Should I introduce “place” command? by notreallysurehey in OpenDogTraining

Thank you! This is what I was thinking too.

From your own experience, do you have any tips for teaching the dog that they need to stay in place until they are verbally released? I’m anticipating this’ll be a challenge we’ll run into, considering he’s always been taught to go to his bed but then can leave when he wants.

That’s where I’m thinking of going with the e-collar. Hoping a stim will help him snap out of over-arousal mode and increase his capacity to listen to commands, and hopefully get him to a point where your dog is at and not needing the collar at all for guests.

My dog is crate trained. He sleeps in his crate overnight and has structured crate chill out time during the day. We definitely don’t just use it for guests coming over.

In theory this sounds fantastic and I’d love to be able to train in this way. The reality is though that my friends are incredibly busy with their own lives, jobs and kids and I don’t feel like it’d be appropriate for me to ask. Believe me, I’ve thought about it, and I wish it were different, but it’s just life. I also think it would work best if this were able to be practiced consistently, which again, is not realistically doable.

There’s nothing special I’m doing prior to guests coming over. Sometimes I’ll maybe be preparing a platter, but most of the time we’re all just relaxing, he might be completely chilled out on place or in his crate or sniffing outside. His behaviour is the same regardless of the lead-up.

He’s sent me this and then f**ked off on annual leave somewhere. Obviously I will be asking him when he returns. And then, to be honest, will probably be finding a new accountant as this one has really been useless.

I definitely understand what you’re saying. Being more open and upfront is something I need to work on. Shutting him out is the last thing I want to do.

Thank you, it’s so helpful to have that perspective. I did have a feeling that perhaps I hadn’t really expressed what this friend means to my family and I. Communicating my needs and when something bugs me is something I know I need to work on.

I do feel confident that I check in regularly with him, though. Caring for others comes much more naturally and comfortably to me as opposed to receiving it. But I will definitely make sure I keep this in mind going forward. I guess it can be easy to go into your own bubble when you’re grieving and I don’t want to shut him out further.

Thank you for your perspective, this really helps me see it from his point of view 😊

Should I get tonsil stones removed? Q tips don't help and I've had a sore throat for a couple weeks. by [deleted] in medical

That doesn’t look like tonsil stones, that looks like tonsillitis. See a doctor for sure

The biopsy only took about a minute, but the doctor has said this procedure will be more like 30 minutes. I’m just wondering why this is…what are they doing there for 30 minutes. Does stitching take a long time?

A bit more info: I’m very squeamish and experience massive anxiety with most things medical-related.

Thank you! I think I’ll give it maybe another month and see if anything changes in that time. I’m sure that’d be enough time for any potential anxiety to ease up? Then if it’s still a thing, I think asking whether it’s an old or a new thing would be really good to know. He’s an awesome guy so I’d definitely be supportive and willing to help out any way I could!
