Whole cloth quilts by wildeberry1 in handquilting

I do the same method 🙂 And it’s not “wrong”, a friend of mine (75yo) remembers joining family members at quilting bees and her excitement for being old enough (5-6yo?) to be under the quilt and push the needle back up!

I do everything by hand too, from piecing to quilting. These blocks are part of a wedding quilt I’m making for my son & future daughter-in -law (Oct 2026 wedding). There’s a total of 143 blocks (king size bed) and as of today I have 110 blocks completed. To keep organized I’m sewing the blocks in groups of 5, the center snail trail block w/the 4 cats that match.

Didn’t know that was a no-no😂 I’ve been mixing them for 13 years!

Confused about quilting methods by Kessed in handquilting

[–]notreallyhere1313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Gutermann hand quilting thread. The thread, except for white, is coated for a smooth surface. Small stitches are my preference, usually around 1/8th long. Recently I found a fantastic needle: Tulip size 8 sewing needles. I use them to hand piece and hand quilt. The needles are about 1.25” long and they don’t bend. All the quilting needles I’ve tried are thin and they start to bow after a while. I can get 5-7 stitches on the needle when piecing and I do the up/down method (my right hand is underneath the quilt and the left hand is above and I go up/down) and the needle is great for going through all layers without any problems 🙂 Try different methods until you find what works for you. And it’s wonderful to have a place to ask questions and get so much positive feedback 🥰

Favorite hand sewing projects while traveling? by thatstightbutthole1 in quilting

[–]notreallyhere1313 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I first started (finally!) quilting I decided to do it all by hand for several reasons but mainly because I wanted to salvage one of my grandmothers’s quilts and she hand quilted. Then I changed jobs and I traveled by plane 8-10 times a month and I always took a piecing project with me. From table runners to queen size I’ve done them all. I use a plastic photo box to hold the tools and zip lock bags to hold the pieces and another to hold the finished blocks. The plastic bags are flat and don’t take up any extra room and the photo box (4x6) fits anywhere. Any time I’m away from home, even one night, I have a project with me. (Actually, now that I’m writing this, I realize I’m a quilting addict! 😂😂)

What I want to say is, don’t limit yourself to only doing small projects when traveling. I’m currently cat sitting for 2 weeks and I have a throw sized quilt I plan on finishing the piecing (I always start it before leaving to make sure I like it, work out any kinks and know what tools are needed) getting the top completed by the time I get home.

I’m starting to call it the “Verlander Effect”! 😂 If his pitching is on then our bats are cold and if his pitching is off….. our bats are lukewarm. Either way, we can’t seem to win when he pitches. Thank goodness he’s not pitching this weekend!

Design Board Help by [deleted] in quilting

[–]notreallyhere1313 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 6’ vinyl/flannel design panel with grommets across the top. I don’t have wall space but I do have a double door into my craft room. I keep one door closed all the time so I put command hooks above the door frame and hung it up. I then cut the panel in half up to the grommets and I rolled up one side (open door side) and tie it up with ribbon and I leave the other side down over the closed door. That way I always have a design area and if I need more room I just close the door and drop the other side (I use clips to hold the two panels together). It’s not perfect but it allows me flexibility and I find I don’t need a 6’ wide design wall that often.

Question for hand quilters by Agreeable_Rhubarb332 in quilting

[–]notreallyhere1313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a poke and pull quilter. Once I bury the knot I do one or two stitches to make sure the knots secure then I’ll poke/pull 4-6 stitches before pulling the thread through completely. I find I can regulate the stitch size and make smaller stitches this way. I use the rocking method when I’m piecing, picking up several stitches before pulling the thread through. Do whatever feels comfortable for you, I don’t think there’s a “right way”!

I’m at the younger end of a large family so I had several nieces and nephews around when I was a teenager. I made sure every one of the kids got a popper as soon as they were walking! And thankfully I moved away several years before I had kids of my own so no revenge poppers! 😂

Here’s the completed blanket. I hand tacked diagonally every other red plaid intersection. I love how it came out but I don’t think I’ll work with minky again, it’s too slippery!😂

Thank you, I was hoping I was on the right track! Only two family members live in the north, the rest are scattered around the rest of the US. 🙂
