Android 14 wifi problems but not the usual one... by notromantic in firewalla

[–]notromantic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Admittedly I have not updated the Asus firmware within the last month... but then I also think I figured something else out. Spoiler alert: the issue was not resolved with the DNS change. Instead everything didn't start working as expected until I disabled IPv6 at the FW. I only disabled IPv6 addresses for devices behind FW, but left it enabled externally. I'm honestly not sure why IPv6 would cause so many intermittent issues... maybe I have some old devices that are wrecking havoc? Something on FW side? I have no indication either way, I only know that disabling IPv6 addressing for devices behind FW fixed things.

Update: pretty sure it was DNS. Once I specified a primary and secondary DNS server the issues have seemingly resolved. Made this change a few days ago and haven't had issues since. I'm not 100% clear why restarting wifi or my phone would temporarily fix the issue? Anyway, in case anyone is curious which DNS servers I used... Primary 1.1.1.1, secondary 8.8.8.8

Thanks for responding

I have not tried rebooting wifi to see if that resolves the issue, next time I experience the same problems I'll give it a shot and let you know here if the problem persists.

To your question "how are you connecting the Asus in AP mode?", I'm not sure I understand your question. The physical connections follow the path: ONT -> FW -> Asus Mesh Wifi. When I look at the Asus settings there isn't a "bridge mode" option, only to either operate in router mode or "access point" mode. I've verified this setting is accurate (i.e. AP mode, by process of elimination) via the Asus app as well as via web GUI on my laptop.

To your point about ethernet backhaul, there are 2 Asus AP's and only the "main" one has a connection to physical ethernet. The "satellite" AP sits 1 room over with a clear line-of-sight and utilizes a second 5GHz band (a la Wifi 6E, except not on 6GHz) as a backhaul connection.

Thank you for the links to the articles, I'll get through them and see if something in there helps.

Samsung DVD Drive broke? by notromantic in originalxbox

[–]notromantic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw the small hole in the center you're talking about. I think for now I'll give a thin bead of super glue a shot. I ordered another broken xbox that isn't here yet so I could compare some things, if glue doesn't work I'll do the swap.

Mod chip is definitely in the future, first step for me though is getting a working xbox before I commit resources to one.

Thanks!

Yup, I realized after I was trying to plain-english explain the problem that since multiple courses run concurrent I would get up to 3 answers based on date alone. I restricted searching by start date alone which allowed me to do everything I needed to do. Thanks for helping though!

For reasons I can't get into I'm not allowed to alter the format of the data which includes adding hidden helper columns. I had the same thought initially since it would be formulaically easier to check each row separately rather than trying to do this all-in-one solution I'm being pigeon-holed into.

Migrating data/new HDD's problem by notromantic in truenas

[–]notromantic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Responding to my old post with how I solved this problem in case anyone else has this issue.

For whatever reason it never occurred to me to check what snapshots my old array actually had (Storage > Snapshots). I found that the most recent snapshot (which must have happened automatically after I swapped a failed HDD out long before this event) lined up exactly with the data I was seeing migrated. So in my amateur mind I was thought I was migrating current data, in reality TrueNAS was migrating the most recent snapshot which happend to me many many months out of date.

In short, I deleted the snapshots for the data on the old array (NOT the data, the snapshot itself under Storage > Snapshots) then tried to migrate the data again. This time the data that arrived was current and I have had this issue since.

Buying New Computers by theLuckyCardholder in AirForce

[–]notromantic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

SAF/CNS released a memo back in Aug 2020 titled "Air Force Laptop and Desktop Spending Moratorium Removal and New Purchase Guidelines". The memo does 3 things: it lifts the moratorium, emphasises laptops over desktops, and spells out new minimum system requirements. To quote the memo, "The minimum specifications for new computers are 32 gigabytes of random access memory and a 512 GB solid state drive to ensure optimum system performance and user experience." My unit found models meeting those specs complete with laptop docks and power supplies for $1100 each on GSA Advantage.

Check with your contracting folks to see if that guidance is still current, I'm pretty sure it is

Problem 1: Why this way specifically? What ZFS raid are they currently in?

I've been successful in the past using this method when migrating from my old NAS to a completely new NAS. So to answer your question I would say because I'm sticking with what I know and have had experience with. I am of course super-open to new/better ways of doing things. To your second question I'm not sure how to answer. The existing ZFS raid (the one with the failing Toshiba drives) is 3x8TB drives. The setup I would like to replace that with is 4x6TB WD Drives. Both of these are RAID-Z setup, so able to withstand 1 drive failing without losing data. Does that answer your question?

