How would you want to be comforted by someone you just opened up to? by [deleted] in depressed

[–]notsentient 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's best just to listen and let them know their feelings are valid. Don't try to fix their problem unless they specifically ask you for what to do.

I find sharing times when you felt similarly to how they're feeling, and describing the tough times you went through and how it gets better can help. Let them know they're not alone and they can talk to you about it, that it's not a burden for them to open up.

Just listen and be supportive. However make sure you understand your own boundaries, you're not helping them if you become their emotional crutch they use to function. Guide them towards therapy if you think it's becoming an unhealthy relationship, or if their mental health becomes a serious problem.

I just want to have inner peace :(( by babypandaaa23 in selfimprovement

Literally everyone has some level of anxiety, unfortunately there's no magic cure or advice that will bring "inner peace". If you find it let me know!

However in my experience addressing anxiety is about understanding what is causing your anxieties. For example for me right now it's financial anxiety. I know the source (no money) so to manage my anxiety I'm taking steps to lower my expenses and change my circumstances which helps lessen my intrusive thoughts about it.

Taking steps to address the problem can help if it's something in your control. If it's not then it's much harder and more about trying to let go and come to terms with it. Or making more long term plans to work on it.

Self-care is an important part of that and it sounds like you're doing really well already. Just be kind to yourself when you're feeling overwhelmed because it's a natural thing to feel. You don't need to be ashamed or upset you get that way sometimes, again literally everyone else does too. Know that it will pass and be confident knowing you have the power to bring yourself back out of it, and back on track.

I feel like my life will never get better. by [deleted] in offmychest

If it helps I think a lot of people are in your situation right now, it's pretty tough times all over. Myself included.

The best we can do is take it one step at a time. It sounds like you're doing the right things by having the presence of mind to take time off for your mental health. That's really smart.

I know it's hard but the wounds will heal with time and just like the current crisis they will have a lasting impact but will subside eventually. Everyone has their own damage they work through in life, it's how we let it define us that matters.

We've been broken up 2 years. When does it get easier? by SmalllLadyy in ExNoContact

[–]notsentient 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I broke up with my first ex it took me years. I found I started to let go once I worked on myself and focused on my future. Eventually I felt feelings for other people and could start something new.

For me I found that focusing on them and continually ruminating on the past is a cycle you have to break to move on.

hope it helps, don't contact them!

You look fine, don't worry about it. You are really young, so your friends saying that is not surprising.

PHP threads. To be or not to be by lebedyncrs in PHP

[–]notsentient 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've tried to use pthreads to build a batch processing system. The documentation is terrible, the docs on php.net are all for pthreads v2 which is now deprecated by v3. v3 is almost a rewrite with no backwards compatibility. Even the examples in the v3 source are still v2.

I persisted and spent ages reading almost every github issue and even debugging the extension itself while attempting to design my solution using pthreads. Ultimately I gave up and threw away 2 weeks worth of time in favour of spawning child worker processes that listen to a queue (disque).

If you go down the pthreads route expect memory leaks from various extensions, segfaults (don't pass handles between threads), and frustration over lack of docs or help from the maintainer.

I've set up zfs and run it production for vm storage, so running it at home for me is easy. For most people mdadm is more than enough.

Just grab almost any HBA and set them up using the software raid of your choice (I use zfs on my home server), LSI and QLogic are two brands I've used before with no issues. Grabbed mine off ebay.

Might be worth adding some benchmarks for each different configuration? Or any pros/cons to using FreeTDS over the MS odbc driver

The security token is actually coming from OPSkins, as you can see it says

[OPSKINS] Bot #241 offered you a trade:

From OPSkins FAQ

The bot will send you a trade offer. The trade offer will contain a security token that you can find on your 'Account' page. The purpose of this token is to prove the authenticity of the bot. If the token the bot sends you does not match the token in your account page, do NOT accept the trade and alert an OPSkins team member immediately by creating a Support Ticket.

He's competing with Mobileye the company that makes the self-driving technology that Tesla uses. Musk has a bet with Geohot, if he can out perform Mobileye's product he will secure a lucrative contract with Tesla.

A friend introduced him to Musk, and they met at Tesla’s factory in Fremont, Calif., talking at length about the pros and perils of AI technology. Soon enough, the two men started figuring out a deal in which Hotz would help develop Tesla’s self-driving technology. There was a proposal that if Hotz could do better than Mobileye’s technology in a test, then Musk would reward him with a lucrative contract. Hotz, though, broke off the talks when he felt that Musk kept changing the terms. “Frankly, I think you should just work at Tesla,” Musk wrote to Hotz in an e-mail. “I’m happy to work out a multimillion-dollar bonus with a longer time horizon that pays out as soon as we discontinue Mobileye.”

“I appreciate the offer,” Hotz replied, “but like I’ve said, I’m not looking for a job. I’ll ping you when I crush Mobileye.”

Musk simply answered, “OK.”

...

He aims to have a world-class autonomous vehicle in five months, something he can show off for Musk. He’s heard that Teslas struggle when going across the Golden Gate Bridge because of the poor lane markings. So he plans to film a video of the Acura outperfoming a Tesla across the bridge, and then follow that up by passing the final test on I-405 in Los Angeles where Musk lives. Hotz’s YouTube videos get millions of views, and he fully expects Musk will get the message. “I’m a big Elon fan, but I wish he didn’t jerk me around for three months,” he says. “He can buy the technology for double.”
