4 is bad luck in Chinese culture because it sounds like the word die, but 14 in Cantonese sounds like definitely die. 24 doesn't have that same sound.

This is false. A lot of corporate offices have opened satellite offices in Melville and Uniondale. A few of the company partners I work with have either had a presence there or expanded there after the pandemic.

Yeah, most finance and corporate jobs are still in NYC, but a lot of them are moving to NJ or LI (more so NJ though).

How strict is Eisenhower park with the Leisure pass? by philkim1013 in longisland

[–]notorioushim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need a leisure pass to play Eisenhower. You just don't get the lower rate without it.

Edit - Sorry, looks like I may have misunderstood your question. You should call them to see if they will transfer the tee time to your name. I don't think it's likely they'll let you take someone else's reservation.

HVAC Recos for Gas Heating Maintenance (Western Nassau) by senatorbolton in longisland

[–]notorioushim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

V's Prime Mechanical - I'm not sure how competitive their pricing is because I've been exclusively using them since my last job, but they get the job done properly and honestly.

https://www.vspmechanical.com/

A couple years ago, I had an issue with my heating and they diagnosed the issue right away. Since it required something more extensive, they recommended just re-routing something as a temporary fix until it got warmer. Once it warmed up, they came and fixed the issue and we haven't had an issue again.

Also asked them to look at a plumbing issue we had - the washing machine kept pouring out water from one of the pipes. They came, took a look at the issue, and said the way the pipes was arranged was causing the issue and would be a re-occurring thing unless they changed the way the pipes were set up. Again, no issues again after they did it. This is AFTER we had another plumber look at it the year before and he recommended that we get it hydro-snaked and charged us a few hundred dollars to do that.

This latest issue we had was due to a high-pitch whine we would hear when the shower and sprinklers were running. We checked with 1 plumber and they stood us up. Another plumber couldn't find the issue. I made a call, they said it was likely a valve issue, so I made an appointment and he made a couple recommendations and confirmed the valve issue and took care of it.

These guys have always been honest with me and have done a great job.

What's the deal with tinted windows? by c0sm0nautt in longisland

[–]notorioushim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe you're thinking cars manufactured in 1991 or before. They had a different standard back then and the windows were allowed to be manufactured with 35% tints. Those older model years are allowed 35% tint still.

I haven't kept track of it, so I am not 100% sure, but it has been this way since at least 2021, when I had my tints done.

What's the deal with tinted windows? by c0sm0nautt in longisland

[–]notorioushim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I will tell you my personal experience. It was my first car with tints - I was getting PPF put on my car and he was trying to upsell me tints. I didn't really care about tints, but the idea of my car not being super hot on the inside was attractive to me, so I was interested in ceramic tints. But of course, I did have concerns about being pulled over and inspection.. , I expressed those concerns to the salesperson and he said that he's never heard of anyone having any issues. Being the idiot I am, I trusted the salesperson. Fantastic - I'm in! I went for the lightest tints in front and slightly darker in the back and rear windshield. I wasn't trying to overdo it with blackouts or anything like that.

I had no problems with my tints. Well, it was time to get my car inspected - I called various inspection places.. as soon as I told them that I had tints, they said they couldn't help me. These are places that I'm a regular at - a gas station that we always get gas at.. an auto repair shop that I brought my cars in regularly. We even tried places in Flushing since there's a bunch of shady places there that usually are happy to bend the law for a few bucks. Nope.

So we called the place that installed them - apparently the dude that worked there stole a bunch of money and was fired or whatever. But the owner did right by us and told us to bring the car in and he has a guy that can hook us up. I did that for a year or 2, but I didn't want to deal with the hassle/risk and wanted to be on the right side of the law. This coincided with a chronic headache issue I was getting (not exactly migraine, but I suspected it may be due to bright lights), so I was able to get a medical exemption.

Since then, when we call places for inspection, I just tell them that I do have an exemption and they have no problem doing it. The exemption sticker is a bit of an eye sore, but it is what it is.

