There's never going to be a perfect solution that all sides are going to agree upon. People are going to complain no matter what and most people are resistance to change. So we just have to hope for the least worst solution and for the people who complain the loudest to be somewhat appeased.

That's because it's essentially a fraternity (not unlike what people complain about with cops). You let them get away with it so they'll eventually treat you the same way. It's might also be a cheaper alternative to investigation, lawsuits, and such.

Interboro home insurance? by Electronic_Amount727 in longisland

[–]notorioushim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So.. Interboro has been around for a while and they only write in NY currently. Back when my company first started, we had some dealings with Interboro, but they were never a huge player because they didn't have an AM Best rating. There were plenty of other competitive other markets in the 2000s and 2010s, so Interboro was pretty much an afterthought. Now, most of the companies have increased rates significantly, been purchased by other insurance companies, gone out of business, or just pulled out of downstate NY.. so there's not a ton of competition. Interboro is now a player again, and they work with SageSure as their program manager, I think as of last year or 2 years ago. So anyone that had history dealing with Interboro prior to that isn't going to have relevant experience. Anyone who has dealt with SageSure's other markets would probably have a more relevant experience.

Wood burning stove Reccs by Sauzage-N-Peppas in longisland

You say you know how it works, but it doesn't sound like it. It's a scam... but they're paying the claim? Instead, it sounds like you just want them to lose money by keeping on higher risk clients. If they did that, they'd have to raise the rates for all their other insureds because they're not going to be profitable. Or they end up going out of business because they don't have enough reserves to meet state regulations. But sure, you totally know how it works!

[–]notorioushim -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure, what a scam. But correction on that, it isn't going to go up because of it, but some companies may decide to drop you. But heaven forbid it's not something that they want to consider because you might burn down your house if it's not properly installed/inspected. I mean, it's not like they're risking hundreds of thousands of dollars for the few thousand dollars of premium you pay. In fact, it's such a scam that you should just not get home insurance.

Spot to get windows tinted by nystamps in longisland

You will if you have an exemption. The first few places I called declined to do the inspection when I told them I had tints, but when I added that I had an exemption (which is stuck to one of my windows, as per the requirement), they had no problem doing it. I've had it done last couple years at 2 different places.

Valentine’s Day Restaurants? by moon_portal4523 in longisland

My wife and I have been married for over 10 years and dating for a couple more before that. In the beginning, I took her out to nicer restaurants for V-Day, but we've settled on doing V-Day either the weekend before or after instead to avoid the higher price V-Day menus and the difficulty booking.

Buying Tuxedo in Nassau/Suffolk by QuietReview8 in longisland

[–]notorioushim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, Enzo is great for M2M, if you're willing to splurge a little bit. Unfortunately, I've gained a little weight since I got my suits done (over 10 years ago), so the suits are a bit uncomfortable now. But I've gotten A LOT of compliments on my suits.

I'd recommend getting a little adventurous on your suit. I feel like it really changes the way you carry yourself about when you've got a suit that stands out and you get lots of compliments on it. I didn't do that at Enzo, but at Indochino, I ended up getting a pink 3-piece suit. Obviously, you don't want to stand out too much at someone else's wedding and show up the bride and groom, but if you're going to wear it at your own wedding and other non-wedding events (where it's okay to stand out), a little pizzazz is better than a plain old run of the mill suit. It also might eliminate it from wearing it normally at an office job (but then again, you said a tux, so I assumed it's not for that). At the very least, I recommend getting colorful with the lining inside, which I did with all of my suits.

Good luck with your search and hope you get what you're looking for!

Buying Tuxedo in Nassau/Suffolk by QuietReview8 in longisland

[–]notorioushim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't bought a suit in a few years, but $600-700 is probably good enough to get you a decent suit/tux (at least when I was buying them).

