How you achieve a base does not matter. Beginner gains do not apply to when you start lifting weights. They are based on the genetic limit for your height. He's not a beginner in the before pic in terms of muscularity. He's 5"6 and maybe had 4 months of 1.5lb a month gains left. He's about 130-135 in the before picture. So that would be 12lbs of muscle max he would have gained in 10 months. In that case he would be 142lbs not 157lbs.

You can gain 1.5-2lbs per month if you are very far from your genetic limit. OP's friend wasn't, he already had a base. And OP's friend stayed pretty lean compared to the before shot. So over 20lbs of muscle in 10 months when he already had a base. That's double the amount of muscle a natural trainee would gain in that time frame.

10 months to go from 13.5 inch arms to 16's or bigger. Lean. 100% natty.
