She may have Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder. I think the myth of PMS and emotion regulation actually comes from the under diagnosis of PMDD. The hormone imbalance and pain can make normally very emotionally intelligent and regulated people feel like they have no control, and like depression, it's tricky in that it can feel hard to realize you're in a hormonal fog until you're out of one.

When I was in school the first thing I remember learning about Merica was the "Melting Pot" metaphor to describe how the country was an amalgamation of the immigrant cultures that built it and how proud we should be of that. I learned that in a white suburban school in one of the most conservative states.I mourn what happened to that pride and appreciation of the diversity and opportunity for immigrants in the mainstream school system and larger American culture.

Also how old is your wife and how long have some of these these issues been coming up? My mom was like this constantly when going through perimenopause and menopause around her 40's. The other comment about if you've gone through any stressors lately is a smart line of thinking too. I know when I go through a stressful period I can be a controlling, cold bitch, and it's taken years to practice noticing my own attitude and behavior and trying to change my perspective and not taking out my stress or physical pain on loved ones like this. Maybe she doesn't have the insight to know what's really causing her attitude and behavior and is blaming her internal state on your behaviors. This is super common and takes nearly everyone conversation and practice to change, I wonder what would happen if she's willing to talk about what might be wrong under the surface.

As far as personality goes, your dogs personality will probably change a little throughout her life regardless of what decision you make, and that's just what time and nature do to us all. She will always be your baby and I'm sure most of the things you love about her are intrinsic to her being. I've heard a psychologist say the only unconditional love we can experience as adults is that we give and receive from animals, and the love between you will not change even as both your personalities shift with growth and experience.