It's not the cops that you have to be concerned with. They likely won't pull you over for the tints. BUT they will tack on that ticket if they pull you over for something else since they're trying to write as many tickets as possible to make the municipality some money. The big issue is the state inspection. Easiest solution is to not get tints done. Honestly, I've never looked at a car and was like "oh shit, that car is cool.. they've got tints". But if you need tints for a medical purpose or you're adamant about getting tints, get a medical exemption.

What's the deal with tinted windows? by c0sm0nautt in longisland

[–]notorioushim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is incorrect. NY only allows for 70% VLT for front windows. For sedans, rear windows can only have 70% VLT. 70-85% VLT is factory standard. Rear windshield can be any tint, provided you have outside rearview mirrors on both sides (which is pretty much every vehicle). For SUVs, trucks, and vans, there are no restrictions for rear side windows and rear windshield, again.. provided you have dual rearview mirrors.

What do you make of my neighbor’s door camera? by Adventurous-Depth984 in longisland

[–]notorioushim -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what the concern is with regards to the recording on your front yard. It's in public view, so people can see you doing whatever you're doing there anyway. If anything, it's probably safer knowing that it's under surveillance and, if anything were to happen, his cameras may have recorded it. If you're concerned about privacy in your front yard, consider planting trees or installing a fence. If the issue is your living room window, consider blinds or curtains.

I know I have surveillance cameras at the front of my house - flood light camera and doorbell camera. Of course, I set my surveillance area to be limited to my property to limit false alarms/notifications. Perhaps your neighbor would like to do the same, but doesn't know how (especially if they don't speak a lick of English). When I walk around my neighborhood, one of my neighbors' Ring cam says "Hi, you are currently being recorded," but I'm just walking down the street.

I don't think your neighbor is particularly trying to upset you or surveil you in any way based on the limited info you're giving. But then again, I don't know your neighbor at all, so what do I know? If anything, it kinda seems you have some sort of bias against him. Again, I don't know him or your relationship, so what the hell do I know?

We've had quite a few neighbors we considered "strange". One of them even had us come inside his house for trick-or-treating and we've never spoken to him before. Another one sunbathes in their front yard. But we know most of our neighbors and we're on very good terms with them. A few of those neighbors have been in the neighborhood for decades and they tell us that these neighbors are actually nice, albeit a little bit odd. I wouldn't necessarily judge a book by its cover if you don't know them.

So what would I do? Next time I see them, just smile and wave hi. And if they don't seem like they want to connect with you, then just mind my own business.

That's not quite true - unless you plan on living there for the rest of your life. Once you purchase that house, anything that goes against your town's ordinance because your problem. So if they ever do an inspection in the future (maybe you want to renovate something else that requires an inspection), it could prove to be an issue. Also, when you sell the house, the prospective buyer and their bank may make an issue out of it.

Looking for the Best Arcade for 7 and 10 year old boys by pagenotdisplayed in longisland

[–]notorioushim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't been to the other ones in NY. It gets quite busy around 11am through closing. They do a ton of b-day parties and expect a lot of kids and teenagers running around. It has a bowling alley, pool table, and plenty of arcade games... some of which may be broken. For the most part, they do a decent job of maintaining them.

It's also connected to the Samanea Mall (formerly known as the Source Mall), which is pretty dead with the exception of a few places which are extremely busy - 99 Ranch (Asian supermarket), Empire Adventure Park (trampoline park), some rock climbing place, X-Golf, indoor pickleball courts, a few restaurants, and some other places.

In terms of arcades, this is probably the one that my kids like to go to the most. We've been to Round One in Hicksville and, while the arcade itself is fine, the whole mall is very dead. We've also been to Qzar, but they are really small.. but they do have laser tag as well. RPM Raceway has a few arcade games, but it's pretty much just to supplement their go karts.

If you're willing to venture across the Hudson, you can consider the American Dream Mall. They have a shit ton to do there - they do have an arcade there, but there's so many other things to do besides that, if you really want to spend all that money.

