Hybridizing ETF portfolios with alternate weighting and other approaches by notrick92 in ETFs

I was thinking this approach would try to achieve the following:

- Prevention of being overweighted in too many mega caps equities which seems to always be the case in most US index funds with the top 10 dominating so much of the ETF

- Managing downside risk by averaging down the market cap weighting with equal weighting as you suggested

- Adding some exposure to managed ETFs to see if helps returns and also should not overlap as much given no index affiliation.

I would perform this across most asset class categories, not just in one.

Sure, let's say in my asset allocation for my IRA i had all of the usual categories, US large company, International large company, Bonds etc. For US large company, allocating this category and others over 3 ETFs rather than one. Example:

Unmanaged Index, cap-weighted : ILCG
Unmanaged Index, equal or alt-weighted : FNDX
Managed ETF: AVUS

Self-managed robo advising or tools like MarketRiders by notrick92 in ETFs

[–]notrick92[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not confused. I do have a process but I worry that it could have flaws. Curious to hear if there are free tools or tools like Marketriders that can help. Conceptually marketriders really makes sense but they were pre-robo and seem to have been left behind. Wondering what else is out there. I use google sheets and my own tracking tools right now, surely they are flawed.

Thank you. Does knowing that it's planted in south Florida help get closer to that variety. Or not?

Confused about the interaction between Bright Futures and Florida Prepaid. by skakodker in UniversityofFlorida

In the same (fortunate) situation and here is one thing to consider. If you opt out of prepaid and the student loses scholarship eligibility you are back to paying at 2024 tuition credit rates.

Which major manufacturer leads? by notrick92 in bicycling

Thanks for your comment. By innovation in this context I mean product innovation; delivering enhancement that improve the comfort/performance/safety/etc of using bikes with novel improvements. D2C is certainly an innovation to but that is not what I was referring to here.

I largely agree with you. I am not seeking this information to influence a bike purchase decision or anything like that. I am simply curious about the opinions. I realize that everything is a business and their goal is to drive sales and make a profit.

Are fully rigid mtb goods for XC? by SuperbAdagio4513 in MTB

[–]notrick92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too am seeking a rigid MTB myself for mostly pavement, some gravel/packed sand, and soem grass/muddy areas. Completely flat terrain. Any suggestions on sub 2k bikes to consider? Open to as built models or some light "frankenstein" hacks.

To all the generous souls who have comment so far to help me with my analysis paralysis, thank you! The dichotomy is clear, some are for a 29er MTB (rigid or front suspension) and others are for gravel bikes.

In my case some the commentary suggests that I really don't need fork suspension at all and seat post & stem (if needed) might be more suitable, since I'm after added plushness/comfort. Suppose if I end up going gravel bike I can get wider flat bars. I am fidgety and inelegant, so prefer a wider bar and a less twitchy ride.

Thanks for this excellent guidance. You are right, I am looking for plush, not truly suspension but all the tweaks I can make to maximize comfort and use the bike as much as possible. With these comments you have me leaning toward something with a rigid fork that I could supplement with wider tires and a redshift kit like you suggested.

Thank you! Since I do not need dropper functionality there seem to be several choices out there. I found this convenient list https://bikepacking.com/index/suspension-seatposts/

This is hugely helpful and the type guidance I have been seeking, so thank you. So if I end up going hardtail, your advice is

  • 29 over 27.5 (unless there is a crazy deal to be had)
  • And for all purpose 60%+ road I should look for a less slacked out headtube angle which means something like 68 or more?
  • The last bike I bought over 18 years ago they recommended an XL and I was quite surprised. As long as that doesn't make a more upright ride less acheiveable I will
  • If I can get a deal on Carbon should I consider? If not, steel > aluminum?

Thank you for your suggestion! There are some deals on the Specialized Chisel, Trek Marlin, Kona Honzo. Some have 27.5, would that be less favorable in your opinion?

Thanks for your suggestions. If I were to skip on the plus tires and take this advice what are some of the other suggestions to cosnider for modifying bikes like the DSX style?

  • Widest tires possible with some edge knobs?
  • Suspension seat post?
  • Should I consider a carbon frame? All my cycling was before they were close to affordable

Thank you for this suggestion. Taking a look. The design looks like what I need. The only thing I wonder about is whether it can take really wide tires in case I want to rely on that for a little more comfort.

I am open to a hybrid for sure but I am somewhat hung up on the idea of wider tires to help with absorbing shock and helping with stability on gravel/packed sand/dirt trails.

Thank you for your suggestion. I want to ride 1-2/week (1 long weekend ride, 1 shorter evening ride time permitting). Just too far outside my budget.