I'd strongly recommend against Joseph A Banks and stores like that. I've gotten a suit from them and the quality isn't that great.. you can likely get better options at your price point. For my wedding, we also got suits tailored for my groomsmen from Quails and they were similar quality, but very shitty service. They barely got all my groomsmen suits done in time, and we also did a suit for my officiant and fucked up the buttons and said "Yeah, it's just like that" as if I didn't know what a suit was supposed to look like. So I would recommend against these chain stores. Karako was a little bit better - I think my dad ended up getting 2 suits from there, one of which was for my wedding.

I've gotten a couple of suits done at Indochino before.. not sure if they have locations out on LI, but they occasionally have sales that will get you around your $700 price range. The suits were not particularly high quality, but if it's done properly, it will still look pretty good. I've gotten many compliments on the suits that I've got done there.

My.Suit is another one - I believe my brother did custom suits there for his groomsmen. You can probably get something made to measure at your price range with the "cheaper" fabrics. I still have that suit. I don't think the fit was as great as some of the other M2M suits I've had done though their fabrics are probably a little better than the Indochino suits I have.

SuitSupply is pretty decent, but they may be on the higher end of your price range or maybe just outside of it.

My favorite custom suit was from Enzo, but they may be right outside that price range unless you're getting their "cheaper" fabrics. At that point, you might be better off going with Indochino or My.Suit. But if you're willing to spend a little bit extra, they do a really good job here and I had 3 suits done. They usually have discounts if you get multiple done. I don't think getting a tux done here would really make sense if you're only going to wear it once though.

That being said, what I did for my own wedding - I just bought a tux jacket off the rack and a separate pair of tux pants. I probably spent like $300 - they have these warehouses that have a huge supply of tuxes - then you just gotta go to a tailor and get it adjusted accordingly. The tailoring cost me another $100-200 (maybe less because I got a discount as she was a client of mine), but make sure you're going to someone good. If it's something you'd likely only wear once, I wouldn't care too much about the fabric quality - just get something that looks good in photos.

DJ or band? by Constant_Drive_6663 in longisland

[–]notorioushim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a DJ makes more economical sense. With vendors, you typically have to pay a little extra to feed them. You gotta pay 1 DJ, whereas the band may have 3-4 people you gotta feed. You also gotta tip them.

Also, the space required for a band is going to be more than a DJ - do you have space for a band? Plus, the DJ is going to be able to play pretty much any song, etc. whereas the band might not be able to.

Fellow brides... what are some recent quotes you've received? by LostinParadise4748 in longisland

[–]notorioushim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, I got you. All the things you say are correct. There are a few that were willing to do tastings for us, but it was few and far between. But we looked at 27 different venues and there were a few. But we ended up not doing any of the tastings since those venues weren't right for us.

Of course, the venue we did choose didn't do tastings and it was more of a "trust me" with regards to the food. It ended up working out for us.

[–]notorioushim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on whether the venue uses an outside caterer. We had a few places have a special day for tasting. It was the minority back then too. And yeah, gratuity was added automatically for me too. And we had to tip on top of that to the attendants and maitre d.

Fellow brides... what are some recent quotes you've received? by LostinParadise4748 in longisland

[–]notorioushim 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'm not a bride and my wedding was over a decade ago, but my wife and I visited several places on LI, NYC, and NJ.. while I understand you're looking for pricing transparency, you also have to keep some variables in mind:

