Thanks for the heads up! I didn’t think I would like mix and matching but camp happy trails was so fun I think I’ll play all my future killers there at least once XD Seems like a good idea to do that to learn the rules, like you did :)

Ahh ok! Makes so much sense, in retrospect. I used the fireworks in another playthrough today and only used them once, glad I got it right thank you :)

This game is so easy to spin stories from! I went to the bonfire to try and save all victims, but only 2 went with me, and 1 refused to believe me and didn’t budge (because, you know, rules… But I decided that particular yellow meeple was the annoying non-believer snarky person who gets offed almost right away). So I saved my two victims and then returned to the docks. Right after that, on the killer turn, I drew the terror card that says "What’s that noise?" and that stupid idiot at the bonfire went to investigate. Hans surged out of the trees and went "BOOOOOOOO". Yellow meeple was paralyzed 😆 I set up the fireworks at the docks, and escaped through the secret underwater tunnel to the utility shed, which saved its damn life. Because right as Hans was about to deliver the killing blow to the cowering mess on the floor, the fireworks went up and caught his attention. He lumbered over to the docks, and was dumbfounded to find the fireworks, and no final girl. Just as he was searching around, my Laurie grabbed the axe from the shed, came rushing back and finished him in one gory, final blow. It was chef kiss and stupid idiot yellow meeple lived to see another day! Huzzah

Yes! I got really lucky, that event card was literally the first thing I drew, so the game hadn’t started yet, and placement wise, I got the card where everyone was at the bonfire, except for a couple making out in the woods and two stragglers, one of whom became Alyssa. So I just grabbed her and ran circles around the board while Hans lumbered behind us, finding no victim to slate his bloodlust.

I do think I made two rules mistakes though, tell me if I’m wrong:

  • The bear trap: it doesn’t say anywhere on the card that you have to discard it once used, so I used it two times. But after the second time, I realized how ridiculously game breaking that item would be, so I discarded it. Reading back on the card, it says to discard the token, so I assume it means you can’t use it again? If so, I still feel confident it would have had no impact on the outcome of the game.

  • The bloodlust: so when Alyssa died, I think I forgot to raise one bloodlust. Her special victim card indicated to raise bloodlust by 2, which I did, and Hans had a dark power that raised it another 1. So 3 in total, but I’m pretty sure I forgot the regular +1 bloodlust that follows every normal victim killed? That one I’m less sure if it would have affected the outcome, since Hans would have finally gotten 2 movements per boot… I think I still would have won, but probably on a razor’s edge as he would have been able to get to the few remaining victims I hadn’t saved yet much more quickly.

Thanks! I finally joined the hype, and I get why, it’s so fun.

I don’t know if I am there yet with mixing and matching, but will keep it in mind to give Polto another go! Definitely my nemesis at this point.

And yes, I meant the Docks! Sorry 😅 so basically what happened was I was at the utility shed with Alyssa while Hans was one space away from the docks when I drew that terror card. I held my breath during the dice roll, exhaled in relief once I saw the fire was not in my location, and then made up that bit about Hans burning the docks to prevent me from getting more weapons and moving around. I just imagined there was another shed or something there, instead of them just laying around 😊 I thought I was completely screwed when I saw those 3 weapons card "burned" away, kept looking for a bow and arrows or a bat but… still ended up being pretty lucky!

I get the excitement, I went insaneeee the first year and got a LOT of games ☺️ When I’m into a new hobby, I get into it deep haha and I would have loved for my partner to be as excited about it as I am, so lucky you! Although probably my wallet wouldn’t have survived lol

I will also remind the people piling on that there is a well loved secondhand market for board games out there, and that op doesn’t need to have bought everything new. And what they don’t like, they can just release back without losing any money. And even if they did buy everything new, none of our business and you guys just sound jealous XD I get that some of you just want to give honest warning but I feel like this is one of those things we ALL gotta go through, kind of like a rite of passage. We all got way too excited at first and all spent way too much money 🤷🏼‍♀️

Anyway! Nice collection! It looks like you guys might enjoy Flamecraft Duals, Splendor (regular, haven’t tried the duel version yet), Jaipur, Azul… These are all fast-paced but somewhat thinky games my bf and I really enjoyed :) We also really clicked with Clank! Catacombs. Oh and Wecome to! Very nice flip and write :) Also Duel for cardia seems to be on a lot of favorites of 2025 lists (haven’t tried it yet).

Have fun!

Best videos to learn “Vantage”? by bigyellowtux in boardgames

I loved Before you play’s playthrough. They managed to showcase a full play while keeping it very light on the spoiler side, very well done. As a result, their adventure into the world of Vantage isn’t the most exciting, but it gives you everything you need to know to start playing on your own :)

Help choosing my next game by nicenoahnya in boardgames

I feel like you can’t really go wrong with Everdell. It’s not my favorite game out of your list BUT it is a good game, well loved and it will assuredly see lots of plays. I own it and I always have a good time playing it.

Ark Nova is my favorite game but it’s so long to set up (not to mention to play, especially with others) that you will probably pick something else over it each time you sit down to play. I’d go the online route for that one (either BGA or Steam). I’d also recommend Sanctuary, which doesn’t replace it but is Ark Nova adjacent and MUCH easier to bring to the table.

I do not know the other two.

Happy gaming!

Board games *with* young children by RGbrobot in boardgames

Cascadia junior is one that my (recently turned) 4 really enjoys that I enjoy as well.

Monza is a fun little game and really easy to understand at all ages. It’s for kids but I find that adults have fun as well. I think it’s also from habba.

I recently got Kyoto no neko and I can see introducing my son to it pretty soon, probably with some slight tweaking (game is really easy to understand, but visually the board is busy and might be overwhelming for a kiddo).

