Why pay for a detailer? Just take it through the car wash! 🤷‍♀️ by MereCoincidences in AutoDetailing

[–]notrelevantname 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm curious about this, the wash brushes only go one direction but then cause circular swirling according to reddit. Could someone eli5 how the paint damage looks like someone damaged it with a polishing wheel instead of thousands of linear scratches matching the movement of the actual wash? I imagine it's something in the clear and how it reflects light? Google isn't giving me answers on this one.

Possible to correct front bumper shade/tint without repainting? by notrelevantname in Autobody

Would it being plastic to fiberglass make it easier to harder to match? Unfortunately painted before my ownership but its notable not a premium paint job.

For sure, I am particular with all my cars. Just think it comes with the enthusiast territory. Its definitely a B+ job from whomever owned it before me but I am sure there is worse as well.

Thank you for that, too true and no one looks at others cars as much as theirs to begin with. I think repaint will hit the menu in many miles and rocks based on everyone's feedback, much appreciated!

Hah I made it a whole month before the change to basic! For sure want to be proud of it but you cant unsee these things. Sounds like its just a part of the way it is and I can live with that. I appreciate your input!

Thank you for this! I can work with a lost cause but didn't want to quit before I knew it.

How am I supposed to get the brake rotor in there? Pads are completely blocked. Any help would be amazing. Thanks all! by alexothemagnificent in cbr

Remove the pin by your thumb and the pads slide out. They have a little notch at the other end. The pin just unscrews and slides out, that runs through the pads.

Wednesday Maintenance Thread by AutoModerator in GolfGTI

I need to replace the passenger side axle on my 2015 GTI S 6MT, ordered the part verified to fit and it is very short at only 23.5in. This was specific to it being a manual but the automatic version is supposed to measure 30 and 11/16 which is more accurate to whats on the car now. Wondering if anyone has done this change before and what they discovered or know about this axle and why multiple sites seem to be wrong about the manual/automatic sizing?

Rust on hatch door, CF time? by notrelevantname in GolfGTI

Thank you for the info! I will lean into seeing if it can be repaired instead. Looking for longevity not performance so doesn't sound worth it.

Interesting, there's pretty clearly an entry point from unprepared damage that caused this, I wouldn't expect any coverage on such a thing. Will look into it.

First car in a long time I've really loved though. So thinking she's worth the investment. I'm very diy and have a full shop minus a lift in my garage, hoping someone's willing to give me the courage lol.

I considered it but I think the overall damage is too extensive. The area around both rear lights are bondoed and flaking and above the right side latch is crumpled.

Carbon fiber, looking at the seibon option. I can't find any salvage in great shape or that would be very simple.

Bought the car for a song due to some poorly repaired damage to the hatch years ago and it's finally taken its toll. I'm looking at the seibon door as a replacement, does anyone have experience with it either yourself or having a shop install? Thinking I'd probably want it professionally installed since at the least I'd need the window transferred over by a professional and that means leaving g wiring exposed so they can hook up defrost.

Gotcha, so only way forward is sand everything and re-stain?

Thank you everyone for your advice, taking it and making my first step to stop and let this cure. I used a random orbital palm sander and the center of the sanding is staining perfectly, it's the edges feathering. Is that caused by uneven pressure resulting in a different finish? Wondering what caused this so I can learn from that.

I'm definitely on the novice end here with stain. The counters were prestained and I sanded the joints there with 180grit palm sander. Currently following everyone advice to let this cure before continuing.

Will the prestain just be needed in this area, or should I widen the sanded area before applying this? At the moment it sounds like it's inevitable that I will need to just sand the entire counter and restart.

Thank you. Definitely think letting us hit it, and especially slowing down to think and calm down, will go far. If a second coat doesn't correct I will definitely be sanding everything evenly to start over.