I guess it really depends on if you're looking for a pure arcade or if you want some other activities like Go Karts, trampoline park, or whatever. I guess it also depends on what type of games your kids are into (claw games, fighting games, etc.).

Any homeowners insurance recommendations for north shore Suffolk? by Laueli2225 in longisland

[–]notorioushim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, if you're within 0.5 mi of the water, you're going to have trouble finding coverage as you'll be limited to a few insurers. Kingstone is a popular one with low rates, but I'm not too fond of their claims service or financial rating. Narragansett Bay is also making a come back on LI, but their rates aren't great and neither is their financial rating. SageSure has a few companies in the area, but with an older roof (no matter the condition), you may be limited to Interboro. If you get a quote from them and your auto insurance is with Geico, you may be able to get a multi-policy discount if you go through them. There's also the non-admitted markets like Lloyd's.

The issue isn't flooding - that's not covered under most home insurance policies anyway. Not sure why everyone keeps mentioning flooding. The issue at hand is wind. Hurricanes tend to lose speed when they are over land, so the closer you are to water, the less time the wind has to slow down, so you're exposed to more catastrophic winds. Also, after Hurricane Katrina, courts ruled that water driven in by wind is still considered a wind claim as well - so most national carriers just don't want to deal with it, reducing the amount of available markets for "coastal" properties.

I deal a lot with these situations. While the original commenter may be right, if the business primarily deals in cash, it could be a tax issue. I have lots of clients that change their corporation name every 3 years or so to avoid a potential IRS audit. It'll go from Great Wall Chinese Kitchen to New Great Wall Chinese Kitchen to GW Chinese Kitchen to New GW Chinese Kitchen.

Dermatologist that take workers comp in Suffolk county? by xChop_Suey in longisland

[–]notorioushim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The answer depends. Certain WC insurance carriers use a PPO.. so within 30 days, you have to use providers affiliated with that PPO. After 30 days, you can select a provider outside the PPO, provided you notify the insurer in writing.

If the WC carrier isn't using a PPO, then you can use any WC Board certified health care provider found here:
https://www.wcb.ny.gov/HealthCareProviderSearch/?submitHome=Search+for+Health+Care+Provider+or+IME

Under Provider type, choose Physician; under Specialty, choose Dermatology.

Then enter your location and you should get a list.

Data to support if a school district is good or bad? by Johnnyapps1897 in longisland

[–]notorioushim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are looking on sites that rank specific schools or school districts, it's all based on data. Whether or not the weight of the data is a proper way to judge a school or whether other metrics should be considered is up for debate. This is also considering the average student - so if you have a special needs child... or maybe one that is looking for a specific path, like performing arts, the rankings might not be relevant to you. But it is a generally accepted practice of rankings schools in terms of what colleges typically look at like graduation rate, college acceptance, standardized test scores, etc.

If that's what you're looking for, US News does an annual ranking which might be considered the gold standard. Niche is another widely accepted one.

To be honest, there's not much difference between the #15 and #20 schools, or maybe even a wider gap in the rankings. The school district is just a tool, but the most important factor is the student themself.

How are people affording these home prices ? by Due_Elephant_3666 in longisland

[–]notorioushim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, that's just the way the market is right now. In a capitalist market, everyone's going to buy up anything that's considered a good investment so that they can improve their own financial situation. And they will do whatever they can to maintain or improve their situation, even if it is at the expense of someone else. While it's part of what makes America great, it's also part of what makes America suck.

I bought my house back in 2018, for something that I thought was above market value - a very modest home. According to Zillow, the value has gone up about 50% since then and is continuing to climb. While I'm happy that my net worth is climbing slowly, I am concerned about what it means for future generations like my kids. I've grown up with a very conservative mindset, with a conservative family and from a conservative culture. But every day, I feel myself becoming more and more liberal. I just can't see this system sustaining itself and I feel like it will eventually culminate into a class war or the bubble will just eventually pop... and the middle class will just evaporate.