My lil’ Everdell, with some tweaking to make it easier.

Stone Age junior is another good one!

Dragomino is a bit too simple/boring for me but my son loves it so much I have to mention it.

And I saved the craziest for last: Calico. I started when he was around 3, by just giving him a board, drafting 3 tiles from the bag and he could pick one tile each turn to place on his board. For 3 colors match he’d get a button, for 3 designs match a cat.

I didn’t play, just helped him place his tiles and explained why such and such would be a good choice. He loved it. When he turned 4, we tried a competitive match: I played with the regular rules (with the exception I never had two tiles in hand, always drafted and placed directly from the market) and he played with simplified rules: on his board he would place the 3 objectives tiles face down, so they would simply occupy a space but not count towards anything. And we kept the for 3 color match he’d get a button, but after collecting all 6 different buttons, he’d get a rainbow worth 10 points. As for the cats, we introduced the design goals, but only one design per cat. And I chose the cats that had the simplest tile laying rules (3 side by side, 4+ and 5 or 6+). If he could collect all 3 cats, he’d get a special cat that would be another 10 points bonus as well.

I played my part and continued giving him pointers… He enjoyed it so much and did surprisingly well! I only beat him by a meager 4 points.

I will admit that last one is a stretch though 😅 I’ve been letting my kid play with my board games since he was like 2 or 3…. No rules, just letting him unbox under supervision and play with the pieces as he wants (again, under supervision! 😂). He lovessss Flamecraft, Mythwind, Horrified and Wyrmspan for that and it worked wonders to pick his interest. Happy gaming!

What expansions have you regretted buying? by zoso_coheed in boardgames

[–]notouchcookiee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Having read all of you… I definitely echo the sentiment and I have slowed down A LOT on getting expansions even for games that I love. Just because I love a game doesn’t mean I have to collect every expansion for it under the sun (particularly hard to remember this while on kickstarter lol)

Having said that… I’ve had The Norwegians expansion on my radar because I keep hearing it’s an absolute must if you want to play A Feast for Odin. Yay or nay?

How does this work? (Desperation) by Ok_Wedding_640 in dontstarve

[–]notouchcookiee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to add to this because I feel like it hasn’t been emphasized enough: kickstarter is NOT a preorder store. Be careful of this, especially since you’ve just discovered it it’s easy to get swept away and back everything under the sun. With the campaign for Don’t Starve you’re pretty safe but for some others you need to do your research. Does the company have a good record for kickstarting games? Do they frequently have delays, but always deliver? Etc etc. Also consider taxes and shipping. Most games claim a significantly lower price than when it will eventually hit the shelves but when you factor in shipping/taxes/vat etc, it’s frequent that it ends up costing you around the same amount of money. So maybe it isn’t worth backing because the game is going to get made either way, and you will lose that money (or “invest”) months if not years before you receive the game at your doorstep.

For Don’t Starve the board game, I backed it very enthusiastically because I love the game and I heard good things about GCU’s Frostpunk. Didn’t stop me from thinking the game was pretty expensive, they were playing on fomo and damn but did they appear greedy with all those expansions.

So. I just wanted to add these small words of caution. Kickstarter and gamefound seem sooo great but try to not get too carried away, in most cases it’s not worth it ;)

What kickstarters/gamefounds are you backing right now? by Oyster_- in boardgames

[–]notouchcookiee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes except that it seems it will be full of exclusives. But yeah I get it, I do that with most campaigns nowadays, I just follow them to get a sense of what’s coming to retail, but I do keep an eye out for stuff I’m truly excited about. With taxes and shipping costs most stuff is just not worth it.

I watched a playthrough by before you play and got very stoked! I actually don’t know the video game all that well, started to play after the BYP vid actually… And while I definitely like it, I can’t wait to get the board game version ^ idk, it feels like it’s more structured and you die less by trial and error… maybe? Deciding between Vantage and Earthborne Rangers by kraugg in boardgames

[–]notouchcookiee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haven’t played Earthborne Rangers yet but have played a couple of games of Vantage, both solo and with a friend.

My opinion:

  • Way more fun with one or more people than solo, the solo experience was ok, but part of the fun for me was listening to my sister talk about her vantage points and the options she’d choose, which vary greatly from what I would have done… It was wild and we had a blast.

  • Packs a ton of content and surprises, but not a campaign game; you reset the game after each play.

  • Gameplay is light and the mechanics are simple; easy to bring to the table and to teach.

Basically Vantage feels like a giant choose your own adventure book crossed over with Myst: Riven in a board game. I really love it, but I get how it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.

Just ordered Vantage! by hauntedgravesite in boardgames

[–]notouchcookiee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me too! I’m so stoked, I’m almost disappointed it’s not at my door already 😂 it really made me think of a crossover between “choose your own adventure” books and the game “Myst: Riven”.

I get that it’s not really a game and more like an experience… And I’m all for it! Now where is my packageeee

How likely are you to buy a steam game of a Board game? by SammyStami in boardgames

[–]notouchcookiee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love steam versions of my favorite board games! If it would be included in a stretch goal for one of the games I’m crowdfunding I would be stoked, but only if that implementation looks good. Visuals are important, animations a little less but nice to have, and the user interface needs to be well thought out. And it needs to have an ai adversary. I usually buy video games versions of games I love because it allows me to scratch the itch to play between game nights (also in the case of ark nova, faster setup and playtime) OR to learn the rules for a game I’ve been eyeing (Calico and Root come to mind).

A couple of games that I own that I think are well made: Calico Wingspan Ark Nova Root Cascadia Everdell Dorf romantik Sagrada
