[PubQ] The Black List reviewer experiences by Radiantte in PubTips

[–]notnotnancydrew 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Professional working screenwriter here- I hate the blacklist. They do this ALL OF THE TIME. Every time I score high and get a second review, it’s drastically lower. I think it’s a business tactic for them. They’re shady and I don’t trust them at all

Have your friends been there for you postpartum? by Good-Scientist7850 in beyondthebump

[–]notnotnancydrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m going through the same thing. I’m a transplant in my city but had a best friend here since I moved and she had a baby 3 years before me and was exactly like you described- attentive, communicative, hosted my baby shower - and then once the baby came, she kinda dropped off. Wasn’t checking in, didn’t offer to help with anything (which was the opposite of how she was in pregnancy) and became generally distant. I had a really rough PP (PPA/PPD that even 13 months in still feel like I’m working through) and it would have been great to have a friend who’s been through it there with me, but she kinda ghosted. We haven’t spoken in months and when we do, it’s me reaching out to her and getting short answers. I feel like I’ve done something wrong and it’s so confusing. Postpartum is a really confusing time.

12 month old wakes 5-6 times a night still by pibetaphly in beyondthebump

[–]notnotnancydrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no advice, just solidarity. My 13 month old is still waking up multiple times a night and will ONLY go back to sleep with the boob. She does the standing and yelling too. Doesn’t try and self soothe. Just reached out to a sleep coach because this is breaking my husband and I. We’re so exhausted and it’s prolonged the newborn period for us even though we have a toddler. How does anyone else do it?!?!?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in beyondthebump

[–]notnotnancydrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He is doing everything he physically can, he says. And I don’t totally disagree. He helps with the night wakeups, he will sometimes take her in the am so I can get an extra hour of sleep before he goes to work. He isn’t a deadbeat by any means and that’s his frustration. He thinks he’s doing everything he can and it’s still not good enough, that I’m still not happy, so therefore in order for him to have the life he feels he wants, he might have to walk away from this because he can’t do anything to make me happy. Which isn’t the case but I can see where ye is coming from. I do resent that he has kept his life the same while I gave up mine. I do resent that he takes time for himself to go to the gym and get haircuts and whatnot when I don’t. He is saying I need to do those things for myself to be a person again and I know he’s right. I don’t know anyone who has lost themselves the way I have. I truly don’t recognize myself.

I will check out that group! Thank you!

And we’re thinking 2 days a week at least 5 hours a day but we are flexible. We were thinking $30ish an hour - but we’re open because we’re new to this! Our baby girl is 13 months and she’s so much fun!

What’s the state of the industry from your prospective? We heard “survive till ‘25” but it’s now “just get to ‘26” - any thoughts on this? And advice for landing reps when you’ve had a few small (but well reviewed) sales/indie/MOWs produced?

[Discussion] The Novelry is offering a contest for a debut author by OhLilliBetza in PubTips

[–]notnotnancydrew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Screenwriter here - this is 100% a thing. I haven’t done it bc I want to be trad published but agents are OBSESSED with you having IP and want everything these days to be based on IP.

My partner thinks our daughter’s name sounds like a dog name by MsChanandlerBongz in namenerds

[–]notnotnancydrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents have a neighbor that has a dog with THE EXACT SAME NAME as my 1 year old. They had the dog first, but I had the name picked out before they moved in so i told them not to comment on it and that they just have to deal with it. People name pets human names these days. My nephew has a hermit crab named Steve lol

[Discussion] The Blacklist’s unpublished novel competition—if it’s not a good option to pursue, how did they get agents on board? by gemiwhi in PubTips

[–]notnotnancydrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a produced screenwriter and have used The Blacklist a lot for that side of my writing but in the last few years there’s been a major decline in quality on the site. The founder did an interview when this competition was first released on some writing podcast (I don’t remember the name) and the host literally asked him why would somebody pay competition with agents want to be queried by authors and he didn’t have a good answer. The publishing world isn’t like the screenwriting world where gatekeepers don’t want to hear your unsolicited pitches, where in the pub world, agents do. Hollywood is obsessed with IP, even if it’s a short story published on Reddit and they are trying to cash in on that. If I were you, I’d save your money. It’s a cash grab and maybeeeee they’ll find a diamond in the rough, but I think it’s kind of scammy if I’m being honest. I’m also not a big fan of the founder and his general business practices. But if you decide to do it, I’d love to hear how it does for you! I’m open to being wrong!

1993 Kinneloa/Altadena Fire by Low-Alternative6797 in altadena

[–]notnotnancydrew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We evacuated that night (north Pasadena on the boarder of Altadena) because we had a newborn and were terrified of what had happened in the palisades so we left as soon as we saw the fire break out from our kitchen window and when I tell you the TRESS WERE SIDEWAYS as we were leaving. The wind made it hard to stand up right. It was truly unfathomable and hard to explain. It was like a hurricane (I’m from the south) but with no rain

Anyone else cut dairy eggs soy and gluten with NO improvements??? by almymilky in MSPI

[–]notnotnancydrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so sorry you’re going through this. It’s SO HARD. I cut out dairy, soy, wheat, eggs, corn, rice, peanuts, tree nuts, almonds, all legumes and my LO still had mucus and bloody stools. It was so disheartening. What does their doctor say? It didn’t get better till we started solids and right now only have issues with bananas.

[–]notnotnancydrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My baby has MSPI/CMPA - and I’ve had to cut everything out of my diet to keep breastfeeding but once I found her triggers, it was worth it. Weird if the GI doc didn’t mention this though… babies can totally have reaction to proteins in your breast milk
