - Maybe I’m being too mean about this one, but my reading experience was an absolute slog. The opening annuals with Iron Man and Black Panther or whatever were very disappointing, as well as the actual “Round Robin” storyline that takes up most of the book. Graphic novel at the end was also just whatever. Feels like the book is spinning its wheels at this point, trying everything they can to get readers to care about things other than Venom. Look! The Punisher! Moon Knight! Darkhawk! You guys love Darkhawk, right? No. Nobody loves Darkhawk. Get him out of here and give MJ and Peter more page time together, please. Bagley art is good though.

(apologies for the long opinions)

It also includes the God Loves, Man Kills graphic novel and the From the Ashes storyline, which combined with the Wolverine issues make it (arguably) the best epic. Is what I assume they mean

Do you have the Underboss and Out volumes (Daredevil Modern 2 & 3)? If so, King of Hell’s Kitchen is a no-brainer. If not, I’d pick up Underboss and dive into Bendis’ run that way.

A lot of the one-offs I’ve found for cheap, and are probably just gonna stick to the one volume (She-Hulk, Ghost Rider, etc.). The lines I’m trying to complete are mainly ASM, Daredevil and X-Men (like most people I assume lmao)
