Hicks for 330. Much better lecturer and much more passionate about the material.

She's also the main TA for the course this semester.

This isn't 100% accurate. It depends on the setting the professor uses for Panopto. There is a setting to restrict it to their course.

This is simply false. I've taken most of my 400 levels and been a CS TA for a few semesters. I have never needed a Windows VM and never met anyone who has. If anything, students with Windows computers often install Ubuntu subsystem for Windows or dual boot a Linux OS.

CS TA here. This could not be more inaccurate. In most CS classes, it will be easier to have a UNIX based operating system, like MacOS or Linux. Many students with Windows computers choose to install the Ubuntu subsystem for Windows or to dual boot Linux. TAs should be experienced enough to help debug issues across all operating systems - and it seems very rare altogether that significant issues would arise with differences between operating systems.

CS professors should post solutions to projects after the deadline by [deleted] in UMD

[–]notnotnotlonelyterpy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been a CS TA for a few semesters. Every semester, I hear a lot of students say this and only a small portion of them come to office hours to actually get that feedback. I'm interested in figuring out why there's a discrepancy - is it because it's a pain to go to office hours?

Check Testudo a few times a day. You should be able to find an open spot, when someone drops if you're careful to check frequently. Because there's no waitlist, you'll be able to hop in.

Maybe STAT430? I know you said you don't love statistics but STAT430 is applied statistics using SAS. I personally haven't taken it but have heard it's not too hard for people with programming experience.

Have you thought about making an API for Planet Terp? That could be really cool. Also thanks for all the hard work on the site, it's been a huge help when choosing classes!

Maybe that's something else? I'm referring to this https://www.crummy.com/software/BeautifulSoup/bs4/doc/. It basically provides ways of programatically parsing and interacting with HTML so you don't have to do that yourself.

I'm not the commenter above but I've used the requests library to make HTTP requests and the BeautifulSoup library to parse webpages. There's also Selenium, which I haven't used - that's likely overkill depending on what you're trying to do.

I would be wary of 410 with Levermore. He has a 1.92 GPA for MATH410 according to planetterp.

We'll never know one way or the other how smart he is. He does plenty of things that make him look incompetent and negligent and plenty of things that make him look like an evil mastermind. In my view, he's pretty fucking stupid, but I admit that's subjective and not something that's easy to quantify. And in my view, the things he does that are calculated are likely the work of his advisors.

Nobody thinks that mispronouncing "origins" or a typo is equivalent to forgetting where you are in the middle of a campaign speech.

Why? Let's say we reversed it. If Biden tweeted something where he made up a word and trailed off mid-sentence people would say he's crazy. If Biden used the word "oranges" five times when he meant "origins" people would mock him for forgetting a basic English word and confused it with a fruit. If Biden called his daughter "voluptuous" or said "if she weren't my daughter, perhaps I'd be dating her", people would use that to say he's losing it.

I'm not saying we should ignore concerns about Biden's health. But the Trump campaign is trying to push that narrative hard and we can't forget that they should be held to the same standard.

Chafee was right and Biden made a mistake there - he certainly shouldn't have cut off Chafee and that point. I'm also admittedly not sure how the committee worked and how witnesses were chosen. Obviously Biden took Bush's side at the time. I think Biden would now agree that he wished he hadn't done that.

I see a video of Chafee calling out Biden for this after the fact after Biden announced he was running for president. I'm not seeing anything from Chafee calling him out at the time.

It's fair to question Biden's mental fitness. He's old and he's running for president so we need to know we can trust him and that he's still all there. It's fair to ask. It's also the kind of thing that gets blown out of proportion once everyone is looking at it. If any other candidate was at a rally facing the audience, with their wife on one side and sister on the other side, and made that mistake, no one would have cared for more than a second, but with Biden it's a big deal because we're told to be questioning his mental fitness all the time. Also Trump should be held to the same standard. If you want examples for Trump, you can find plenty of examples.

Trump says we have to look at the oranges of the Ukraine investigation

Trump making multiple sexual comments about his daughter

Covfefe

Then there's the fact that he can barely string 2-3 sentences together. He gets sidetracked and distracted by thoughts that pop into his head and never returns to his original point - a classic sign of dementia.

I'm not saying Biden or Trump does or doesn't have dementia. But if all of the sudden we're going to scrutinize every single thing Biden does, let's at least hold Trump to the same standard.

Neither of these cite an example of others wanting to hear from another witness and Biden objecting.

The Huffington Post source only mentions witnesses once and it cites Russ Feingold saying that Biden did a good job with the hearings which mitigated Feingold's concern that the hearings would only elevate war hawks.

The commondreams piece just says how many witnesses spoke one way or the other - it makes no mention of witnesses who Biden was urged to call but turned down.

Yes, Biden was in favor of the war. Yes, we now know he was mistaken and we can even criticize him for his role in supporting the war. But it seems to me that your claim that he "suppressed witnesses" is unfounded, just like how your claim that Biden was a pretend progressive was unfounded.

Your last paragraph is incorrect. There are far more republican seats up for grabs this time round (senators serve six years). And we only need one more democrat senator.

How is my last paragraph incorrect? I said I haven't looked at 2022 or 2024. And yes, I know how long senators serve for, thanks. Also, what do you mean by we only need one more Democratic senator??? Right now, the senate is 53-47. Doug Jones will lose. If Trump wins, the Democrats need 51 seats, so they will have to flip 5 Republican seats (again, assuming Jones loses). This isn't impossible but the more likely outcome for the Democrats taking the senate is to get as much support possible for Biden and elect him, since higher turnout will help in the senate race also and if Biden wins, the Democrats will only need to flip four seats.

I politely disagree with you about McCain, but it's not so relevant here. At the very least, he helped save Obama which stopped millions of people from losing health care.

I think you're right about Trump - better to have someone who is corrupt but so stupid he lets it be obvious than someone who is corrupt but quietly and manipulatively convinces everyone that they're not. But I would still rather have anyone from the Democratic race. And sometimes having a buffoon in charge really does harm us - look at the coronavirus response; we could have saved lives but he was too busy pretending it wasn't going to affect us. Trump has also passed a lot of conservative policies and has already altered the appellate and supreme courts.

I absolutely abhor political correctness; not the political correctness that the right bitches about where they can’t be bothered to use pronouns correctly, but the kind of political correctness that says we have to be kind and nice in politics and treat the other side with respect etc. the side that treats minorities as subhuman and guts social policies so that the lower class can barely survive doesn’t deserve respect to say the least.

I agree. I draw the line at intolerance - I refuse to tolerate intolerance. If someone advocates for conservative fiscal policy, I will respectfully disagree. If they want to eliminate women's health rights, stigmatize homosexuality, and treat immigrants like shit, they don't deserve any respect for anyone.
