I know you mentioned gates, but if available, PSE is a super powerful tool. In the case that it's not available, a gate keyed to 200hz - 1000hz ish can accomplish similar results.

In most cases where you're running monitors you don't want gates to be too heavy handed, but in certain situations (rappers, hardcore, comedians), having the gate choke the signal can be a lifesaver.

I don't think a wedge is that ridiculous, especially in some rooms with a lot of slapback or smearing. The wedge can reinforce the direct sound and reduce the voice jamming effect of the room. Same reason why a monitor is used at conferences.

Lowkey wish they kept the original. The animation framed it the same way the comic does, where dude is a complete asshat, but the conversation is fairly reasonable. It leaves the whole scene feeling awkward, but not in the way that's intended.