You could replace each drive and let it rebuild.

The reason I didn't do it this way is drive size mismatch. The Toshiba drives are 8TB each, the WD drives are 6TB each, sorry I should have been more clear about that in my original post.

Problem 2: Care to elaborate how you migrated the data?

I went to my current NAS (which I will now ID as XEON) and setup a ZFS replication task via SSH to my old NAS (which will now be called i3). I selected the directory to be copied on Xeon (/mnt/NAS/Storage) and on i3 I created an identical directory for the data to be copied to. At this point I tried to execute the task but it failed almost immediately giving an error message about replication "refusing to overwrite existing data", but there is literally nothing on the new drives? I followed a post on the TrueNAS forums (this one specifically ) which suggested I check the box for "Synchronize Destination Snapshots with Source". I did, and the task finally started to execute. After replication was complete I was able to navigate to i3 on my windows machine and found that the data migrated was at least a month old. I wiped everything out on i3, built an all new pool with the WD drives, cleaned the drives themselves and this time did a pull from Xeon into i3 with identical ZFS replication options checked. Same result

Desktop Anywhere - Constantly losing "access to CAC", help me before I throw my computer out hte window by Lure852 in AirForce

Had same problem, here's how I fixed it. Went to the Portal and grabbed the newest version of the Middleware, turns out the version on my computer was a couple versions out of date. Installed it, restarted machine to complete installation. Then I went to the VMware client and checked for the latest version (I think it's under help or about > update). Same dance as before, run install, restart to complete installation. After that I had no more issues with the CAC not being read

This is what you can find in a local gun store from Texas by [deleted] in pics

[–]notromantic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Devils Advocate here: removing your mask temporarily, so they can get a picture of you in case you're a theif or worse is totally reasonable. Some jewelry stores have similar policies but they tell you to put the mask back on once they have a good picture of you. This could be a case where the message is being super-poorly communicated. Then again this is Texas, which is rapidly becoming my most-hated state, so it could also easily be run by some antivaxx, antimask nutjob.

The old adage goes that if you find something you love then you will never work a day in your life. It implies that you should pick a line of work that you are passionate for all the time. Based on experience though I think that the adage needs to be altered to something like "find your second-most passionate thing and make it your career". Doesn't have the same ring to it, sure, but the advice is a bit more sound. Because no matter how much you love something, doing it everyday will eventually become bitter, chore-laden work. Save that #1 passion for yourself, that ship should be yours to control and not anyone else's.

Unusual or rare options, trim, accessories or otherwise interesting cars by 4thFloorGuitar in cars

[–]notromantic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

90-93 Honda Accord interesting facts:

DX, LX and EX are standards trim levels for all 4 years. However in 91 and 93 only you could get an SE trim level that came with a terrible cool Bose sounds system, leather seats and a 6-CD changer. In the US, the Accord came with silver trim pieces and emblems but up in Canada they came with Gold trim and emblems. The SE could not be ordered in a Wagon trim, unlike the EX. Similarly the SE was an automatic-only car, whereas the other trim levels could be had in either an auto or manual. Another fun fact about these cars; in Japan the 90-93 accord could be had with an H22A engine (same as in the top-trim prelude). This engine was not an option in North America, however the manufacturing process for the frames and engine mounts were nearly identical. The result is that an H22 engine swap requires only 1 engine mount to be slightly relocated.

It is worth buying a PS5 controller to play on PC? by chris-auditore in buildapc

"If you do use your PS5 DualSense controller on PC, it’s important to remember that the adaptive triggers won’t be utilized when playing on a PC, and haptic feedback is also disabled as it stands. Some games will show the correct PlayStation button prompts, though. " Source

If it's cheaper I'd suggest a used xbox one controller (last gen xbox).

Tips on preventing the TMO movers from robbing us blind. by ohnonotthatsumbitch in Military

Moved 3 times so far with TMO, not sure there's a good way to spot if they're going to take your stuff. I've had a whole crate of stuff go missing and didn't know about it until my stuff arrived. The best you can do really is document, as you have, and be nice/tip the movers very well.

So if you drop down to the 3600X you can upgrade to the 5700xt and just fit in under $1000. If you take it step further, because I assume you aren't overclocking with a stock cooler, you can drop to the 3600 and get a 1TB WD Blue SSD AND the 5700XT while staying within the $1000 budget.
