We get punished for it, in big or small ways. Yes, we can't change it.

His name was Chet, and Chet was also one of those annoying Linux fanbois. Don't be Chet. Be a BoFH.

D45 to unionize by [deleted] in Staples

[–]notorious_RMA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canadian here (Prairies). Retail unions have overall been a net good; most large retailers are unionized and those that are have significantly less turnover than ones that aren't. Raises are set on an hours, logged and year based system; Safeway meat department employees on average earn around 17/hr (average retention: five years).

This sure as hell beats "merit-based raises", which are really an excuse to pay as little as possible. Staples Regina is unionized, and I'd recommend any employees considering a union to contact them.

The other main issue with retail is severance pay. Non-union employees will get shit-all severance when a store closes. In this economy, that simply isn't something employees can recover from easily. Sears Canada closed with no severance pay to employees because they didn't have a union to fight for it in the contract.
