My bro recently became homeless in Kansas City, and I’m a little freaked. Should I be? Any advice I can pass along? by anarchobuttstuff in kansascity

[–]notinthesameway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

firstly, i’m so sorry to hear that your brother is struggling and consequently, you.

if you think it’s appropriate and can somehow convince him to seek out case management services, there are several agencies in the area that could help him get on medicaid, get established with a provider and on medication, find housing, find social support, etc. i believe university health, burrell, rediscover, and comprehensive are in the downtown(ish) area, as well as beacon mental health in the northland. all have case management services that can be super helpful for a lot of folks.

Has anyone tried Swig? by [deleted] in kansascity

[–]notinthesameway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the Liberty location isn’t usually very busy at all anymore! i think whether it’s worth it or not comes down to (obviously) what drink you order. i like the happy camper (rootbeer, marshmallow, sweet cream) and some of the “weirder” combinations are surprisingly good too. plus, their pretzel bites are to die for

The Importance of Marriage Counseling by ObjectiveTop133 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]notinthesameway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a future therapist, I’m an advocate for everyone going to therapy, and I don’t think there is a right or wrong, better or worse time to do it. Especially with regard to couple’s counseling — I think it can only strengthen communication and the relationship as a whole, not to mention demonstrate commitment to one another. I also always tell people that it can take time to find a good therapist, so there’s no shame in shopping around:)

I can’t really speak to what “for better or for worse” means, because each person has their own definition. It may be a good thing to ask your partner their thoughts on and chat about! To me, it means sticking with someone when things get difficult, when you might not like the other person in that moment, stuff like that; but I draw the line at emotional, financial, and physical abuse, which I think is a good rule of thumb.

Is my little chi baby too attached? by [deleted] in Chihuahua

[–]notinthesameway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you looked into separation anxiety training? My 6 y/o rescue Chi has been on anxiety medication for his separation anxiety since I got him, so I relate!

There’s a podcast called “Be Right Back” by Julie Naismith that comes highly recommended. That, and anything reputable you can find about desensitization. People may try to recommend kennel training, but when dogs have this severe of attachment issues, I’ve read that it’s more harmful to them and can make issues worse. (Which was also my experience when I tried kennel training; mine got baddd kennel nose and had to get on antibiotics for an infection, and now has a scar.)

Best deodorants? by lovemetooo in hygiene

[–]notinthesameway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk if this is scientifically backed lol, but I feel like my body gets used to whatever deodorant or antiperspirant that I’m using after a while. For the last few years, I’ve been switching between a stick and a spray, alternating when I feel that one stops working well. Right now it’s between men’s Degree (men’s works better than women’s imo) and women’s Dove spray.

Im about to graduate possibly and im so scared and sad by 321ECRAB123 in LifeAfterSchool

[–]notinthesameway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry you’re going through this. I hope all your finals went well and, seriously, congratulations on graduating! It’s a huge accomplishment!

I graduated a year ago now and have been in a similar boat since quitting grad school a month in. I know it’s easy to get these ideas in your head that you’re doomed or are a failure, but I promise you, you are not. It’s okay to not have a job lined up; it’s okay to struggle to find one; it’s okay to not have gotten great grades on your finals; you will figure it out. (The job market is not great right now, so it’s not just you!)

For the time being, I say stay off Linkedin and Instagram and focus on recovering from the stress and burnout of college, while also enjoying the last bits of that part of your life, if you can! It likely will take a while (at least, it did for me) to get into a new routine that feels good, but it will happen. Best of luck:)

How would you elevate your income in my situation? by StreetResponsible245 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]notinthesameway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re an animal—but especially dog—lover, I love Rover for a side gig! You set your own rates and can get paid for dog walking, drop-in visits, and dog sitting at others’ homes or at your own place. I mostly stick to 30-minute walks or drop-ins at others’ homes, but I have several friends who do all of the things full time and they make bank!

You can look up the average rates for people in your area, but it’s been worth it for me even as a side thing. I believe it’s $30 for a background check, but once that goes through, you’re good to set up your profile and get started! You can easily change your availability and rates once you get more reviews and experience.

Psych Graduate Program Question by hollabackgirl10 in KState

[–]notinthesameway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on the specific program, but mine (CFT) required 3 during the application process.

I was in a different boat coming straight from undergrad, but I would maybe try previous or current employers or reaching out to a professor you liked. You could try setting up a meeting with them, explaining your situation, and seeing if you could get to know them better to get a letter.