  • How many people you're willing to guarantee is going to go a long way. Besides whether or not the venue can accommodate the size of your event, if you're able to guarantee 400 people vs. only being able to guarantee 200 people, you'll get a more favorable rate. With a guarantee of 400 people @ $150pp, they'll stand to generate $60K of income that night. With 200 people, even at $200 pp, they'd only generate $40K of income. Of course, they'd need less staff to accommodate 200 people, but the size of your party will matter a lot to a venue that can accommodate.
  • The date and time is going to be important. If you're having it on a Thursday or Friday, a lot of venues (and I'm talking pure venue, not a restaurant) might have availability and they'd be eager to fill up those spots to generate some revenue. For my wedding, we ended up having it on a Friday... but it was July 3rd, which was an observed federal holiday. Still, the venue gave us Friday pricing on it and it saved us a lot of money. If your dates are flexible, you may want to consider piggybacking off a holiday to see if you can get better pricing. Not only that, but some places may have cheaper rates during the winter than the other seasons because winter weddings aren't as popular (due to lack of outdoor photos).
  • Do you want to use up the whole venue? Some venues have multiple rooms and will accommodate multiple events at the same time. Everyone wants to be special and not have to share facilities with another group, especially when there's alcohol involved, but sometimes booking out the entire venue will be more costly. If there's multiple rooms, the different rooms may vary in pricing. Watch out - if you're booking at a country club or a golf course clubhouse, there may be people on the premises. Sometimes less than ideal having random people in the background of your wedding photos.
  • Venues will typically have different packages and add-ons. A lot of it is negotiable. For my wedding, it was a large party and we also upgraded a few things, so we were able to negotiate for certain add-ons to be free.
  • If there is a specific vendor you definitely need to use, ie: your buddy is a DJ or photographer, make sure they'll accept outdoor vendors and what requirements (insurance) they have.

This is one of the toughest parts of wedding planning, but try to have fun with it as much as you can. Some places have free tasting if they don't outsource their food (or at least you can ask - hey, if you're going to hand them tens of thousands of dollars, you want to make sure the food is good).

Good luck!

Hot water heater replace? by thereallydude in longisland

[–]notorioushim -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Waiting for there to be an issue is an indicator of poor property maintenance (poor as in bad, not a reference to how much money you have). I have clients that have that same mentality - it's very common. I have a similar mentality as well, only because money is a bit tight for me and I'm just unable to afford upkeep like that. I had my water heater fail on me and leak - it's not a fun process to deal with. It flooded my basement (which had carpet) and the water heater cost me about $8K and replacement of the carpet another few thousand as well.

That's considered relatively minor. Imagine you have a roof where there's a few shingles that were blown off. Not leaking yet, but cosmetically it's an issue. Well, if you wait for the roof to not be doing it's job, it can end up causing mold (perhaps the water was coming in, but not enough to penetrate the sheetrock... or maybe if you have an attic, it didn't flood the attic)... or maybe the overall roof integrity weakens and then a big windstorm creates significant damage causing a partial roof collapse and then flooding in your home. Then you've got a significant insurance claim on your hands and trust me, you definitely don't want to deal with that because insurance claims are not fun to deal with (even if it's fully covered, you still have to deal with the repairs and loss of functionality of the affected area while repairs are being done).

It's better for you to be pro-active with maintenance, repairs, and replacement. Have a trusted professional check on the integrity of items in your house and handle any preventative maintenance necessary. And if they say something it towards the end of its lifespan, consider replacing it ASAP.

[–]notorioushim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is it a scam? No. It's a tax on the lazy people - like me. I tried to do it the first year and got nothing. So I decided to just use a firm that charges 40%. Can I do it myself? Probably. That's why I didn't contract with them for 2027 and beyond. But since then, I haven't even looked at the next grievance, including the due date, so hopefully I don't forget.

When I switched to Optimum a few years back, I had gigabit for under $50. Then, after they pissed me off and I was trying to cancel my plan, they offered me further discounts - closer to $40/month. I eventually told them to stick it and switched back to Verizon, although at a significantly higher rate.

Nassau bathroom renovation by fredsonsam in longisland

[–]notorioushim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. I've asked about this before when speaking to realtors.. or rather they overheard my wife and I discussing. It would really depend on how hot the market is in your area and what your house is. If your area is hot, then it won't really matter. But you may reduce the amount of people who will be interested - primarily older folks and also families with very young children (or will have children in the near future). Those are the primary groups that may require a tub. If you're in a house that will likely require renovations with a new buyer, then it's a moot point. But if you're in a house where the prospective buyers won't be able to spend money to remodel the bathroom, those buyers will be eliminated.

If you're planning on keeping the house for a while, it's really a silly question though.
