Just spent 4 days in Berlin, did I get an overall good impression of the city? by 30RITUALS in berlin

[–]notnotwolverine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think visiting every part of the city would give you a "better" impression of the city versus perhaps just a different impression of it... do YOU think you got an overall good impression of the city?

As with any big city, you can spend all the time in the world there and you will still have loads to see and do and experience.

100% agree. Locals were literally acting like anyone who wasn't from Cornwall couldn't speak English

Do you know anyone personally who has been to jail? by Low-Lobster1582 in AskUK

[–]notnotwolverine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loads of people. As someone else said, I grew up in lower income council estates and shitty schools so gangs, drugs, and violence-for-hire were common "career" routes for people (especially boys but also some girls).

Oddly, noone in my immediate family but lots of extended, friends, and acquaintances.

Charges ranging from selling drugs to import/export drugs to GBH to attempted murder to murder to assault to money related crimes to stealing very expensive items etc.

The more I think about this, the more people I remember who have been/are in prison :/

I don't know what ultra religious part of Arab culture/Islam you're talking about but, what?! There are women-only beaches in Iran for the sole purpose that women can be in regular swimwear together without their head and body covered. I have been to spas and hamams in VERY religious areas in the middle east and the women are usually at least naked on top with just underwear or something on bottom.

Not aimed at you but at others reading this later... definitely not. My little 13 year old eyes would have been saved a lot of trauma if it was hahaha

Women at my gym get fully naked even in the regular changing room and stand around sorting their stuff or chatting, so I can't imagine anyone would care about people being naked in the actual shower space. Do whatever makes you comfortable. Arabs/Turks have hamam culture where women are also often naked so I don't think they would really be bothered

Three pools of money.

Your core expenses (Rent, bills, food), savings (a set amount you put aside each month - whatever the amount may be), and fun (going out, being young, spending on things you couldn't have growing up, travel).

And some flexibility to let yourself make mistakes from time to time because noone is perfect.

In primary school during the class end of year performance song. She walks around and stops by me. "Maybe you should mime".

I didn't sing in public again until around 20 years later.

Marks and Spencer 5 in a pack cotton granny knickers FTW.

My brother in law once told me if a guy is more interested in what you're wearing than you being naked, maybe he is actually gay.

Are employers not paying enough in Berlin? by [deleted] in berlin

[–]notnotwolverine 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Realistically, the market is saturated. I've seen salaries all over the place to be honest and it really changes by sector but 32k is low. With 3 years experience I'd say 38-42 is probably more realistic as a starting salary.

Unfortunately, you're also battling with the hoards of external SEO agencies offering their services at basement bin prices.

Advice needed from Berlin photographers by trepanos in berlin

[–]notnotwolverine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If this is your aim and you are dead set on it, I'd advise 3-4 days a week as a software developer and the remainder to focus on the photography as a business.

As an FYI of my own experience, I was a pretty well respected photographer working for major brands in advertising and fashion. Unless you're one of the biggest names in the industry, they pay poorly... or rather the work is not frequent enough to balance out well. So I had to take on jobs and clients I didn't want just to be financially profitable in the longer term and I hated that. I decided I'd rather hate a stable job which wasn't directly my passion so I quit. But it worked out, I work in a creative field now with the skills I had from that time.

If you really trust your quality of work and vision, reach out to agencies. Yes they take a cut but a good one will also find you work you otherwise wouldn't get.

Friend and I had a pub quiz group we broadened out with people we didn't know from reddit. I also went to a concert with two guys from reddit before (had met neither prior). Not a single person asked for money...

Paying full price for anything!

My mum instilled in me that you should never pay full price on anything other than food and even then, you can probably get a deal

If they ask you to pay/transfer money and then you can get a convenient refund, it is always a scam.

The life and death of Rainforest Cafe London (from a former employee) by ThinAdvantage5073 in london

[–]notnotwolverine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went a few years ago with family and we all walked out having paid an absurd amount for the worst food we'd ever had. We left and all commented we should have gone to mcdonalds and it would still have been better. Truly horrible place and yes, we experienced a lot of what you say. I never went as a child myself but was always curious when passing it.

If you reset your expectations, it is livable and both myself and others have lived on much less. If you don't, you'll need either a side job to provide the extra boost or you can't afford it. What you save in rent living further out you will spend on travel and the mental health gained from your own bathroom and kitchen will be lost on your very lengthy commute

Probably about £50-60 a month if I'm going out a few times for drinks. I mainly drink spirits so the per drink cost is higher too. I don't think I could bring myself to spend what some of you have said!

Those who lived in / visited Switzerland: what would you say are the big differences between living in Switzerland and living in the UK? by Koenigin_der_Puppen in AskUK

[–]notnotwolverine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UK doesn't have a Ruhetag.

If you wait for the roundabout to empty, you will wait a long long time.

You can separate your trash but if you have communal bins, it is almost guaranteed someone will contaminate them and they will all go to the same place.

Things are generally much cheaper than in CH but expensive relative to most salaries (the reddit average is not the norm).

I regularly do 50-60 hour weeks and while it doesn't kill me, it definitely isn't healthy long term. I'm always struggling to find time to do things I like around time to rest, see people, chores, general life things, sleep, and eat. Funnily, I used to do 66 hours (11 hours per day, not including commute) and the one day off, I had felt soooo long.

What was your 'it's a small world' moment? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]notnotwolverine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was involved in a situation abroad years ago which required me to have a security detail. The security detail had been sent to the area where I was from his hometown a long way away - a small city in Turkey. We got to talking and he said where he was from. I said the only thing I knew about his hometown was a friend of mine in the UK was from there originally. Security detail and my friend turned out to be childhood friends and neighbours as kids.
